Lin Xu stood at the classroom door, and the moment she pushed it open, the noise inside came to an abrupt halt. All eyes were on her, filled with surprise, curiosity, and a hint of barely concealed hostility. Lin Xu forced herself to remain calm as she quickly walked to her seat.
"Well, if it isn't our 'English prodigy'!" He Miao's sarcastic voice came from the back row. "You did pretty well yesterday, didn't you? Feeling a bit full of yourself now?"
Lin Xu ignored her and quietly took out her textbook. She could feel the whispers of her classmates around her, but she told herself not to pay attention and to focus on her goals.
"Don't mind her," Ji Jiumei, who sat beside her, whispered. "She's just jealous of you. You were amazing yesterday!"
Lin Xu managed a strained smile, but inside she was a whirlwind of emotions. She knew this was just the beginning. Choosing Liberal Arts, along with her performance yesterday, was like throwing a stone into a still lake, creating countless ripples. The class bell rang, and the homeroom teacher, Luo Yan, entered the classroom. He adjusted his glasses and scanned the room before finally resting his gaze on Lin Xu.
"Class," Luo Yan began, "I believe everyone knows that Lin Xu performed exceptionally well in English class yesterday. This proves that with hard work, anyone can become an outstanding student." A smattering of applause broke out in the classroom, and Lin Xu felt her face flush with heat. She stole a glance at Lu Ming in the front row and found him looking thoughtfully at her.
"Lin Xu," Luo Yan continued, "since you've chosen Liberal Arts, I hope you can maintain this momentum in your studies moving forward. Remember, opportunities are always reserved for those who are prepared." Lin Xu nodded but felt a twinge of anxiety. She knew that the teacher's words would undoubtedly make her a target.
After class, as Lin Xu prepared to head to the library, she was stopped by Lu Ming.
"Lin Xu," he said calmly with a hint of curiosity in his voice, "can I talk to you for a moment?" Surprised, she nodded and followed him to a corner of the hallway.
"How did you do it?" Lu Ming asked straightforwardly.
"Do what?" Lin Xu replied, puzzled.
"Improve your English so much in such a short time." A glimmer of admiration flickered in Lu Ming's eyes. "I know you've been working hard, but this rate of progress... it's truly impressive."
Lin Xu's heart tightened; she certainly couldn't tell him she was reborn. Taking a deep breath, she said, "Maybe... it's because I've found a study method that works for me."
Lu Ming nodded thoughtfully. "Looks like I need to adjust my study methods too. Lin Xu, you're really amazing."
Hearing Lu Ming's compliment warmed Lin Xu's heart. She hadn't expected someone as aloof as him would initiate a conversation with her and even praise her. "Thank you," she smiled. "You're pretty great too. We... we could study together and exchange ideas."
Lu Ming's eyes lit up. "Really? That would be fantastic! I've always thought you had great potential; I just never had the chance to talk to you properly before." Just then, He Miao approached with several girls in tow. Upon seeing Lin Xu and Lu Ming together, their expressions soured instantly.
"Oh look, our 'top student' is here!" He Miao sneered. "What's this? Even Lu Ming is trying to curry favor with you now?"
Lin Xu felt heat rise to her face; she wanted to retort but didn't know what to say.
Unexpectedly, Lu Ming spoke up: "He Miao, what do you mean by that? Lin Xu is excellent; what's wrong with me talking to her?"
He Miao was taken aback by Lu Ming's response; her face turned even darker as she huffed and walked away with the other girls.
Lin Xu glanced gratefully at Lu Ming; warmth spread through her heart. She hadn't expected him to stand up for her.
"Don't mind them," Lu Ming said softly. "Keep up your hard work. I believe you can become the best student."
Lin Xu nodded, feeling motivated. She knew the road ahead was long and fraught with challenges. But as long as she stuck to her choices and studied diligently, she would surely achieve her goals.
In the days that followed, Lin Xu studied even harder. Every night she stayed late at the library. Sometimes she'd find Lu Ming there studying too. Though they didn't speak much, their silent companionship brought Lin Xu an inexplicable sense of comfort.
Finally, midterm exams arrived. The night before the exams began, Lin Xu sat at her desk reviewing all her hard work from this period. She thought back to who she had been before—an insecure girl lacking confidence—and realized how much she had changed since then. "Lin Xu, you can do this," she told herself in front of the mirror. "This time, you're going to create a miracle."
During the two days of exams, Lin Xu immersed herself completely in each subject. With every test completed, she felt more confident than before. After finishing the last subject, she let out a long sigh of relief filled with anticipation.
On the day results were announced, excitement swept through the school like wildfire. Lin Xu’s name appeared at the top of the grade list—she couldn't believe her eyes and checked several times just to be sure.
"Lin Xu! You're amazing!" Ji Jiumei exclaimed as she hugged her tightly. "I knew you could do it!"
Before Lin Xu could fully process what had happened, classmates surrounded her congratulating her and asking for study tips. Even He Miao—who had always looked down on her—had a complex expression on her face.
Amidst the crowd, Lin Xu spotted Lu Ming standing not far away with a faint smile on his face as he nodded at her. A wave of warmth washed over Lin Xu; she understood what this quiet supporter meant to her.
After school ended, Lin Xu eagerly wanted to call her mother to share the good news. However, after ringing for quite some time without an answer, disappointment crept in briefly before she adjusted her mindset quickly. She knew that her mother might be busy and decided she'd tell her when she got home later that evening.
Stepping out of the teaching building, Lin Xu encountered Lu Ming once again. "Congratulations," Lu Ming said softly, "You did it." Lin Xu smiled and nodded, "Thank you. Actually... this is also thanks to your encouragement and companionship." A glimmer of surprise flashed in Lu Ming's eyes, and then he smiled, "No, this is all your own achievement. Lin Xu, you are truly amazing."
The two exchanged smiles, and everything was understood without words. Lin Xu felt something quietly sprouting in her heart, though she wasn't quite sure what it was. Just then, her phone suddenly rang. She took it out to see an unfamiliar number. "Hello?" she answered the call.
"Is this Lin Xu?" a strange male voice came from the other end of the line. "I am an admissions officer from Peking University..." Lin Xu froze for a moment, glancing at Lu Ming, who also wore a look of confusion.
