Lin Xu returned home, Ye Feng's words still echoing in her ears. She lay on her bed, tossing and turning, his smile when he suggested studying together constantly replaying in her mind. "Together to study..." she whispered, her heart racing uncontrollably like a restless little rabbit.
Outside the window, Xu Song's "Lu Zhou Yue" floated through the air, as the music enthusiast next door practiced again. The familiar melody, which usually sounded pleasant, felt like a feather tonight, gently tickling her heartstrings. She got up and walked to the window, letting the night breeze tousle her long hair as her thoughts drifted away.
"Tomorrow is the Midterm Exam..." she took a deep breath and clenched her fists, as if making a resolution. This time, she was determined to achieve good results to prove that she was worthy of studying with Ye Feng.
She recalled her past confusion and insecurities, remembering how she had gradually emerged from those dark days. Now, Ye Feng was like a ray of light illuminating her world and providing her with the motivation to move forward. "I can't be like I was before," Lin Xu told herself. "I need to become better and more outstanding to be worthy of him."
The next morning, Lin Xu arrived at school half an hour earlier than usual. When she walked into the classroom, Ye Feng was already seated, reviewing his study materials. His profile looked particularly handsome under the morning light. Lin Xu's heart began to race again; she took a deep breath to calm herself.
"Good... good morning," Lin Xu said softly, her cheeks slightly flushed as if brushed with a hint of blush. Ye Feng glanced at her and smiled faintly. "You’re here quite early."
"Yeah, I wanted... wanted to take a look at the questions in advance," Lin Xu replied, lowering her head as her heart raced; she could even feel the heat rising in her ears. She stole a glance at Ye Feng and found him focused on his materials, seemingly unaware of her flustered state.
Lin Xu let out a quiet sigh of relief; she didn’t want Ye Feng to see her in such an awkward position. Just then, the invigilator entered the classroom and began rearranging the seating. Lin Xu nervously clutched the hem of her shirt, both excited and fearful as she waited.
She had no idea where she would be seated or if she could sit closer to Ye Feng. "According to the new seating arrangement," the teacher announced while holding the list, "Ye Feng, you will sit in the front row. Lin Xu..."
Lin Xu held her breath, her eyes fixed on the teacher's list as if it were a decree that would determine her fate. "You will sit behind Ye Feng." As soon as the teacher finished speaking, Lin Xu's heart skipped a beat. Could it be... that she would really sit behind Ye Feng?
She could hardly believe her ears; it felt like a gift from the heavens! Before she could fully process her surprise, Xu Jiaqi immediately raised her hand. "Teacher, my eyesight isn't very good. Could I switch seats with Lin Xu?"
Lin Xu's heart sank in an instant, as if a bucket of cold water had been poured over her. As expected, she was still unworthy... She knew that such good fortune would never come her way.
Xu Jiaqi was smart, beautiful, and came from a good family; she was the one who deserved Ye Feng. And what about herself? Just an ordinary girl, so plain that it was almost laughable—what right did she have to win Ye Feng's favor?
"Sit according to the assigned seats," the teacher said sternly. "Exams must be fair."
Lin Xu stole a glance at Ye Feng and found him looking at her too, a hint of a smile in his eyes. She quickly lowered her head, her face turning even redder, like a ripe apple. She didn’t understand why Ye Feng was smiling or if he was mocking her for being so self-important.
Once the exam began, Lin Xu found herself in an unexpectedly good state. Perhaps it was because she could see Ye Feng seriously answering questions in front of her; it brought her an inexplicable sense of comfort. His back was broad and upright, like a mountain, giving off a feeling of reliability.
As she watched him, warmth surged in her heart. With Ye Feng around, she felt fearless.
Suddenly, her pen fell to the ground with a loud "thud," breaking the silence of the exam room. Just as she bent down to pick it up, Ye Feng had already reached down first and handed it back to her.
"Thank you," she whispered, her voice tinged with gratitude.
