Li Lingfei cried even harder in his arms, her voice trembling as she asked, "Answer me, why did you treat me that way in the past? Do you really not understand that I like you?"
"I'm sorry, Lingfei. Back then, I couldn't dare to understand. You were so outstanding, so beautiful; how could the son of a murderer possibly be worthy of you? How could I dare to have such thoughts about you? ... Later, I slowly realized that fate is actually in our own hands, and others cannot dictate it. As long as I persistently work hard, I believe that one day I can bring you happiness. But then that bastard Yang Qianfan messed everything up. Ultimately, all of this is my fault—my insecurity, my weakness nearly ruined us both." Wang Yuhan tightened his embrace around her, tears streaming down his face as well. "Please give me another chance to make up for the mistakes I've made in the past. Let me spend my life compensating you, okay?"
"Really? You swear that in this life, you won't date any other girls besides me?"
"I swear that in this life and the next, I will not date any girl other than you." Wang Yuhan raised his hand sincerely to vow to her.
Li Lingfei smiled faintly at him, feeling happiness melt away in his embrace.
Wang Yuhan stayed at Li Lingfei's house for a long time. They opened their hearts to each other, pouring out all the words they had kept buried deep inside for years without reservation. They let each other understand and comfort one another until dusk arrived. Only then did Wang Yuhan reluctantly leave her home.
As he stepped downstairs, he was called over by Li Dad.
"Uncle, do you need something?" Wang Yuhan asked in confusion as he turned back.
"Yes, I have something to discuss with you." Li Dad smiled warmly at him and said, "I heard everything you and Lingfei talked about in the room just now."
Wang Yuhan's face turned red with embarrassment and anxiety upon hearing this.
"Don't be afraid; I'm not your aunt. I've been touched by the feelings between you two growing up together," Li Dad said as he patted Wang Yuhan's shoulder and sighed with emotion. "You're a good kid. I'm very reassured with Lingfei being with you. From now on, treat her well and don't bully her!"
Hearing this from him, a weight lifted off Wang Yuhan's heart as he resolutely replied:
“Uncle, please rest assured that I will never disappoint you in the future.”
“Not disappointing me is not enough; the key is to not let your aunt down.” Uncle Li furrowed his brow, pausing for a moment as if deep in thought. “Not disappointing your aunt is quite a difficult task! I have lived with her for over twenty years and have never managed to satisfy her, which can only be seen as my failure.” He sighed deeply, his words carrying a weight of meaning. “But I believe in you. I believe you are stronger than I am and will surely bring happiness to Lingfei in the future.”
“Uncle, thank you for your trust.” Wang Yuhan felt a wave of emotion wash over him, his eyes welling up at Uncle Li's faith in him.
“Now that your father is gone, I am very sad. Whenever you feel like it, come over to my house to play, just like before. We can play chess and drink tea together. As for your aunt, don’t worry about her; I will talk to her and help her accept you as soon as possible.”
“Uncle, thank you.” Wang Yuhan looked at him with glistening eyes, feeling as if a warm bloom had suddenly spread across his heart. It was as though he could sense a long-lost paternal love emanating from Uncle Li's kind smile.
