As soon as Lin Xi's voice fell, the air around them felt as if it had been ignited in an instant, becoming unbearably oppressive. A strange whisper echoed from an unknown source, resonating in their ears and seemingly carving an irresistible sense of fear directly into their minds.
Director Zhao suddenly waved his hand, signaling everyone to disperse and take cover, while pressing down on his communicator. "Lin Xi, can you hear me clearly? What's the situation?"
"It's clear." Lin Xi replied in a lowered voice, but the sweat in her palms had already soaked through the gloves gripping her gun. "I can feel something nearby watching us."
"Where?" Chen Rui quickly activated the thermal imaging equipment. The screen displayed a thermal map of their surroundings, but it was eerily quiet, showing no anomalies.
"No heat sources," Chen Rui frowned. "Are they not living beings?"
"It could be some kind of Mechanical Entity," Director Zhao said in a low voice. "Everyone stay alert and don't act recklessly."
Just as he finished speaking, Lin Xi suddenly caught sight of a shadow flickering behind a nearby abandoned pillar.
"There's something!" She raised her gun sharply, aiming in that direction.
The others swiftly entered combat mode, their guns all pointing toward where Lin Xi indicated. At that moment of tense anticipation, a piercing metallic scraping sound suddenly filled the air, followed by a blurred figure hurtling towards them from above the building.
"Scatter!" Director Zhao shouted, and everyone immediately dispersed to avoid the impending threat.
The figure crashed heavily onto the ground, kicking up a cloud of dust. Lin Xi crouched behind cover, squinting to see what it was. It was a Mechanical Entity covered in silver armor. It had a spider-like body but boasted two thick forelimbs resembling massive blades that glinted with a cold light.
"What the hell is that thing?" Zhou Zheng shouted as he opened fire.
The bullets struck the armor of the Mechanical Entity but only sparked harmlessly off its surface without penetrating it at all.
"The armor is too thick!" Chen Rui cursed under his breath and quickly switched weapons to try out a shock grenade.
He pulled out a special grenade from his backpack, pulled the pin, and hurled it at the Mechanical Entity. The moment it exploded, it released a powerful shockwave that sent the Mechanical Entity staggering back several meters.
"Effective!" Seeing this, Lin Xi immediately pulled out a similar grenade and threw it at the target.
However, the Mechanical Entity seemed to have adapted to the shockwave attack; it straightened up again and plunged its blade-like forelimbs into the ground with an ear-piercing metallic shriek.
"It's calling for reinforcements!" Director Zhao's face changed dramatically. "We need to take it down fast!"
Lin Xi and Zhou Zheng opened fire simultaneously, aiming for the joints of the Mechanical Entity, but their bullets proved ineffective. Just then, Chen Rui shouted, "Watch out! There's a faint Energy Core on its back! Aim for that!"
"Cover me!" Lin Xi gritted her teeth and jumped out from behind cover, quickly circling around to the back of the Mechanical Entity.
The Mechanical Entity seemed to sense her intentions and abruptly turned to swing its forelimbs at her. But Director Zhao decisively fired his weapon, hitting one of its visual sensors and drawing its attention away.
"Keep pressing!" Director Zhao commanded as he coordinated with Zhou Zheng to keep firing at the Mechanical Entity.
Seizing the opportunity, Lin Xi drew her dagger and slashed open the armor on its back, revealing a faintly glowing core. Without hesitation, she squeezed the trigger on her gun, firing a precise armor-piercing round that struck true at the core.
The Mechanical Entity let out a piercing wail, its entire body shaking violently before it finally collapsed to the ground.
