Lin Xu stood in the corridor, watching Ye Feng's retreating figure, a warm current surging in her heart. She took a deep breath, clenched her fists, as if she had made a firm resolution.
"I must work hard and become better," she silently vowed to herself. "Only then will I be worthy of standing by his side."
Upon returning home, Lin Xu immediately immersed herself in her studies. She opened her textbooks but found her thoughts drifting uncontrollably towards Ye Feng.
"No, I can't think about him anymore," Lin Xu shook her head, forcing herself to concentrate.
However, Ye Feng's image seemed etched in her mind, impossible to erase. His serious expression while answering questions, the gentleness he showed when picking up her pen, the smile he had when reminding her to collect her papers...
"Ah!" Lin Xu lamented as she ran her fingers through her hair. "What is wrong with me? Why can’t I stop thinking about him?"
She glanced at the exercises on her desk and suddenly had an idea.
"Right! I can make Ye Feng my goal. As long as I can catch up to his grades, I will definitely be able to stand beside him!"
This thought filled Lin Xu with excitement, and she immediately threw herself into even more intense studying.
Days passed, and Lin Xu's grades skyrocketed. From being at the bottom of her class, she leaped to the top of her grade.
Such a change astonished everyone.
"Lin Xu, you’re amazing!" Ji Jiumei exclaimed as she patted Lin Xu on the shoulder. "How did you do it?"
Lin Xu smiled, her gaze unconsciously drifting to Ye Feng at the other end of the classroom.
"I just... found my direction for effort."
He Miao scoffed derisively and said sarcastically, "Hmph, so you just got a good grade? What’s so impressive about that?"
Lin Xu ignored He Miao's mockery; her eyes remained fixed on Ye Feng.
Ye Feng seemed to sense her gaze and turned his head, offering her an approving smile.
In that moment, Lin Xu felt her heart skip a beat.
"He... he smiled! He smiled at me!" Lin Xu's heart raced with excitement.
She quickly lowered her head, pretending to read, but an involuntary sweet smile spread across her face.
"Lin Xu," the homeroom teacher approached and patted her shoulder. "Your recent progress is truly remarkable!"
Lin Xu looked up to see a proud smile on the teacher's face.
"Thank you, teacher," she said shyly. "I just... want to become better."
"Very good, keep it up," the teacher encouraged. "By the way, City Experimental Middle School has recently implemented an expansion policy for admissions; are you interested?"
Lin Xu's heart skipped a beat. City Experimental Middle School? Isn’t that the school Ye Feng has always wanted to attend?
"Can I... really?" she asked cautiously.
"Of course! With your current grades, you have every chance," the teacher replied with a smile. "However, competition will be fierce; you need to be mentally prepared."
Lin Xu nodded, determination shining in her eyes.
"I understand. I will work even harder."
After school, Lin Xu was running alone on the playground. She knew her physical education grades had always been poor, and if she wanted to get into City Experimental School, she had to overcome this hurdle.
"Ha... ha..." She gasped for breath as she ran, her clothes soaked with sweat.
Suddenly, she spotted a familiar figure. It was Ye Feng! He was standing by the track, seemingly waiting for someone.
Lin Xu's heart raced, unsure if it was from running or seeing Ye Feng.
"Should... should I go say hi?" she hesitated, her steps unconsciously slowing down.
At that moment, Ye Feng turned his head and saw her.
"Lin Xu?" He walked over, "Are you practicing long-distance running?"
Lin Xu nodded, her face flushed from the exertion.
"Um, I... I want to improve my physical education grades for Senior One."
Ye Feng smiled, "Is it to get into City Experimental School?"
Lin Xu looked at him in surprise, "How did you know?"
"Just a guess." Ye Feng shrugged, "You've made such great progress lately; you must have a goal."
Lin Xu lowered her head, unable to meet Ye Feng's gaze.
"I... I just want to study together with you..." Her voice grew softer until it was almost inaudible.
"What?" Ye Feng leaned in closer, "What did you say?"
Lin Xu took a deep breath and mustered the courage to look up.
"I want to study together with you for City Experimental School!" she almost shouted.
Ye Feng paused for a moment before smiling.
"Sure, let's work hard together."
Lin Xu felt as if her heart might leap out of her chest. She couldn't believe that Ye Feng had actually agreed!
"Really... really?" she stammered.
Ye Feng nodded, "Of course. But you'll need to improve your physical education grades. Do you want me to teach you?"
Lin Xu's eyes widened in surprise, "You would be willing to teach me?"
"Yeah, let's make it a trade." Ye Feng said, "You help me improve my Language Arts grades, and I'll help you with your physical education grades. How does that sound?"
Lin Xu felt like she might faint from happiness.
"Okay... okay!" She nodded vigorously, afraid that Ye Feng might change his mind.
And so, the two of them began their mutual study support.
Every day after school, they would practice long-distance running together. Ye Feng patiently guided Lin Xu, teaching her how to adjust her breathing and maintain the correct posture.
On weekends, Lin Xu would help Ye Feng with his Language Arts studies. She noticed that while he excelled in science, he struggled a bit with writing.
