Chu Yuning lowered her head, her delicate fingers unconsciously rubbing the edge of her sleeve. She didn't know how to explain, or even if she should.
She raised her gaze, her eyes landing on Li Qingshan's face, trying to find answers in his expression.
"I just... need to sort some things out," she finally said, her voice barely above a whisper.
Li Qingshan was silent for a moment, then sighed and nodded. "Alright, if you must go, at least let me see you off. There are many wild beasts in these mountains; it's not safe for you to be alone."
Chu Yuning did not refuse. She knew she didn't need protection, but Li Qingshan's kindness brought her a sense of warmth.
The two walked side by side out of the village, following the winding mountain path. The trail was rugged, and the trees around them swayed in the wind, rustling softly.
"Where... do you come from?" Li Qingshan suddenly asked, breaking the silence.
Chu Yuning paused for a moment before shaking her head. "I don't remember."
"Don't remember?" Li Qingshan frowned. "Then what is your name?"
Chu Yuning fell silent for a moment before softly replying, "I... have no name."
Li Qingshan did not press further and simply nodded. They continued on their way, the atmosphere once again falling into silence.
Suddenly, a deep growl echoed from afar. Li Qingshan's steps faltered, and his expression turned serious.
He quickly drew his bow and arrow from behind him, alertly scanning the direction of the sound.
"It's a pack of wolves," he said quietly, tension lacing his voice.
Chu Yuning's gaze swept across the trees ahead, faintly catching sight of several pairs of glowing eyes flickering in the darkness.
She felt a surge of power stirring within her, as if responding to the threat posed by those beasts.
Taking a deep breath, she tried to suppress that power, but her fingers trembled uncontrollably.
"We need to get out of here quickly," Li Qingshan urged in a low voice, grabbing hold of Chu Yuning's wrist.
Chu Yuning did not resist and allowed him to pull her along at a hurried pace.
The howls of the wolf pack grew closer, as if they were about to pounce at any moment. Li Qingshan's breath quickened, and his steps became more hurried.
Chu Yuning could sense his tension, but she couldn't fully comprehend the emotion.
Suddenly, a wolf sprang out from the woods, lunging directly at them.
Li Qingshan swiftly drew his bow, and the arrow flew through the air, striking the wolf squarely in the throat.
The wolf let out a piercing howl, collapsing to the ground and twitching a few times before lying still.
"Run!" Li Qingshan urged, pulling Chu Yuning along as they continued to flee, but more wolves emerged from the trees, surrounding them completely.
Chu Yuning scanned her surroundings, yet she felt not a trace of fear within her.
She sensed a surge of power within her, as if it were waiting for her command.
Taking a deep breath, she waved her hand lightly. An invisible force erupted from her body, pushing back the surrounding wolves.
Li Qingshan was stunned, nearly dropping his bow to the ground.
He turned to look at Chu Yuning, his eyes filled with shock. "Who... who are you?"
She knew she could no longer hide her identity, but she also couldn't explain who she truly was.
"I... am not human," she finally said, her voice tinged with bitterness.
Li Qingshan's face paled, but he did not retreat.
He took a deep breath and said softly, "No matter who you are, you saved my life. I won't harm you."
Chu Yuning lifted her gaze to meet his eyes.
She saw no fear in them, only determination. The chill in her heart began to dissipate, replaced by a flicker of warmth.
"Thank you," she whispered, her voice barely audible.
They continued onward, the wolf pack no longer in pursuit. Yet Chu Yuning's thoughts remained restless.
The night was deep and dark as Chu Yuning stood at the end of the mountain path, gazing at the distant village.
"Miss, where are you going?" Li Qingshan's voice came from behind her.
Chu Yuning paused and turned to glance at him. Concern etched on Li Qingshan's face, his eyes filled with confusion.
She hesitated for a moment before whispering, "I... need to leave here."
"Why?" Li Qingshan stepped forward, his brow furrowed. "It's not safe in the village right now. You shouldn't be out here alone."
Chu Yuning lowered her head, her fingers gently tracing the edge of her sleeve. She didn't know how to explain, nor did she know if she should.
"I just... have some things I need to sort out," she finally said, her voice barely above a whisper.
Li Qingshan fell silent for a moment, seemingly weighing his options. He sighed and nodded. "Alright, if you must go, at least let me accompany you part of the way. There are many wild beasts in these mountains; it's not safe for you to be alone. Come to my house and rest for the night. You can leave at dawn."
Chu Yuning did not refuse. She knew she didn't need protection, but Li Qingshan's kindness brought her a sense of warmth.
The two walked side by side out of the village, following the winding mountain path.
The trail was rugged, and the trees around them swayed in the wind, rustling softly.
