Lin Xu stood at the classroom door, taking a deep breath to steady the turmoil within her. Her hands clutched the straps of her backpack tightly, her knuckles turning white as if she could grasp something tangible by doing so.
"Calm down, Lin Xu, calm down," she repeated in her mind. "You knew this day would come, didn't you?"
As she pushed the door open, her gaze instinctively darted to Ye Feng's seat. It was empty. She let out a sigh of relief, tinged with a hint of disappointment.
"Xuxu! Why are you so late?" Ji Jiumei's voice called out.
Lin Xu forced a smile. "Oh, nothing... just overslept."
She walked toward her seat, each step feeling as if she were walking on cotton—light and unsteady. Once seated, she mechanically opened her textbook, staring at the pages without absorbing a single word.
"Ye Feng is with Xia Mo now." The thought sliced through her heart like a sharp knife, leaving painful reminders with every pulse.
"Lin Xu, are you okay?" Ji Jiumei asked with concern. "You look a bit pale."
Lin Xu lifted her head and forced a cheerful expression. "I'm fine; I just didn't sleep well last night."
At that moment, the classroom door swung open, and Ye Feng entered alongside Xia Mo. They were chatting and laughing together, their closeness making Lin Xu's heart feel as if it had been wrenched painfully.
"Good morning, everyone." Ye Feng's voice remained gentle, but his gaze inadvertently flicked over Lin Xu for a brief moment, carrying an undertone of complex emotions.
Lin Xu lowered her head, pretending to focus on her book, too afraid to meet his eyes. She felt Ye Feng's gaze linger on her for just an instant before it moved away.
"Xuxu, are you really okay?" Ji Jiumei whispered. "If you're not feeling well, I can go with you to the nurse's office."
Lin Xu shook her head. "No need; I'm really fine." She managed a strained smile. "See? I'm perfectly alright."
Ji Jiumei hesitated for a moment before gently patting her shoulder.
The bell rang for class to begin as the teacher walked in. Lin Xu forced herself to concentrate, but every time she heard Ye Feng answer a question, her heart would tremble uncontrollably.
"Why is this happening?" she questioned herself internally. "Why did it have to be Xia Mo?"
After class ended, Lin Xu hurriedly exited the room, desperate to escape the suffocating atmosphere. She made her way to a small grove behind the school and leaned against a tree, finally unable to hold back as tears streamed down her face.
"Lin Xu?" A familiar voice came from behind her.
She turned abruptly to see Ye Feng standing there, concern etched on his face.
"What... what are you doing here?" Lin Xu stammered as she hurriedly wiped away her tears.
Ye Feng took a few steps closer. "I noticed you looked unwell and wanted to check on you. Are you... okay?"
Lin Xu fought back tears and managed a weak smile. "I'm fine; just... caught a bit of a cold."
Ye Feng frowned. "Are you sure? If you're not feeling well, I can take you to the nurse's office."
"No!" Lin Xu nearly shouted in response. "I'm really fine; you... you should go back to Xia Mo."
Ye Feng paused for a moment, "Lin Xu, you..."
"Ye Feng!" Xia Mo's voice came from a distance, "There you are! I've been looking for you everywhere."
Seeing Xia Mo approaching, Lin Xu felt a sharp pain in her heart. She turned to leave, but Ye Feng grabbed her wrist.
"Lin Xu, wait..." Ye Feng hesitated, struggling to find the right words.
Lin Xu shook off his hand. "Let go of me! What more do you want?" Her voice trembled with unshed tears. "You already have Xia Mo, don't you?"
Ye Feng stood frozen, watching Lin Xu run away. Xia Mo walked up to him, puzzled. "What happened?"
Ye Feng shook his head. "Nothing."
Lin Xu rushed back to the classroom and locked herself in a bathroom stall, crying silently. She took out her phone and, with trembling fingers, dialed Ji Jiumei's number.
"Jiumei... I... I can't hold on anymore..." she choked out.
Ji Jiumei arrived immediately and wrapped Lin Xu tightly in her arms. "Silly girl, let it all out. It's okay."
Finally, Lin Xu broke down in tears, pouring out all her grievances and pain. "Why... why can't I be braver... why did I have to wait until I lost him to..."
Ji Jiumei gently patted her back. "Listen to me, Xu Xu. You did nothing wrong; it takes courage to love someone. But it's not too late now, is it? You still have the chance to pursue your own happiness."
Lin Xu looked up, her eyes red and swollen. "But... Ye Feng already..."
