Yun Zhi Yue, with her humble status, had no chance of catching the emperor's eye, but as she walked, she quickly glanced around.

The emperor's gaze lingered on her form; if not for the many concubines watching him closely, he might have summoned her forward for a closer inspection.

The Emperor, clearly soft-hearted, listened intently. Luo Bai whispered from the side, "Your Majesty, your words are golden."
The Emperor's expression turned icy. "I have spoken; are you contradicting my decree, Empress?"
The Empress's face changed, and she shot a resentful glance at Luo Bai but dared not argue further. "I wouldn't dream of it," she replied hastily.
Feeling his thoughts disturbed, the Emperor stood up to leave, casting one last lingering glance at Yun Zhi Yue as he passed by.
Yun Zhi Yue's cheeks flushed as she met his gaze. The Emperor's body stiffened slightly; perhaps he was eager for the night when he could favor his concubines.
"How amusing! I can't believe it has come to this!"
Yun Zhi Yue was equally bewildered, but as the Emperor walked away, she found herself at a loss for words.
With a heavy heart, she followed the eunuch to the residence of the beauties, Qionghua Palace. Given her rank, she could only stay in a side chamber; only by rising to the rank of a favored concubine could she claim a palace of her own.
