Qin Haoxuan opened his eyes to a scene that was entirely unfamiliar.
On either side of the street paved with Azure Stone Slabs, ancient buildings stood in charming disarray, their eaves adorned with red lanterns that swayed gently in the breeze.
The street was bustling with people dressed in wide-sleeved long robes, wearing traditional caps and cloth shoes, resembling a vivid tableau from ancient times.
He looked down at himself and saw that he was still wearing the work uniform from the Modern Supermarket, with a dead phone and a Supermarket Membership Card tucked into his pocket.
Taking a deep breath, he inhaled the faint scent of sandalwood mingled with the smoky aroma from street vendors nearby.
The sounds of hawkers calling out their wares mixed with the crisp clinking of coins filled the air. Qin Haoxuan stood frozen in place, his mind swirling in confusion.
He remembered just moments ago being in the supermarket, arranging shelves when suddenly dizziness struck him, and everything went black. When he opened his eyes again, he found himself here.
"Where is this?" he murmured to himself, his voice barely audible.
"Good sir, are you lost?" A gentle voice came from behind him.
Qin Haoxuan turned around to see a middle-aged man smiling at him.
The man wore a gray long robe, a cloth belt cinched at his waist, and held a folding fan decorated with plum blossoms.
"I... where am I?" Qin Haoxuan instinctively asked.
"This is Lin'an City, sir. Are you perhaps from out of town?" The man waved his fan lightly, curiosity lacing his tone.
Lin'an City? Qin Haoxuan's heart raced. He recalled learning in history class that Lin'an was the capital of the Southern Song dynasty.
Had he really traveled back to ancient times?
"You look a bit tired, sir. Why not take a break at the tea stall up ahead?" The man pointed to a small stand not far away, where the vendor was busy pouring tea for customers.
Qin Haoxuan nodded and followed the man to the tea stall, where they sat down. The vendor brought over a steaming bowl of tea, its fragrant aroma wafting through the air with a hint of sweetness.
Qin Haoxuan picked up the bowl and took a gentle sip. The warm tea slid down his throat, easing some of the unease within him.
"What line of work are you in, sir?" the man asked as he sipped his tea.
"I... I run a business," Qin Haoxuan hesitated before responding.
"Oh? What kind of business do you run?" A glimmer of interest flashed in the man's eyes.
Qin Haoxuan set down the tea bowl and glanced around at the small vendors lining the street.
The stalls were filled with various goods: cloth, ceramics, grains, and some handmade crafts.
The vendors stood or sat, some calling out to passersby while others haggled with customers.
Though the street was bustling, the commercial atmosphere felt simple and scattered.
"I want to open a... supermarket," Qin Haoxuan said softly, his tone laced with uncertainty.
"Supermarket?" The man furrowed his brow, clearly unfamiliar with the term.
"It's a larger store that offers a variety of goods. Customers can choose what they want and then pay at a single checkout," Qin Haoxuan explained.
The man nodded thoughtfully, "That sounds quite interesting. However, do you have enough silver coins, my guest?"
Qin Haoxuan patted his pocket, finding only a few copper coins and a Supermarket Membership Card. He smiled wryly, "Not at the moment, but I will find a way."
The man chuckled and pulled out a piece of broken silver from his sleeve, placing it on the table. "This silver is just a small token of goodwill for you. If your business flourishes in the future, don't forget to treat me to a cup of tea."
Qin Haoxuan was taken aback and quickly declined, "How can this be? We are complete strangers..."
"It's no trouble at all," the man waved his hand dismissively. "I see that you are an ambitious person; consider this silver an investment."
After hesitating for a moment, Qin Haoxuan ultimately accepted the silver. He stood up and bowed solemnly to the man, saying, "Thank you for your assistance. May I ask your name?"
"My surname is Chen, with the single name 'Yuan,'" the man replied, folding his fan with a slight smile. "If you need anything, you can find me at the Yuan Lai Inn in the south of the city."
Qin Haoxuan nodded and watched Chen Yuan leave. He tightened his grip on the silver in his hand, feeling an inexplicable surge of confidence.
Since he had arrived in this era, he had to find a way to survive.
Opening a supermarket might just be his best option.
