Lin Xu stood on the balcony, the night breeze gently tousling her hair as the city lights flickered in the distance. Her heart had yet to settle, and the conversation with Ye Feng echoed in her mind.
"Lin Xu, are you okay?" Ye Feng's voice came from behind her, laced with concern.
She took a deep breath and turned to face him, forcing a smile. "I'm fine, just a bit tired."
Ye Feng stepped closer, leaning against the balcony railing, his gaze drifting towards the horizon. "It's been ten years; I never imagined we would reunite like this."
Lin Xu lowered her head, her voice barely above a whisper. "Yeah, ten years..." Her words caught in her throat. "Ye Feng, congratulations on your upcoming wedding."
Ye Feng suddenly turned to her, surprise flashing in his eyes. "How did you know?"
"Ji Jiumei just called me," Lin Xu replied, suppressing the ache within her. "She said you're getting married next month to a rich beauty."
Ye Feng fell silent for a moment, letting out a sigh. "Lin Xu, actually..."
Just then, Lin Xu's phone rang again. She glanced at it and saw it was a call from her advisor at Peking University.
"I'm sorry; I need to take this call," she said quickly and stepped aside.
"Hello, Teacher Wang."
"Lin Xu, I've reviewed your thesis. Overall, it's good, but it needs some revisions," her advisor's voice came through the line. "When can you come back to Beijing? We should discuss it in person."
Lin Xu paused for a moment before responding. "I'll be back tomorrow."
"Great. Let's meet at my office at two o'clock tomorrow afternoon."
After hanging up, Lin Xu took a deep breath and turned back to Ye Feng. "I'm sorry; I have to leave early. I need to go back to Beijing tomorrow; my advisor wants to discuss my thesis."
A flicker of disappointment crossed Ye Feng's face, but he quickly regained his composure. "It's okay; your studies are important." He hesitated before adding, "Lin Xu, can I give you a ride home?"
Lin Xu shook her head. "No need; I can take a taxi." She forced another smile. "Ye Feng, I wish you happiness in your marriage."
With that, she turned and walked away briskly, not giving Ye Feng a chance to hold her back.
Sitting in the taxi, Lin Xu gazed out at the rapidly passing streets, lost in thought.
"To win the world..." she murmured to herself, recalling the ambitious girl she had been in high school.
Back then, she pushed herself relentlessly to keep up with her studies, sleeping only four hours each night. Even when she fainted in class, she refused to abandon her dreams.
"Ye Feng, do you remember?" Lin Xu silently asked herself. "I once told you, 'To win the world, I have to work harder than anyone else.'"
Memories flooded back like a tide—those days of hardship, pain, confusion, struggle, and... that special feeling for Ye Feng that she had buried deep within her heart.
"But what about now?" Lin Xu asked herself with a bitter smile. "Have I really won the world?"
The taxi stopped in front of Lin Xu's apartment building. After paying the fare, she dragged her weary body into the elevator.
Once inside her home, Lin Xu collapsed onto the sofa. She took out her phone, hesitated for a moment, and then dialed Ji Jiumei's number.
"Hello, Jiumei..."
"Lin Xu? Why are you back so soon?" Ji Jiumei's voice was filled with concern. "Is it because of Ye Feng?"
Lin Xu fell silent for a moment before softly saying, "Jiumei, I... I seem to still not have completely let go."
"Oh, Lin Xu!" Ji Jiumei sighed. "You silly girl, it's been so many years. Why are you still...?"
"I know, I know..." Lin Xu interrupted her. "But when I see him, those memories come flooding back like a tide. I... I can't control myself."
"Lin Xu, listen to me." Ji Jiumei's tone turned serious. "Ye Feng is getting married. You can't keep going on like this. You need to look forward; you have your own career and your own future. Don't waste time on someone from the past."
Lin Xu closed her eyes as silent tears streamed down her face. "I know, but..."
"There are no 'buts'!" Ji Jiumei said firmly. "Lin Xu, do you remember why you worked so hard in your studies? You said you wanted to prove that you were no less than anyone else. Now you've done it. You've been accepted into Peking University and are pursuing your graduate degree. You've won your own world."
Lin Xu fell silent; Ji Jiumei's words struck her like a hammer, awakening her dormant consciousness.
"You’re right, Jiumei." Lin Xu took a deep breath. "I can't keep living like this. I need to look forward; I need to live for myself."
"That's the Lin Xu I know!" Ji Jiumei said with relief. "Remember, you are the best. Don’t let anyone, including Ye Feng, affect your future."
After hanging up the phone, Lin Xu stood up and walked to her desk. She opened her computer and began organizing her thesis materials.
"To win the world..." she murmured softly, her gaze becoming resolute.
The next morning, Lin Xu packed her bags and boarded the train back to Beijing.
Sitting in the carriage, she gazed out at the rapidly passing scenery, feeling an inexplicable sense of relief swell within her.
"Ye Feng," she silently said to herself, "thank you for the encouragement and support you once gave me. But now, I must live for myself. I will continue to work hard—not to prove anything to anyone but to fulfill my own dreams."
As the train slowly pulled into Beijing Station, Lin Xu dragged her suitcase off the platform. The sunlight poured onto her face, warm and bright.
She took a deep breath and allowed a hint of a relieved smile to appear on her lips.
"To win the world," she whispered to herself, "I have to be myself first."
With determined steps, Lin Xu walked toward the campus of Peking University. She knew there was still a long road ahead and many challenges to face. But she was no longer afraid or lost.
She had already found the path that truly belonged to her.
In the library of Peking University, Lin Xu was deeply engrossed in revising her thesis. Her phone vibrated with a message from Ye Feng.
"Lin Xu, I wish you success in your studies. I hope you find your own happiness."
Lin Xu glanced at the message, a ripple of emotion stirring within her, but it quickly settled. She smiled gently and replied, "Thank you. Wishing you happiness in your marriage and a joyful future."
After sending the message, Lin Xu took a deep breath, silenced her phone, and returned her focus to her thesis.
Outside the window, the sun shone brightly, and the leaves swayed gently in the breeze. Lin Xu looked up for a moment, a hint of a relieved smile appearing on her lips.
She knew she had truly let go of the past and was beginning a new chapter in her life.
"To win the world," she silently told herself, "I have to be the best version of myself."
