In the days following the destruction of the Biochemical Weapon warehouse, the Special Zone remained unusually quiet. Although Old's subordinates intensified their patrols, they seemed to refrain from taking further action. The city's residents, caught in a mix of fear and an eerie calm, felt as if a storm was about to break.
At the headquarters of the Anti-Special Zone Alliance, however, the atmosphere was tense. Chen Rui, Erin, and Zhao Yunshan gathered in the operations command room, studying the latest intelligence. After the Biochemical Weapon was destroyed, Old had not disclosed this information publicly, clearly attempting to cover up his failure. While this was good news for the alliance, they understood that Old would not let this go easily.
According to our informants, Old had summoned the leaders of various factions to prepare for a sweeping purge across the entire zone. Zhao Yunshan spoke in a low voice, concern evident in his eyes. This time, he was genuinely intent on bloodshed.
"A purge?" Erin frowned. "Is his target us or the ordinary citizens?"
Zhao Yunshan sighed heavily. "It includes both us and all factions he deems disloyal. This is his usual tactic—squashing all potential threats in their cradle."
Chen Rui clenched his jaw, a glint of coldness flashing in his eyes. "This man places no value on life; to him, the Special Zone is merely his private territory."
"The question is, how can we stop him?" Erin's gaze flickered with worry. Even though our strength is growing, facing a full-scale crackdown by the Special Zone Military Police would still be difficult.
After a moment of silence, Chen Rui calmly suggested, "Perhaps we can turn the tables on him. Since Old wants to instill fear, we should let the people of the Special Zone see his true nature and understand who is really threatening their safety."
Zhao Yunshan pondered for a moment before nodding. "Exactly. If we can expose Old's atrocities and make the citizens aware of his brutality, it would significantly weaken his control."
A glimmer of light flashed in Erin's eyes. "So we need evidence—evidence that everyone cannot ignore."
Zhao Yunshan spoke gravely: "Old has countless crimes hidden away. We need a plan that can breach the core defenses of the Special Zone and uncover his wrongdoings."
Chen Rui thought for a moment before suddenly saying, "The Intelligence Center might be a breakthrough point. Most of Old's crimes circulate through there; it should contain his core records."
"The Intelligence Center?" Zhao Yunshan nodded; it was indeed an idea. The problem was how to infiltrate it. The defenses there are the strongest in the entire Special Zone.
The three fell into deep thought. The importance of the Intelligence Center to Old was undeniable; its defense system was not only heavily fortified but also guarded by Old's most trusted loyalists.
"Perhaps we can infiltrate by going undercover," Erin suggested. "We could disguise ourselves as intelligence agents and slip in during a shift change."
Zhao Yunshan shook his head. "Old's agents have very strict identity verification protocols. Anyone not in their system approaching the center would trigger alarms."
Chen Rui stated calmly, "Since a direct assault and disguise are unrealistic, we must dismantle it from within. We need to find a reliable insider who can help us gain access to the Intelligence Center."
"It's nearly impossible to find a trustworthy insider among the employees of the Special Zone Intelligence Center; they are all under Old's close surveillance," Erin said helplessly.
Just then, Chen Rui's phone vibrated suddenly, displaying an encrypted message: Underground bar, eleven o'clock tonight. Codename You Ying has intelligence to exchange.
Upon reading this message, Chen Rui paused slightly before a flicker of vigilance crossed his eyes. You Ying was a deeply hidden informant within the alliance responsible for infiltrating Old's intelligence system. Since the establishment of the alliance, You Ying had provided countless crucial pieces of information, yet their true identity remained a mystery.
After reading the message, Zhao Yunshan frowned and said, "You Ying hasn't contacted us in so long; this appearance must mean there is important intelligence."
Erin asked with confusion, "Could this be a trap set by Old?"
