An abnormal thermal signal? Chen Rui immediately pulled up the relevant data. After glancing at it, his expression changed slightly; the intensity of the signal was unusual, resembling that emitted by a large, continuously operating device.
"We need to go there and investigate," Director Zhao said in a deep voice.
The next morning, the Squad was ready to set out.
Before departure, Lin Xi stood at the entrance of the basement, her gaze complex as she looked at the sky outside. "I have a feeling that this mission will hold something different for us."
"Are you scared?" Zhou Zheng teased while adjusting his weapon.
"Scared?" Lin Xi turned to glance at him, sneering. "I mean, it feels like an adventure with no return."
Zhou Zheng was momentarily taken aback and fell silent.
Chen Rui came over and patted her shoulder. "Don't worry; no matter what monsters lie ahead, we will prevail. Remember, we are not ordinary people."
"Yes, we are the Shadow Blade Team." Lin Xi took a deep breath and put on her headset.
The air in the Wasteland was thick with a strong scent of decay, surrounded by collapsed buildings and ruins covered in dust. The Squad drove a modified camouflage vehicle, discreetly navigating through the abandoned roads.
Three miles ahead lay the target Area. Chen Rui confirmed their location through the vehicle's detector; a problematic signal interference was beginning to strengthen.
It seems the undercurrents do not want anyone getting close here, Director Zhao said. "Continue forward; everyone stay alert."
The vehicle slowly stopped behind a concealed hill. After several members disembarked, they quickly began reconnaissance operations.
Using drones, they observed that at the center of the target Area stood a massive Dome Building. Its outer walls were riddled with cracks, and a faint blue light emanating from within indicated that something inside was still operational.
"It hasn't been abandoned," Lin Xi murmured. "This place looks like a giant battery."
"More like an Energy Core," Chen Rui added. "What it's specifically used for will require us to get closer to find out."
Director Zhao glanced at his watch. "We have ten minutes until the patrol drones pass by here. Let's move during this window and find the control center as quickly as possible once we're inside."
Understood.
The group nodded to each other and stealthily approached the target building.
As they neared the Dome Building, Lin Xi suddenly halted, strange static crackling in her earpiece.
"Wait," Lin Xi whispered. "Did you hear that?"
Zhou Zheng frowned. "Hear what?"
Lin Xi turned up the volume on her headset; the static became clearer, resembling some kind of whispering.
Someone was speaking. Her expression changed slightly, but there shouldn't be anyone here.
As the words fell, a sharp mechanical screech echoed through the Dome Building, followed by an overwhelming sense of suffocating pressure in the air around them.
There’s an ambush! Director Zhao growled, preparing for battle!