"So what?" Ji Jiumei interrupted her. "Do you want to live your whole life in regret? At least try; let Ye Feng know how you feel. Even if the outcome isn't what you wish for, you won't have any regrets."
Lin Xu fell silent for a moment before whispering, "But... I'm scared."
"Scared of what?"
"Scared of being rejected, scared of losing him as a friend, scared... that everything will change."
Ji Jiumei sighed. "Xu Xu, you need to understand that some opportunities are truly fleeting. Are you willing to live your life with this regret?"
Lin Xu shook her head, a glimmer of determination flashing in her eyes.
"Then go," Ji Jiumei encouraged her. "Go tell Ye Feng how you feel. No matter the outcome, at least you'll know you tried."
Taking a deep breath and wiping away her tears, Lin Xu said, "You're right... I need to give it a shot."
Just then, He Miao pushed open the bathroom door and saw Lin Xu's red eyes, a smirk of schadenfreude creeping onto her face. "Oh look, isn't this Lin Xu? Upset because Ye Feng is with Xia Mo?"
Lin Xu shot her head up in anger. Ji Jiumei stepped in front of Lin Xu protectively and coldly replied, "He Miao, what business is it of yours?"
He Miao rolled her eyes. "I'm just trying to be helpful. Lin Xu, you might as well give up. Ye Feng and Xia Mo are such a perfect match; just look at yourself—how can you compare to Xia Mo?"
Lin Xu clenched her fists as tears welled up in her eyes once more. Ji Jiumei glared at He Miao fiercely. "That's enough!"
He Miao shrugged and turned to leave, leaving behind a harsh remark: "Get real, Lin Xu. Someone like you will never win Ye Feng's affection."
Lin Xu stood frozen, trembling all over. Ji Jiumei turned around, looking at her with concern. "Xu Xu, don’t listen to her nonsense..."
Suddenly, Lin Xu lifted her head, her eyes shining with determination. "No, Jiumei. I want to prove to everyone that I, Lin Xu, deserve to pursue my own happiness!"
She strode out of the restroom and headed towards the classroom. Ji Jiumei followed closely behind, both surprised and delighted.
Lin Xu pushed open the classroom door and fixed her gaze directly on Ye Feng. The entire class fell silent, sensing the tension in the air.
"Ye Feng," Lin Xu's voice trembled slightly but remained resolute, "I have something to say to you."
Ye Feng looked at her in confusion. "What is it, Lin Xu?"
Taking a deep breath and summoning all her courage, Lin Xu declared, "Ye Feng, I... I like you. I've liked you since middle school."
A wave of astonishment swept through the classroom. Xia Mo stared at Lin Xu in disbelief, a flicker of unease crossing her face.
Ye Feng stood frozen, seemingly unable to process what he had just heard. "Lin Xu, you..."
"I know you're with Xia Mo now," Lin Xu continued, her voice growing stronger, "but I don’t want to have any regrets. I want you to know that I, Lin Xu, have the courage to pursue my own happiness. Even if... even if I'm rejected in the end, I won't regret it."
The classroom was silent as all eyes focused on Lin Xu and Ye Feng.
Ye Feng opened his mouth but didn’t know what to say. Xia Mo stood up and walked over to Ye Feng, gripping his hand tightly.
Lin Xu watched them with a heartache that felt like a knife cutting through her chest, yet she wore a relieved smile. "I’m done speaking. Ye Feng, no matter what your choice is, I wish you well."
With that, she turned and left the classroom, leaving behind a stunned group of classmates.
Ji Jiumei rushed out after her. "Xu Xu!"
Lin Xu paused and turned back to her friend, tears glistening in her eyes but accompanied by a smile of relief. "Jiumei, I did it. I’m finally... no longer that cowardly Lin Xu."
Ji Jiumei hugged her tightly. "You did great, Xu Xu. I'm proud of you."
Just then, Ye Feng's voice called out from behind them. "Lin Xu, wait!"
Lin Xu turned around to see Ye Feng running towards her, breathless. Her heart raced as she wondered what would happen next.
Standing before her, Ye Feng's eyes were filled with complex emotions. "Lin Xu, I..."
At that moment of tension, a sudden wave of intense pain struck Lin Xu's head. She clutched her temples as darkness clouded her vision and her body uncontrollably fell backward.
"Lin Xu!" Ye Feng exclaimed as he reached out to catch her.
In the final moment before losing consciousness, Lin Xu felt warm arms enveloping her. Then everything faded into darkness.
