As night fell, when Chen Rui and his team returned to the command center, they were utterly exhausted. The lights of the base shone brightly against the dark backdrop, serving as a barrier that kept the dangers of the outside world at bay. However, Chen Rui knew this was merely a brief respite. The data they had just retrieved from the Dark Current Experiment Base could potentially turn the tide of the battle, but it might also unveil an even greater nightmare.
Zhou Zheng immediately plugged the hard drive into the main computer of the command center. Streams of data flooded the screen, and members of the Technical Team gathered around to begin analyzing the information.
"What can this tell us?" Lin Xi's face was pale, yet she stood resolutely beside Chen Rui, her gaze fixed on the screen.
"It will take time," Zhou Zheng wiped his sweat. "But I can assure you that it contains core information regarding Abyss Warriors and Consciousness Upload Technology."
"Let’s hope it’s worth the price we paid," Chen Rui said coldly. He glanced up at the large screen hanging above the command center, where the mission codename Prison Cage continued to flicker, reminding them of the high risks involved in this operation.
Director Zhao approached, his gaze heavy as he surveyed the group. "You all did well, but the situation is more complicated than we anticipated."
"What do you mean?" Chen Rui asked with a furrowed brow.
Director Zhao pointed to a segment of the analysis report on the screen: "The experiments conducted by Dark Current are not merely about controlling consciousness. They are attempting to split human consciousness into multiple modules to control various mechanical units."
Lin Xi was taken aback. "So you're saying a single human consciousness could be fragmented into countless pieces to control hundreds or thousands of Abyss Warriors?"
"Exactly," Director Zhao nodded. "We previously thought these Abyss Warriors were just machines, but in reality, their operational logic is derived from human consciousness—more accurately, from forcibly uploaded and fragmented consciousness."
A heavy silence fell over the command center.
Chen Rui took a deep breath, his gaze turning colder. "Are those who were uploaded still alive?"
Zhou Zheng glanced at the data hesitantly before speaking up. "Technically, maybe. Their consciousness has been fragmented, but each piece still operates, attached to these machines. But they can no longer be considered whole humans."
Lin Xi whispered, "Do they know they've been fragmented?"
"They might know, or they might not," Director Zhao sighed. "That’s the terrifying aspect of Dark Current. Their technology has surpassed our understanding, and these experiments are just the tip of the iceberg."
The head of the Technical Team quickly typed on his keyboard until a hidden file within the data stream was unlocked. A video popped up on the screen—it was a test record from the Experimental Base.
In the video, a young Experimenter was forcibly strapped to a chair, electrodes protruding from his head as he wore an expression of sheer agony.
"Please begin uploading," a cold Mechanical Voice echoed.
Suddenly, the Experimenter's body convulsed violently; his eyes glazed over before he emitted a terrible scream. His consciousness was forcibly extracted, and beams of light flowing through the electrodes seemed to transmit his thoughts. On the other side of the screen, an Abyss Warrior's eyes lit up and began to move slowly.
"Test successful," the Mechanical Voice announced again.
As the video ended, an oppressive silence enveloped the entire command center.
"This is Dark Current's experiment," Zhou Zheng said in a low voice, trembling slightly. "They are severing and uploading human consciousness and then forcibly binding it to mechanical bodies. This is not just a crime; it is a complete violation of humanity."
Chen Rui clenched his fists tightly, anger radiating from his eyes. He had known about Dark Current's cruelty, but witnessing it firsthand ignited an uncontrollable fury and sorrow within him.
"Do these Experimenters have names?" Lin Xi asked suddenly, her voice low.
"Yes," the head of the Technical Team nodded. "This data contains their basic information, but they are mostly unidentified personnel. They may have been forcibly abducted by the Dark Stream."
"They were once living people," Lin Xi murmured, her gaze hardening. "We must stop all of this at any cost."
Just as the Technical Team continued to analyze the data, the base's alarm system suddenly blared to life. Red warning lights flashed wildly, followed by a piercing alarm that echoed throughout the command center.
"What happened?" Director Zhao exclaimed, his expression grave.
A technician reported nervously, "The command center's network is being hacked! It's the Dark Stream! They're trying to remotely destroy the data we've just acquired!"
"Damn it! Disconnect all external connections immediately!" Director Zhao shouted.
"It's too late! Their hacking speed is too fast!" The technician was sweating profusely, frantically pounding on the keyboard, but the rate of data flow changes far exceeded their defensive measures.
"Chen Rui!" Director Zhao turned to him. "The data on that hard drive is our last hope! Take it and leave the base immediately!"
Chen Rui nodded, quickly unplugging the hard drive and instructing Lin Xi and Zhou Zheng to stay close: "To the backup evacuation point!"
"But what about the base?" Lin Xi asked.
Director Zhao replied solemnly, "We will hold this place. Your mission is to protect that data; it’s more important than any of our lives!"
Without hesitation, Chen Rui took the hard drive and swiftly left the command center with his squad. They had barely made it out the door when a series of violent explosions erupted in the distance. The Dark Stream was not only hacking remotely; they were employing more direct means to destroy this place.
"It seems they are determined to uproot us," Lin Xi gritted her teeth, her weapon raised and alert.
"Even if it's hell, we will fight our way out," Chen Rui said coldly, his gaze resolute. "Don't look back."
The path away from the base was destined to be anything but quiet. They had not run far when heavy footsteps echoed from the darkness ahead. The familiar sound of metal scraping sent a chill down their spines—Abyss Warriors were coming.
"Prepare for battle!" Chen Rui ordered in a low voice, gripping his weapon tightly.
In the dim night, the enemy's red eyes gradually emerged, a cold killing intent enveloping the entire squad. This battle was inevitable, and the cost of protecting their data might be heavier than they had imagined.
