Yun Zhi Yue had only fainted from the shock, and she quickly regained consciousness.
When she opened her eyes, she was startled to find Nan Jing so close to her. What was wrong with him? She lay in her hospital bed while he sat at the edge, leaning over and staring at her, his head just a couple of fists away from hers. Who wouldn't be startled to see such a large head right upon waking? Even if it were the most handsome face in the world, it wouldn't stop her from making a sarcastic remark.
"Nan Jing, are you trying to scare me to death? I survived the car accident just fine, but I might die from your fright instead. You didn’t tell my mom, did you?"
Nan Jing looked at her with an expression she had never seen before. "No, I know you don’t want them to worry. I’ll handle it."
She pushed his handsome face away. "Fine, that guy must have been driving under the influence. He should be locked up for sure. Can you check if someone is deliberately trying to take my life? Now that I'm okay, I want to be discharged."
Without saying a word, Nan Jing stepped out and called in a line of doctors. Despite having no scratches on her body, she went through an exaggerated consultation with all the doctors in the hospital before finally being discharged.
"Hey? Isn’t this your place? Aren’t you going to take me home? I have no injuries; my mom won’t notice anything."
"A concussion is no small matter. You need to stay with me for a few days for observation. I’ll tell Aunt Lan that you’re busy with work and temporarily staying at a nearby place."
Nan Jing ignored her protests and opened the door on the passenger side, unbuckling her seatbelt.
As his tall frame leaned down toward her, Yun Zhi Yue suddenly realized that something felt off about this invasive closeness with Nan Jing.
"Shi Ge, what happened while I was unconscious?"
"Haha, you've made progress! It seems you've crossed a line; Nan Jing has already realized his feelings for you have gone beyond friendship. Just keep pushing forward!"
Crossed a line? Yun Zhi Yue smirked; as the ancients said, fortune and misfortune are intertwined—how true that was! She wrapped her arms around Nan Jing's neck and feigned weakness, acting spoiled. "You have to carry me upstairs; I’m injured!"
This time, Nan Jing didn’t say anything about needing to change genders to carry her. He shot her a glance and then lifted her effortlessly with one hand around her waist.
He closed the car door with one hand while holding her up by her backside and turned to walk toward the elevator.
It was just like carrying a child; all she wanted was to be held! Feeling a bit awkward, she spoke up, "Don’t you think this is a bit inappropriate?"
"Inappropriate? Where?" Nan Jing countered.
"Your arm is touching my… well… my backside!"
As the two entered the elevator, Yun Zhi Yue suddenly found herself at a loss for words. She wanted to mention her hips but felt it was inappropriate, so she quickly changed her wording. However, this change only made things more awkward, giving off a silly vibe that she certainly did not want.
Nan Jing couldn't help but tease her, "Are you sure you have glutes? They feel as soft as cotton."
The elevator fell into an uncomfortable silence, with only the sound of the floor numbers chiming in the background, creating an inexplicable tension between them. Yun Zhi Yue tried to wriggle out of Nan Jing's embrace, and neither of them spoke, both attempting to forget about the embarrassing moment.
Once they reached the room, Yun Zhi Yue confidently walked into the guest bedroom. After a long day at the hospital, she needed a shower.
A short while later, she emerged again and headed straight into Nan Jing's room, pulling out a shirt. "Call someone to bring me some clothes, quickly," she instructed.
Nan Jing responded with an "Mm," picking up his phone to send a message. He lit a cigarette, his mind drifting back to that time when Yun Zhi Yue lay on this very sofa, looking enchanting in his shirt.
Yun Zhi Yue finished her shower quickly—within twenty minutes—and emerged with her hair down, completely unbothered by his gaze as she rummaged through the fridge for something to drink.
With a satisfying pop, she opened a bottle of sparkling water and took a big gulp. A blissful smile spread across her face. "This is so refreshing! At home, my mom never lets me drink anything cold, let alone soda."
