As night fell, the Special Zone lay in tranquil silence. However, Chen Rui was filled with restlessness. He stood before the holographic map in the Operation Command Center, his gaze fixed on the screen above. The latest intelligence indicated that the main Experimental Base of the dark currents was likely hidden within an abandoned underground city, codenamed Shadow City.
Shadow City? Lin Xi stood beside Chen Rui, her brow furrowed. Are there such places around the Special Zone?
Director Zhao nodded, his expression serious. This is from the Underground Project decades ago, initially constructed to counter the threat of a Nuclear War. However, due to its abrupt halt, this underground city was never officially activated and gradually forgotten. Now, it has become a hideout for the dark currents.
How did they find this place? Chen Rui asked.
Most likely through old files from the black market. Director Zhao sighed. The terrain here is complex, and although the facilities are old, they still provide sufficient space and secrecy, making it very suitable as their Experimental Base.
Lin Xi scoffed. In such a hidden place, they might think no one could find them.
Director Zhao nodded. But we have already identified several suspicious entrances. Your mission now is to infiltrate Shadow City, locate the laboratory of the dark currents, and obtain their core data on the Abyss Project.
Taking a deep breath, Chen Rui asked in a low voice: What about our support?
Director Zhao handed over a combat plan. To avoid alarming them, this operation will be executed in a Squad format, focusing on stealth. We will provide technical support, but you must complete the mission with minimal personnel.
A few hours later, Chen Rui and the Squad led by Lin Xi arrived at an entrance to Shadow City. It was an abandoned industrial area, and the air was thick with a decaying odor. The entrance was covered with thick metal plates but had clearly been tampered with, revealing a narrow passageway.
Looks like we came to the right place. Lin Xi turned on her flashlight, illuminating the depths of the passage.
Chen Rui whispered: Move carefully and maintain formation.
The Squad entered the underground space through the passage, which was unusually dimly lit; only the beams from their flashlights illuminated small areas ahead. The walls were covered in thick Moss and rust, and a damp smell permeated the air.
As they ventured deeper, they began to sense something unusual about this place. Occasional footprints appeared on the ground, and some graffiti could be seen on the walls. More unsettling were the low humming sounds echoing around them, as if some massive machinery was operating in the distance.
That sound... Lin Xi paused, it seems like some kind of Electric Control.
They must be here. Chen Rui lowered his voice and gestured for the Squad to continue forward.
After a long stretch of passageway, their field of vision suddenly opened up. They arrived in a vast underground space where dim lights were installed along the walls, casting an eerie glow over the entire Area. It was cluttered with abandoned equipment and debris; however, in one corner, they could clearly see installed Surveillance Cameras.
Indeed, someone is active here. Lin Xi whispered; these monitoring devices are state-of-the-art—clearly installed by the dark currents.
Nodding in agreement, Chen Rui signaled for the Squad to move deeper inside. Soon enough, they discovered a staircase leading downwards; at its base was a metal door secured with a keypad lock.
Lin Xi, it's up to you now. Chen Rui said.
Crouching down, Lin Xi took out her Cracking Tool, quickly getting to work. A few moments later, there was a beep from the keypad lock as it released; slowly, the metal door creaked open.
However, just as the door swung open, several laser beams shot out from within and swept across the bodies of the Squad. An ear-piercing alarm blared instantly as red lights flashed on, enveloping the entire Area in a tense atmosphere.
Oh no! We've been discovered! Lin Xi sprang up swiftly and drew her weapon.
"All personnel, enter combat mode and retreat inside the door, quickly!" Chen Rui commanded decisively.
The squad rushed through the metal door, only to find themselves in a narrower corridor, its walls lined with complex pipes and wires. The sound of hurried footsteps echoed from the end of the passage, clearly indicating that armed personnel from the dark forces were approaching.
"Prepare for battle!" Chen Rui shouted.
Combat erupted swiftly. The armed personnel from the dark forces were well-equipped, but the narrow corridor limited their advantages. Chen Rui and his squad quickly dispatched the first wave of enemies with precise tactics. However, a greater danger loomed as heavy footsteps reverberated from afar, causing the ground to tremble.
"What is that?" Lin Xi asked, a hint of tension in her voice.
Chen Rui observed calmly, his gaze sharpening. "It could be an Abyss Warrior."
In the next moment, a massive figure appeared at the end of the corridor. It was an exceptionally large Abyss Warrior, clad in modified armor, with eerie red lights glowing from its eyes. Without a moment's hesitation, it charged directly at the squad.
"Open fire!" Chen Rui commanded, and bullets rained down upon the Abyss Warrior. However, the creature's defense was astonishing; ordinary bullets failed to inflict any substantial damage. It swung its enormous arms, smashing through equipment in the corridor, filling the space with the deafening sound of metal colliding.
"Use high-explosive grenades!" Lin Xi shouted as she retrieved a specially designed grenade from her backpack.
The grenade landed precisely at the feet of the Abyss Warrior, and a violent explosion engulfed its figure in an instant. Yet when the smoke cleared, the creature merely staggered slightly before continuing its relentless advance toward them.
"Fall back!" Chen Rui ordered as the squad quickly retreated.
During their withdrawal, Lin Xi detonated one last high-explosive grenade at a support point in the corridor, causing a collapse that temporarily blocked the Abyss Warrior's pursuit.
Though they had escaped for now, the entire squad understood that this mission was far more challenging than anticipated. "We need to find the Core Area of the laboratory as soon as possible and destroy all experimental data on these monsters; otherwise, they will keep producing more Abyss Warriors," Chen Rui said through gritted teeth.
Lin Xi wiped sweat from her brow, her gaze resolute. "We must keep moving; we can't stop."
The squad adjusted their stance and pressed deeper into Shadow City, ready to face unknown dangers and challenges ahead.
