Qin Feng suddenly had the whimsical idea to take a look at his Destiny Energy. Upon doing so, he immediately set down his book, astonishment evident in his eyes. The Destiny Energy of this scholar was actually of the Yi Hong hue, a level higher than his own. This indicated that the scholar's Destiny Energy was quite strong, suggesting he would certainly be a top candidate in the Provincial Examination.
The Ox Cart came to a halt beside the scholar. Qin Feng suddenly spoke up. The Old Black Bull immediately stopped and turned to look at Qin Feng with a puzzled expression. The scholar was startled by the voice and paused, glancing at the Black Bull, instinctively taking a step back.
"Don't be afraid," Qin Feng said with a smile. "You look like you're also heading to Qingshan Mansion for the Provincial Examination as a Xiu Cai, am I right?"
The scholar was taken aback for a moment, then quickly assessed Qin Feng from head to toe. Seeing the books beside him, he exclaimed in surprise, "Could it be that you are also a Xiu Cai?"
Qin Feng nodded with a smile. "It seems we are fated to meet. Why not join me on the cart?"
The scholar was overjoyed and hurriedly cupped his hands in gratitude. "Thank you very much!"
Without hesitation, he walked around the Black Bull and sat down on the other side of the Ox Cart.
Qin Feng continued, "My sister is in the cart, so you'll have to sit outside."
The scholar quickly replied, "Sitting outside is perfectly fine; I wouldn't want to disturb your sister."
Qin Feng nodded, satisfied with his manners, and patted the Black Bull gently. "Let's continue on."
The Black Bull nodded and resumed its steady pace forward.
The scholar marveled, "This bull can understand human speech?"
Qin Feng chuckled. "Perhaps it's because I've raised him for so long; he has developed some human-like qualities."
"By the way, I haven't asked your name yet," Qin Feng inquired.
The scholar hesitated for a moment before remembering his manners and quickly bowed slightly. "I am Ning Caichen."
Qin Feng's eyes widened in surprise as he exclaimed, "What did you say your name was?" His voice rose slightly.
"Please don't tell me it's too familiar," he thought to himself. After all, this was someone known for communicating with spirits; it couldn't possibly be that person from Liao Zhai.
"Brother, what's wrong?" Qin Wan'er suddenly lifted the curtain of the cart and peeked out curiously at Ning Caichen.
"Ning Caichen hurriedly said, 'I have met the young lady, and I apologize for the disturbance.'
Qin Wan'er also acknowledged the scholar, waving her hand dismissively. 'It's nothing; it's safer with more people around.'
Ning Caichen smiled gratefully at Qin Wan'er before turning to Qin Feng. 'I am indeed called Ning Caichen. May I ask your esteemed name?'
Qin Feng snapped back to reality. 'I am Qin Feng, and this is my sister, Qin Wan'er.'
'Brother Qin, Miss Qin, then I shall not impose further,' Ning Caichen said politely.
Qin Feng squinted slightly. 'Ning Brother, do you know Nie Xiaoqian?'
Ning Caichen looked puzzled. 'Nie Xiaoqian? Who is that? It sounds like a young lady's name.'
Qin Feng breathed a sigh of relief upon hearing this. 'Good, it seems we are talking about different people.'
Suddenly, Qin Wan'er exclaimed in surprise, 'Oh! Nie Xiaoqian!'
Both Qin Feng and Ning Caichen turned to look at her. Qin Wan'er then said to Qin Feng, 'Brother, wait a moment.' She quickly ducked her head back down.
A sense of unease crept into Qin Feng's heart.
'Found it! Thankfully I didn't lose it; I almost forgot!' came Qin Waner's relieved voice from within the carriage.
She poked her head out again, holding a yellowed letter in her hand, which she handed to Qin Feng. 'Brother, Father arranged a marriage for you long ago, and it seems to be with Nie Xiaoqian. Take a look.'"
