The Rising Machine flew steadily through the night sky, but inside the cabin, an indescribable oppressive atmosphere lingered. Lin Xi, Chen Rui, and Zhou Zheng leaned wearily against their seats, their bodies covered in dirt and blood, looking disheveled. Zhou Zheng's left leg was simply bandaged, yet he was still sweating from the pain.
"This operation was too dangerous," Lin Xi said softly, her gaze lingering on the wound on Chen Rui's shoulder. "If the support had arrived even a moment later, we might have been wiped out."
Chen Rui let out a cold laugh. "We're still alive; that's a stroke of luck amidst misfortune. It's a pity we couldn't bring back the wreckage of those Mechanical Warriors. The core technology of the Dark Current remains a mystery."
"They will come again," Director Zhao's voice came from the cockpit, heavy and stern. "Such things never appear just once. The true objective of the Dark Current cannot be merely to test the performance of warriors."
"Objective?" Lin Xi asked. "Director Zhao, what do you really know? These Mechanical Warriors are not ordinary combat units; their design is clearly tailored to exploit our weaknesses."
Director Zhao fell silent for a moment before responding, "When we return to base, I will explain everything to you. But before that, you must prepare yourselves; the next mission will only be more difficult."
A chill breeze seeped through the gaps in the cabin, bringing with it a sense of foreboding. Chen Rui looked out the window, contemplating Director Zhao's words. Clearly, this encounter with the Mechanical Warriors was just the beginning; the crisis behind it was far more complex than they had anticipated.
Just as he was lost in thought, a faint beeping sound suddenly emanated from Zhou Zheng.
"What’s that sound?" Lin Xi asked alertly, quickly standing up from her seat.
Zhou Zheng froze for a moment before looking down to check, realizing that the sound came from a communication device in his backpack. Chen Rui furrowed his brow and swiftly moved over to retrieve the device from Zhou Zheng's bag.
"This isn't our communicator," Chen Rui examined it closely and found that it bore the emblem of the Dark Current.
"A communicator from the Dark Current?" Lin Xi's expression hardened. "How did this end up with us?"
Zhou Zheng's face turned pale instantly. "I—I don’t know! It might have fallen off during our skirmish with the Mechanical Warriors? I just picked it up."
"You just picked it up?" Chen Rui shot him a cold glare. "Do you realize this could expose our location?"
"Enough!" Director Zhao interrupted them sharply. "Check this device immediately to confirm if there’s a tracking signal!"
Without hesitation, Chen Rui connected the communicator to his portable terminal for scanning, and the results appeared quickly.
"Damn it! It is indeed transmitting a signal!" Chen Rui cursed under his breath. "Our location has been compromised!"
Director Zhao's expression darkened immediately as he quickly radioed the pilot: "Change course! Head straight for Backup Base!"
"How far are we from Backup Base?" Lin Xi asked, her face tense.
"Twenty minutes," Director Zhao replied grimly. "But the problem is that these Mechanical Warriors may move faster than we think."
Meanwhile, deep within the jungle, among the wreckage of a destroyed Mechanical Warrior, blue light flickered back to life. Its main control unit was damaged, but its core processing module continued to function.
"Target signal locked," the Mechanical Warrior intoned in a cold electronic voice as its severed arm began to mechanically stretch out as if attempting to regain mobility.
Further away, another intact Mechanical Warrior was swiftly navigating through the dense forest. Upon receiving the emitted signal, its speed increased once more as it set its sights directly on the flying Rising Machine.
The actions of the dark current never ceased. Inside the Rising Machine, the atmosphere grew increasingly tense.
"They might have caught up to us," Lin Xi said, picking up her weapon and preparing for any sudden developments.
"We can't just sit here and wait," Chen Rui said calmly. "Director Zhao, can the pilot use the terrain to hide our flight path? For example, flying close to the mountains to reduce the chances of being tracked by radar?"
"It's being executed," Director Zhao nodded, but the problem is that the Mechanical Warriors are not ordinary enemies; they may have mastered unique tracking technologies.
Zhou Zheng frowned and whispered, "What else can we do? Should we jump out now?"
"Shut up," Lin Xi shot him a glare. "Exposing ourselves in the air is even more dangerous than now."
After a moment of thought, Director Zhao made a decisive decision: "Lin Xi, prepare the combat cabin; Chen Rui, continue analyzing the signal source of the communicator to try to disrupt their tracking system; Zhou Zheng, you monitor the situation around us."
"Understood!" The three immediately sprang into action, each fulfilling their role.
The Rising Machine continued its flight, and soon after, the onboard radar blared an alarm.
"Unusual signals detected ahead!" the pilot shouted. "High-speed moving targets are rapidly approaching!"
"They're coming!" Lin Xi quickly loaded her firepower and opened the cabin door, her gaze fixed on the darkness outside.
Suddenly, a silhouette of a Mechanical Warrior emerged swiftly from the night, leaping closer to the Rising Machine with the height of the treetops.
"Adjust altitude!" Director Zhao commanded. "Increase our flying height; don't give it a chance to get close!"
The pilot operated swiftly, and the Rising Machine shot upwards. The Mechanical Warrior did not give up; it unfolded two mechanical wings from its back and emitted blue ion flames.
"It can fly?!" Zhou Zheng exclaimed. "What kind of monster is this?"
Without hesitation, Lin Xi opened fire. The gunfire sliced through the night as a dense rain of bullets rained down on the Mechanical Warrior. It nimbly dodged in mid-air, with only a few bullets striking its exterior, sparking minor flashes.
"Its defense is stronger than ground models!" Lin Xi gritted her teeth. "How many of these things are there?"
"Stop asking meaningless questions!" Chen Rui shouted. "Focus on bringing it down!"
Inside the Rising Machine, combat intensified. With Lin Xi's covering fire, Chen Rui and Zhou Zheng provided support while the pilot showcased exceptional flying skills, allowing them to temporarily shake off the threat of the Mechanical Warrior. Yet they all understood that this was merely a brief respite.
The pursuit by the dark current was far from over.
To be continued...
