On such a night, a sense of melancholy enveloped the air. Wen Sheng might not grasp the feelings within Changqing's heart, and of course, Changqing would remain unaware of the turmoil in Wen Sheng's mind. Regardless, death is always an unpleasant affair. 0

“If only I had listened to her properly yesterday, maybe she wouldn’t have died!” Changqing cried out. 0

“If she hadn’t died, perhaps you wouldn’t be saying this! How many 'ifs' exist in this world? Once a mistake is made, there’s no turning back. Can spilled water ever be gathered again?” Wen Sheng replied calmly. 0

“Do you not feel sorrow for her death?” Changqing lifted his head to ask. 0

“Your sorrow is enough for me! Can you see my sadness? I’m just a bit unhappy,” Wen Sheng said. 0

“I miss her so much!” Changqing stretched his neck toward the river’s surface. 0

“It’s too late! Have a smoke,” Wen Sheng said with a faint smile. 0

Wen Sheng pulled out a pack of cigarettes from his coat, lit one for himself, took a long drag, and then began to cough. 0

“If only Lin Lin could come back to life!” Changqing lamented. 0

“Stop thinking about the useless things. If she were alive, her father wouldn’t regret anything; he wouldn’t even realize his mistakes! People only learn to cry after paying the price for their errors,” Wen Sheng coughed as he spoke. “Qinghe remains unchanged; the beauty is gone and will never return!” 0

The wind rustled the willows along the bank, producing a soft sound, while frogs croaked in the river, just like before! Those damned frogs couldn’t possibly understand human emotions! Wen Sheng gazed at the distant swaying reeds, the night air thick with melancholy. 0

“I dreamed about her last night!” Changqing said. 0

“Oh? What happened?” Wen Sheng asked with curiosity. 0

“She hated me! The dream was terrifying!” Changqing replied. 0

“What if she wanted you to die with her? What would you do?” Wen Sheng inquired. 0

“I would do it!” Changqing clenched his teeth. 0

“Panic! I don’t even need to look to know you won’t accompany her to death!” Wen Sheng exclaimed. 0

“Why?” Changqing asked, somewhat confused. 0

“Ask yourself!” Wen Sheng sighed deeply. 0

Changqing fell silent, lowering his head as he pondered something. 0

“Shall we go back?” Wen Sheng inquired. 0

“I want to spend more time with her,” Changqing replied sadly. 0

“You love-struck fools!” Wen Sheng scoffed with a smirk. “I really envy you; it’s like living in a fairy tale! What’s there to cry about when someone dies?” His voice was slightly hoarse. 0

“You!” Changqing pointed at Wen Sheng. “Don’t you have any humanity?” 0

“I do! For the living! Just like some people who mistreat their parents while they’re alive, then weep bitterly when they’re gone—what’s the point? What were you doing when she was alive? Crying for whom now that she’s dead? Just like now, you wouldn’t even listen to her yesterday, and now that she’s gone, you’re crying for nothing! You want me to watch you be sentimental and heartbroken? Ha! Truly ridiculous!” He laughed coldly. 0

In the night, Changqing felt a chill; Wen Sheng hadn’t been like this before. 0

“I’ll walk you home! Or else, if you go back alone and Lin Lin finds you halfway, you’ll be in trouble!” Wen Sheng said, pulling Changqing along. 0

“I’m not afraid! Even if she beats me to death, I’d still be willing!” Changqing declared. 0

“Right now, your energy is weak. It would be a pity if she died feeling wronged! It’s tough; besides, you might dream of her hating you! Don’t act tough!” Wen Sheng warned. 0

Changqing didn’t know what to say and could only let Wen Sheng accompany him home. 0

The distance wasn’t far, but the corn in the fields was tall, and they walked along the paths between them. Under the moonlight, the road appeared bright and white, with a slight mist in the distance. Changqing kept glancing back repeatedly. 0

“What are you looking at?” Wen Sheng stopped and turned to look back. 0

“I always feel like someone is following us, and it seems like someone is crying!” Changqing replied. 0

“Don’t scare me!” Wen Sheng said, a hint of fear in his voice. 0

“Let’s go! Maybe I’m just overthinking it!” Changqing said cautiously as he walked. 0

After walking for a while, they discovered a river ahead, with a willow tree and a large rock. “Oh no, it seems we’ve taken a wrong turn!” Wen Sheng suddenly stopped. 0

Indeed, this was the place where Changqing and Lin Lin had once met. 0

“She really won’t let me go!” Changqing said, lost in thought. 0

“Surely not!” Wen Sheng replied, feeling a bit anxious as well. 0

They stood there, looking around; the night felt eerily quiet. The croaking of frogs was unpleasant, and even the sound of the wind seemed to send shivers down their spines! 0

“Let’s keep walking! I refuse to believe this! What are we afraid of?” Wen Sheng declared. 0

This time they walked with determination, carefully observing their surroundings until they finally arrived at the entrance of the Changqing Family estate. 0

The tall gate tower stood imposing, with large red-painted wooden doors adorned with fist-sized golden studs that gleamed in the light, and lion-head door knockers. The walls of the Changqing Family estate were about two meters high, painted red, with shards of glass embedded along the top. 0

Changqing stood in front, ready to knock on the door. 0

“Who’s there?” Wen Sheng shouted as he turned around. 0

A white shadow darted past in the moonlight, disappearing into the darkness at the corner of the Changqing Family wall. 0

Wen Sheng and Changqing walked over, finding nothing, not even a shadow. 0

Changqing returned home and took out a flashlight. The two searched the ground but found no footprints, causing Wen Sheng's hair to stand on end. 0

"What are you looking for?" Chang Ru asked, confused from behind. 0

"We..." Changqing began to explain, but Wen Sheng interrupted him. "I lost my keys! Forget it if we can't find them!" 0

"Oh! Then let's keep looking!" Chang Ru suggested. 0

"There's no need to look anymore! I have another set!" Wen Sheng replied, trying to sound casual. 0

Once they were back inside, Changqing closed the door. "You shouldn't go back tonight! Stay at my place!" 0

"Alright!" Wen Sheng agreed. 0

That night, the two of them lay awake, unable to sleep. The curtains swayed with the wind, and they constantly felt as if someone was pulling them aside to peek in. 0
