Deep within the tunnel, Chen Rui, Lin Xi, and Zhou Zheng moved cautiously forward, constantly aware of any potential movements behind them. The echoes of the explosion gradually faded, but the feeling of being watched by something unseen grew stronger.
That pile of rubble should hold them off for a while. Zhou Zheng wiped the sweat from his forehead, his tone somewhat self-reassuring.
Lin Xi remained silent, glancing back with a furrowed brow. I’m not so optimistic.
Chen Rui raised a hand to signal them to be quiet, then whispered, Don’t let your guard down. Even if those Abyss Warriors can’t get past the rubble, the dark current has other means.
The three continued onward, the rusted subway tracks creaking beneath their feet. The walls of the tunnel were covered in mold, and a damp, decaying odor filled the air.
Why does this place feel like a graveyard? Zhou Zheng couldn’t help but mutter under his breath. Why would the dark current target a place like this?
This is exactly the kind of place to hide things. Lin Xi replied quietly; every move of the dark current has its meaning. Their choice of this location is definitely not coincidental.
They had barely walked a few dozen meters when a low rumble suddenly echoed from behind them, followed by the sound of shifting rubble. The three immediately halted, holding their breath as they turned to look at the dark pile of debris.
Did you hear that? Zhou Zheng swallowed hard, his voice trembling.
I heard it. Lin Xi quickly raised his weapon, pointing it towards the source of the sound; it seemed they hadn’t been completely blocked off.
Chen Rui observed the darkness calmly, his gaze sharp. No, that sound doesn’t resemble a Mechanical Warrior; it’s more like something larger.
Before he could finish speaking, a massive force suddenly swept through the rubble, and a brand new Mechanical Warrior slowly rose from the debris. Unlike the Abyss Warriors that had pursued them earlier, this machine was much larger than an ordinary Abyss Warrior, its limbs as thick as those of a giant beast, with a pulsating purple Energy Core embedded in its chest.
What is that? Zhou Zheng asked in shock.
Lin Xi’s expression grew increasingly grave. I’m not sure, but it looks like an upgraded model from the dark current—possibly designed specifically to hunt us down.
Chen Rui tightened his grip on his weapon and said in a low voice: It’s not here to chat with us; prepare for battle!
The Abyssal Behemoth let out a deep mechanical roar and began to lumber toward them with heavy steps. Each step caused the ground to tremble slightly, like a predator stalking its prey.
Attack its core! Chen Rui decisively shouted as he fired first, bullets raining down on the purple glow in the Mechanical Beast's chest. However, its armor was exceptionally tough; upon impact, only sparks flew without any effect.
Ineffective! Lin Xi gritted her teeth; its armor is too thick!
Try targeting its leg joints! Zhou Zheng suggested as he raised his grenade launcher and aimed at the beast's knee joint, firing off a grenade. The explosion illuminated the tunnel momentarily and caused the behemoth to hesitate for a second before it continued advancing as if nothing had happened.
This thing's defense is insane! Zhou Zheng shouted.
Chen Rui quickly analyzed their situation, scanning the tunnel's surroundings. He noticed a metal support beam at the top of the tunnel that seemed to be under considerable strain. If they could break that beam, perhaps they could create a collapse.
Lin Xi, Zhou Zheng, cover me! Chen Rui shouted as he switched to armor-piercing rounds in his rifle and aimed at the support beam.
Understanding his intent, Lin Xi and Zhou Zheng immediately spread out while firing at the behemoth to draw its attention. However, this Abyssal Behemoth seemed singularly focused; it completely ignored Lin Xi and Zhou Zheng and continued to advance toward Chen Rui step by step.
"It's targeting you!" Lin Xi shouted loudly.
"Just right!" Chen Rui gritted his teeth and continued to pull the trigger. The bullets accurately struck the support beam, producing a series of sharp metallic cracking sounds.
The giant beast seemed to sense the danger; it suddenly accelerated, raising its massive metallic arm to swing at Chen Rui, creating a gust of wind.
"Dodge!" Lin Xi exclaimed in alarm.
Chen Rui decisively rolled to avoid the attack, but the beast's strike grazed his shoulder, knocking him hard to the ground. At the same time, the support beam finally could not bear the weight and collapsed with a thunderous metallic crash.
Rocks and debris rained down from the ceiling of the tunnel, burying the giant beast beneath the rubble.
As the dust gradually settled, Lin Xi and Zhou Zheng rushed to Chen Rui's side, helping him up.
"Are you okay?" Lin Xi asked anxiously.
"I'm still alive," Chen Rui replied, coughing as he moved his shoulder. However, it felt nearly useless.
"What about the beast?" Zhou Zheng nervously glanced at the pile of rubble, fearing it would rise again.
"It should be taken care of," Lin Xi said quietly. "But we can't waste any more time; the evacuation point is just ahead."
The three supported Chen Rui and quickly retreated deeper into the tunnel.
A few minutes later, they finally arrived at a rusted iron door. Lin Xi pushed it open with all her strength, and the night breeze filled with the scent of grass and trees rushed in.
"We're out!" Zhou Zheng sighed in relief and nearly collapsed onto the ground.
Lin Xi didn't relax; she picked up her communicator to contact Director Zhao. "We've reached the exit; requesting assistance."
"Good. Our team is on their way to your location. Hold on!" Director Zhao's voice conveyed a hint of reassurance but was laced with urgency.
Chen Rui leaned against the iron door, looking up at the starry sky as he gasped for breath. "This is just the beginning. The dark forces are moving too quickly; we need to be faster than them."
Lin Xi nodded, her gaze resolute. "No matter what they are hiding, we will uncover it and destroy it completely."
The night was deepening, and the silhouettes of the three appeared even more resilient. From deep within the rubble behind them came faint metallic clinking sounds once again, as if some power was awakening anew.
