"Have you also been assigned to a post outside?" Qin Feng asked with a smile, nodding. "I was sent to the palace because of this matter."
"Did you agree to it?" Ning Caichen asked anxiously.
"Of course I agreed. The Emperor has spoken; how could I refuse?"
Ning Caichen huffed in anger, "What a foolish ruler! Even someone as talented as the top scholar won't be treated well."
Qin Feng chuckled lightly, "It’s nothing. I don’t want to be cooped up in the capital either; it’ll be nice to get out and see the world."
Hearing that Qin Feng had also been assigned outside, Ning Caichen felt a sense of balance return to his heart. "By the way, where have you been assigned?" he asked, his eyes sparkling with curiosity.
Zhu Fang spoke up, "I’m in a county town below Qingshan Mansion, not too far from where I live. It’s convenient for me to bring my parents over to take care of them." He looked quite pleased.
Ning Caichen sighed, "I’m much farther away, in Jiangnan."
"Jiangnan is great! A land of fish and rice, so prosperous," Qin Feng exclaimed, his eyes lighting up with excitement.
Ning Caichen forced a smile, "I’d rather return to Jinhua Prefecture."
Qin Feng became serious. "Ning Brother, take good care of your county town. If you encounter any problems you can’t solve, let Xiao Die come find me."
Ning Caichen was taken aback by Qin Feng's expression and nodded slowly, "Alright, thank you, Brother Qin." He sensed there was something deeper behind those words but couldn’t quite grasp it.
Qin Feng smiled again, "Jiangnan is indeed wonderful. To compete for dominance, what do we need? It’s resources and grain. Just focus on maintaining your county town; when the time comes, you can use it as a springboard to take Jiangnan."
Of course, it was still too early to discuss such matters.
At Zhang Zhu Fu, Qin Feng stood at the entrance with Qin Wan'er beside him.
Qin Wan'er looked puzzled. "Brother, why did you bring me here?"
Qin Feng turned to her and said with a grin, "I have a surprise for you."
Qin Wan'er looked utterly bewildered. Just then, a eunuch hurriedly emerged, approaching Qin Feng with a beaming smile.
"Are you Qin Zi? His Highness has been waiting for you inside. Please, go in," he said respectfully.
Qin Feng nodded and led Qin Wan'er inside. She tightly grasped his hand, her curiosity piqued by the surroundings of the estate.
It was undeniable that Zhang Zhu Fu was extraordinary. The grandeur was evident, with small bridges over flowing water, pavilions and towers, intricate carvings of dragons and phoenixes—everything exuded an air of utmost nobility.
Qin Wan'er was mesmerized, her heart racing with nervousness. Finally, they entered a grand hall where Zhang Zhu immediately descended from his seat.
"Feng Er, Wan'er, you finally made it! Come in and sit down. Someone, bring tea and snacks!" Zhang Zhu said cheerfully.
Qin Feng took a moment to assess Zhang Zhu—dressed in a purple robe with her hair elegantly styled, she seemed to have made a special effort for this occasion.
Qin Wan'er cast a fearful glance at Zhang Zhu and pressed closer to Qin Feng.
Qin Feng shook his head and gently ruffled Qin Wan'er's hair. " Wan'er, do you know who she is?"
Qin Wan'er stammered, "Zhang Zhu?"
Qin Feng chuckled softly. "No, she is your mother."
"What?" Qin Wan'er exclaimed, her voice rising in disbelief. "Brother, are you crazy? This is Zhang Zhu! How could she be our mother?"
Zhang Zhu suddenly reached out and pulled Qin Wan'er closer. " Wan'er, I truly am your mother. Let me explain everything to you slowly; once you hear it all, you'll understand."
Her voice was gentle, and as she looked at Qin Wan'er, she felt an instant fondness for the little girl.
