The warehouse was eerily quiet. Chen Rui and Erin held their breath, their eyes alert as they scanned their surroundings, afraid to make any sound that might shatter the brief tranquility. After narrowly escaping death, their energy was nearly depleted, but Chen Rui knew they couldn't afford to stop. Danger lurked everywhere; one misstep could plunge them back into peril.
"We need to find a way to bypass those pursuers and move further out," Chen Rui whispered, a flicker of urgency in his eyes. "As long as we can leave this area, we'll have more room to maneuver."
Erin nodded, suppressing her fatigue as she leaned against the wall and slowly stood up, taking a deep breath. "You're right, but we must be careful along the way. The warehouse may be a hidden spot, but if the pursuers realize we're here, we'll be cornered."
"Then let's try to exit from the other side." Chen Rui glanced at the warehouse map and noticed a small underground water exit on the left side that might lead them down another path.
The two quickly adjusted their stance and headed toward the small door on the left. Just as they approached it, they heard hurried footsteps accompanied by low murmurs. The pursuers were closing in; they had evidently tracked this area.
"Quick, hide!" Chen Rui signaled urgently to Erin. They swiftly ducked behind a pile of old machinery, holding their breath as they waited for the enemy to draw closer.
The soldiers approached the warehouse cautiously, one of them shining a flashlight around, the beam sweeping across discarded items with a tense determination. "We have to find them this time," one soldier murmured resolutely. "The boss has ordered that they must not escape at any cost."
Another soldier nodded in agreement, his tone cold. "Yes, the boss has arranged for a complete lockdown of the special zone; it’s only a matter of time before we trap them."
Hearing this exchange, Chen Rui and Erin exchanged worried glances, their sense of impending danger intensifying. The boss had indeed marked them as prime targets, and the intelligence they possessed was evidently more significant than they had anticipated.
As the soldiers drew nearer, Chen Rui quietly pulled out a small smoke bomb. He knew that confronting them head-on would be suicidal; instead, he aimed to create a diversion to facilitate their escape.
"Get ready," he whispered to Erin. "When the smoke bomb goes off, we dash left."
Erin nodded and took a deep breath, preparing herself for an immediate sprint.
In the next moment, Chen Rui pulled the pin from the smoke bomb, and a thick cloud of smoke rapidly filled the warehouse. The soldiers jumped in surprise and hastily raised their weapons in alarm, but their vision was completely obscured by the smoke.
"Go!" Chen Rui urged sharply as he led Erin toward the small door on the left.
The smoke enveloped them, concealing their figures as they slipped through the small door into the underground waterway. This path branched out in various directions; though narrow and dark, it at least provided temporary refuge from their pursuers' sight.
"We need to get far away quickly; these people won’t give up," Erin panted as she moved ahead with urgency in her eyes. The boss's subordinates were not to be underestimated.
"Yes, we must remain vigilant," Chen Rui replied while rapidly assessing their situation. "As long as we can avoid their blockade and keep moving forward, we might find an opportunity to contact the outside world."
They advanced through the waterway, surrounded by echoes of dripping water that carried an eerie chill. Soon enough, they reached a more spacious underground chamber filled with abandoned pipes and walls marked by rust—clearly an area long forgotten.
Just as they prepared to catch their breath for a moment, a faint noise suddenly echoed from above—like metal scraping against metal. Chen Rui and Erin quickly pressed against the wall, scanning their surroundings with heightened tension.
"Is someone following us?" Erin asked nervously, her eyes wide with caution.
Chen Rui strained his ears for a moment before nodding slightly. "Yes, they likely locked onto our position when we entered the waterway. It seems they have ways to track our movements."
No sooner had he spoken than a small tracking device fell from an overhead vent with a flickering red light that stood out starkly against the darkness. Quick as lightning, Chen Rui snatched up the device and smashed it against the ground with a sharp crackle of breaking plastic. But they both knew time was running short; enemies could arrive at any moment.
"Move!" Chen Rui urged again.
The two of them quickly traversed the underground space, continuing to run forward. However, at that moment, hurried footsteps echoed from the end of the passage, clearly indicating that their pursuers were closing in. Chen Rui knew they could no longer flee; they had to make a more effective counterattack, or this escape would drag on indefinitely.
He glanced around and his gaze landed on an old pipe system in the corridor, and an idea struck him. He turned to Erin and said, "We can't run anymore; we need to shake them off here."
Erin looked at him in confusion, a flicker of doubt in her eyes. "You mean—"
"I'll hold them off while you continue ahead," Chen Rui said firmly, his eyes unwavering. "I will sabotage the pipes to create obstacles, making it impossible for them to track us for a while."
Erin hesitated for a moment, filled with unease, but she understood that at this moment, she had to trust Chen Rui. They were already in a desperate situation; any further hesitation would only make things more dangerous.
"Alright, be careful," Erin whispered before quickly moving through the underground space, heading further away.
Chen Rui swiftly climbed up the pipe, twisting several old lines until they broke. He then ignited a small explosive device and detonated it. With a loud bang, the passage was engulfed in thick smoke and debris, blocking the enemy's pursuit route.
Through the cloud of smoke from the explosion, Chen Rui heard the soldiers' angry shouts and the chaotic sounds of footsteps, but he did not linger. Taking advantage of the confusion, he quickly left his position and headed in Erin's direction.
In the dark underground space, a glimmer of hope surged within Chen Rui. The escape was still ongoing, but he knew that as long as they did not give up, they would eventually find a glimmer of opportunity. Every danger they faced paved the way for revealing the truth.
