On the evening after the first snowfall, the sky appeared as if it had been washed clean, devoid of any impurities, while the setting sun cast a gentle golden hue over the pristine landscape.
At F County High School, the campus was blanketed in white, and the cold wind felt like tiny knives against their faces, stinging with each gust. Yet this did nothing to dampen the students' spirits; instead, it added a festive atmosphere to the chilly winter day.
Groups of students gathered in twos and threes, excitedly discussing their plans for New Year's Eve, their laughter ringing through the air like a string of wind chimes—clear and melodious.
“Hey, how should we celebrate New Year's Eve to make it interesting?” asked a girl in a red down jacket, rubbing her hands together and puffing out her breath.
“Of course we should go to the square to watch the fireworks! I heard there are so many new styles this year!” another girl with a ponytail chimed in eagerly, her eyes sparkling with anticipation.
“Pfft, watching fireworks every year is boring! It’s better to stay home and eat hot pot!” a boy wearing glasses scoffed dismissively.
“Eat hot pot? You really have no taste!” The girl in the red jacket rolled her eyes. “New Year's Eve needs some sense of ceremony!”
“Sense of ceremony? Can you eat that?” The boy adjusted his glasses, looking bewildered.
“You…” The girl in the red jacket was at a loss for words, stamping her foot in frustration.
Lin Xu stood at the corner of the hallway, listening to her classmates' chatter, but inside she felt as if a heavy stone was pressing down on her heart. She sighed softly, her gaze dimming and contrasting sharply with the lively atmosphere around her.
“Lin Xu, what’s wrong? You look so troubled,” Lu Ming asked with concern as he approached her without her noticing.
Lin Xu forced a smile. “It’s nothing, just thinking about… my essay.”
“Essay?” Lu Ming blinked in surprise. “But you’ve already written it so well! Teacher Zhu often uses your essays as examples!”
“But…” Lin Xu hesitated to speak further; she couldn’t exactly say that she had been called by Teacher Zhu to help someone else with their essay—especially not Ye Feng. Just thinking about Ye Feng made Lin Xu's heart race uncontrollably, like a startled deer pounding against her chest.
“Ding—” The class bell interrupted Lin Xu's thoughts.
Feeling as if she had been rescued, she hurriedly said, “I need to get back to class!”
She dashed back to her classroom, leaving Lu Ming standing there with a puzzled expression.
“Strange, why does Lin Xu seem off today?” Lu Ming scratched his head in confusion.
Just as Lin Xu turned to leave, she suddenly heard Teacher Zhu's voice over the intercom: “Please have Lin Xu come to the Language Arts office after school.”
Lin Xu's heart sank; could it be that they found out about her physical fitness test? She anxiously waited until school was over, dragging her heavy feet toward the Language Arts office.
As she pushed open the door, she froze in place. Inside the office sat Ye Feng on a chair, holding an essay book in his hands. Sunlight streamed through the window and illuminated him, casting a golden glow around him that made him look exceptionally radiant.
“Here you are,” Teacher Zhu said with a smile. “Lin Xu, your recent essays have been quite good. Could you help Ye Feng with some tutoring? His science grades are excellent, but he struggles a bit with Language Arts.”
Lin Xu's heart skipped a beat. Alone with Ye Feng?
She instinctively wanted to refuse but couldn’t find a reason to do so.
“Um…” Just as she was about to speak, Ye Feng interrupted, “Lin Xu, think of it as a way to repay you for helping me with math before.”
His voice was deep and magnetic, like the strings of a cello gently strumming Lin Xu’s heart, leaving her flustered.
Teacher Zhu glanced at her watch. “I have a few things to take care of, so I’ll leave you two to study. Remember to turn off the lights and lock the door.”
With that, she grabbed her bag and left, leaving only Lin Xu and Ye Feng in the office.
In the quiet air, Lin Xu could hear her own heartbeat, each thump louder than the last, as if it were trying to leap out of her chest.
Outside the window, snowflakes began to fall, dancing lightly like little fairies at play. The entire world seemed to quiet down, leaving only the soft sound of snowflakes landing—whispering softly.
“Let’s get started,” Ye Feng’s voice broke the silence, pulling Lin Xu back from her reverie.
Sitting across from Ye Feng, she forced herself to calm down. She opened his notebook and found his handwriting neat and strong, just like him—clean-cut and defined.
“Your essay structure is very clear,” Lin Xu said. “But your emotional expressions feel a bit stiff. For example, here…”
She pointed to a passage in his essay and explained softly, her voice gentle as a spring breeze brushing against Ye Feng’s heart.
Time passed slowly; outside, the snow fell heavier and heavier. Flakes drifted down like goose feathers, blanketing the world in silver white.
Lin Xu focused on her explanation; occasionally looking up, she caught sight of Ye Feng listening intently.
His long eyelashes cast shadows under the light like two small fans gently fluttering. His gaze was focused and deep, resembling a tranquil pool that drew one in.
“Is it already this late?” Ye Feng suddenly looked at his watch. “It’s almost eleven.”
Lin Xu then noticed that outside, the lights had come on and the campus was silent.
Today was New Year's Eve; faint sounds of fireworks echoed in the distance—bang bang bang—like a joyful symphony resonating in the night sky.
“Well then…” Lin Xu began packing her books when she suddenly discovered a small box in her bag.
It was a New Year’s gift she had planned for Ye Feng—a basketball keychain.
“Wait,” Ye Feng suddenly spoke up. “Would you accompany me somewhere?”
Lin Xu was taken aback. "Where to?"
"Behind the back wall," Ye Feng replied with a mysterious smile. "I've prepared something."
The two of them sneaked out of the office, crossing the deserted campus.
Under the moonlight, the snow reflected a silvery glow, like a silver ribbon stretching beneath their feet.
Their footsteps left a series of imprints in the snow, deep and shallow, like a silent poem.
Upon reaching the back wall, Ye Feng pulled out a few fireworks from his bag.
"These are illegal," Lin Xu couldn't help but say, her voice tinged with concern.
"Don't worry, I got the smallest ones," Ye Feng chuckled. "What’s New Year's Eve without some fireworks?"
He lit the fuse, and the hissing sound echoed clearly in the quiet night sky.
The fireworks burst into bloom above them, vibrant colors lighting up the darkness like blossoming flowers.
Lin Xu watched Ye Feng's profile illuminated by the fireworks, her heart racing again, pounding like a little drum—thump thump thump.
"Um..." Lin Xu took a deep breath and pulled out a gift from her bag. "Happy New Year."
She handed him the small box, her palms sweating with nervousness.
Ye Feng took the box and gently opened it.
The silver basketball keychain sparkled softly in the moonlight, resembling a tiny star resting in Ye Feng's palm.
"What does the note say?" Ye Feng asked softly, glancing at the small piece of paper tucked within the keychain.
"To win the world," Lin Xu whispered. "Haven't you always said you wanted to get into Tsinghua? I hope you can achieve your dream."
Ye Feng turned to look at her, his gaze as gentle as a spring stream, as if it could drown someone in its depths.
"You've been tutoring me since Senior One, silently supporting me all this time. Actually..."
Suddenly, distant bells began to chime—ding—ding—ding—each note resonating melodiously and profoundly, heralding the arrival of a new year.
Lin Xu gazed at the fireworks filling the sky and silently thought:
"I've actually liked you for five years now; let this secret remain in this year forever."
At that moment, a cold wind blew through, scattering the fireworks in the air.
Ye Feng turned his head slightly open-mouthed as if he wanted to say something.