"Focus on your answers," Ye Feng gently reminded her, his tone deep and warm.
In that moment, Lin Xu felt a warmth spread through her heart. It turned out that Ye Feng wasn't as aloof and unapproachable as people said. He cared for others and offered help; he just... wasn't good at expressing himself.
During the Language Arts exam, Lin Xu felt drowsy from studying late the night before. She fought to keep herself awake, but her eyelids kept drooping. After the exam ended, she realized she had forgotten to collect Ye Feng's paper.
Lin Xu turned to Ye Feng. "My paper."
"Ah! I'm sorry!" She hurriedly stood up, her face flushed bright red, like a boiled shrimp. How could she make such a silly mistake? It was so embarrassing!
Ye Feng chuckled, "Did you not sleep well last night?"
Lin Xu froze. How did he know? Could it be... had he been paying attention to her all along?
"Dark circles under your eyes." Ye Feng pointed to his own eyes. "You need to take care of yourself."
His voice was soft, yet it struck Lin Xu's heart like a heavy hammer. She never expected Ye Feng would notice her dark circles and even care about her well-being. In that moment, she felt something inside her quietly melting.
During the subsequent exams, every time before the papers were collected, Ye Feng would remind her, "Don't forget my paper."
This unspoken interaction brought Lin Xu an unprecedented joy. She cherished this feeling and the little secret shared between her and Ye Feng. It made her feel as though there was a special connection forming between them.
Until the invigilator discovered them and warned, "No whispering during the exam!"
During the Physics exam, Lin Xu encountered a difficult problem. She bit the end of her pen, furrowing her brow as her mind went blank. The more anxious she became, the harder it was to think.
She stole a glance at Ye Feng, only to find him scribbling furiously, seemingly unaware of her predicament. Lin Xu felt a pang of disappointment; how she wished Ye Feng could help her once more, just like before.
As she pondered desperately, she suddenly noticed that Ye Feng's draft paper contained his thought process for solving the problem—his handwriting was bold yet remarkably clear. Just as she was about to take a closer look, the teacher approached.
Ye Feng immediately flipped over his draft paper and continued answering questions nonchalantly.
Watching Ye Feng's back, Lin Xu suddenly understood something. He was... helping her? He knew she was struggling with the problem and had deliberately written down his thought process for her to see?
But why did he do that? Could it be... could it be that he likes her too?
Lin Xu's heart raced faster, and she dared not think any further. At that moment, she felt something quietly sprouting in her heart. It was a wonderful feeling, like the first ray of sunshine in spring—warm and bright.
Suddenly, a line of poetry came to her mind: "The grass and trees know that spring will not return for long; a hundred shades of red and purple compete in bloom." Perhaps her spring had arrived too?
After the exam, Lin Xu's hands trembled as she packed her bag. She knew this might be the last time she sat so close to Ye Feng. Would they be in the same exam room next time? Would they sit this close again? She dared not think about it, nor did she dare to ask.
"Lin Xu." Ye Feng suddenly called out to her.
"Hmm?" Lin Xu's heart skipped a beat as she nervously looked at Ye Feng, unsure of what he was about to say.
"Next exam," Ye Feng paused for a moment, "can you sit behind me again?"
Lin Xu looked up in surprise, meeting Ye Feng's clear gaze. In that instant, it felt as if she could see a sky full of stars twinkling in his eyes.
"Okay." She replied softly, a smile unconsciously spreading across her lips.
She didn’t know why Ye Feng said that, but she knew it was the answer she wanted to hear the most.
As she walked out of the classroom, Lin Xu's heart continued to pound. She finally understood that Ye Feng was like a magical wizard who could make her world feel different. Every smile he gave, every word he spoke brought her an unprecedented joy.
This feeling must be... love, right?
Standing in the corridor, Lin Xu watched Ye Feng's retreating figure and silently vowed to herself: she would work hard to become better, to be someone worthy of standing by his side.