"Look, you can use a metaphor here," Lin Xu pointed at Ye Feng's essay, explaining softly.
Ye Feng listened intently, nodding occasionally.
"I see now; I understand," he said. "You're really impressive."
Lin Xu's face turned crimson. She lowered her head, pretending to read, but inside she felt a warm sweetness.
As days passed, Lin Xu's physical education grades improved significantly, and Ye Feng's Language Arts scores steadily rose as well. Their relationship grew closer.
One day, while running on the playground, Lin Xu accidentally twisted her ankle.
"Ah!" she cried out in pain and fell to the ground.
Ye Feng rushed over immediately. "What happened?"
"I'm... I'm fine; I just twisted my ankle," Lin Xu said, trying to suppress the pain as she attempted to stand up.
Ye Feng knelt down and gently held her ankle. "Don't move; let me take a look."
His hands were warm, and Lin Xu felt her heart race again.
"Fortunately, it's just a mild sprain," Ye Feng said. "I'll take you to the infirmary."
With that, he prepared to carry Lin Xu on his back.
"No... it's okay!" Lin Xu hurriedly replied. "I can walk by myself."
Ye Feng smiled lightly. "Don't be stubborn; come on."
He effortlessly lifted Lin Xu onto his back.
Her face instantly flushed like a ripe apple. She could feel Ye Feng's body heat and catch a faint scent from him.
"Ye... Ye Feng..." she whispered.
"Mm?"
"Thank you."
Ye Feng didn't respond verbally but simply gave a soft "mm." Yet Lin Xu sensed that his ears seemed to redden as well.
Just then, He Miao approached with a few girls in tow.
"Well, if it isn't our 'top student' Lin Xu," He Miao said sarcastically. "What's this? Now you need someone to carry you even when walking?"
Lin Xu felt her face grow even hotter. She wanted to get down from Ye Feng's back, but he showed no intention of letting her down.
"She sprained her ankle, so I took her to the infirmary," Ye Feng said calmly. "Is there a problem?"
He Miao was momentarily taken aback by Ye Feng's attitude, unsure of how to respond.
"Let's go," Ye Feng said to Lin Xu, then turned and left without looking back.
Lin Xu clung to Ye Feng's back, feeling both sweet and anxious inside.
"Ye Feng..." she whispered.
"Mm?"
"Aren't you... worried about what others might think?"
Ye Feng stopped and turned to look at her.
"What do you mean?"
Lin Xu lowered her head, her voice growing softer. "I mean... us..."
Ye Feng smiled. "What’s there to misunderstand? Aren't we friends?"
Lin Xu's heart sank. Friends... So in his eyes, we are just friends?
She forced a smile, trying to suppress her disappointment. "Yeah, you're right. We are friends."
Ye Feng seemed to sense the change in her mood but didn't say anything more, continuing toward the infirmary.
As Lin Xu rested against Ye Feng's back, a mix of emotions swirled within her. She knew her feelings for Ye Feng had surpassed friendship, but she was too afraid to admit it or show it. She feared that once she spoke up, she would lose the closeness they currently shared.
"Let it be," she told herself. "Just being with him, even as friends, is good enough."
What she didn't know was that Ye Feng was also struggling with his own feelings. He could feel Lin Xu's heartbeat and catch a hint of her fragrance in the air. This sensation excited yet terrified him.
"Are we really just friends?" Ye Feng asked himself silently.
But he had no answer.
Thus, they walked in silence, each harboring their own thoughts.
In the infirmary, the school nurse was bandaging Lin Xu's ankle.
"It’s nothing serious; just rest for a few days," the nurse said. "But you should avoid strenuous activities during this time."
Lin Xu nodded, but inside she felt anxious.
"But... but the Midterm Exam and Physical Examination are coming soon..." she said softly.
Ye Feng, standing nearby, furrowed his brow slightly upon hearing this.
"Don't worry," he said, "I'll help you."
Lin Xu looked up and saw the determination in Ye Feng's eyes, which immediately put her at ease.
"Okay, thank you," she replied quietly.
As they walked out of the infirmary, Ye Feng suddenly stopped in his tracks.
"Lin Xu," he said, "I have something I want to tell you."
Lin Xu's heart raced.
"What... what is it?" she asked nervously.
Ye Feng took a deep breath, as if he was gathering his resolve.
"I..."
Just then, the principal's voice echoed through the loudspeaker.
"Attention students, regarding the enrollment expansion policy at City Experimental Middle School, our school..."
Ye Feng and Lin Xu both froze in surprise.
They exchanged glances, seeing tension and anticipation reflected in each other's eyes.
"Come on, let's go listen," Ye Feng said.
Lin Xu nodded and followed Ye Feng toward the broadcasting room.
Her mind was filled with questions. What was Ye Feng about to say? Did he feel something more than just friendship for her? Or was he simply going to talk about studies?
Lin Xu didn't know the answer. But she understood that no matter what, she wanted to get into City Experimental Middle School with Ye Feng. Because only then could she continue to be with him and have a chance to show him her true self.
"Ye Feng," she said softly, "let's work hard together."
Ye Feng turned back and gave her a warm smile.
"Yeah, let's work hard together."
