"Lin Xi, what did you discover?" she asked urgently.
Chen Rui didn't answer; instead, he enlarged the data on the screen. It displayed a series of jumping waveforms that ultimately formed a blurry image. Within that image, countless massive shadows could be faintly seen moving in some kind of abyss, as if they were waiting to be unleashed like ferocious beasts.
"What are those?" Zhou Zheng asked, his scalp prickling. "Are they on the other side of the rift?"
"Yes," Chen Rui murmured. "The rift is not just an entrance; it functions more like a dual bridge. Dark currents flow through it, guiding those unknown entities into our realm, and now, they may have partially crossed over."
"Damn it!" Director Zhao cursed under his breath and quickly ordered, "Destroy it! At all costs!"
"Wait!" Chen Rui suddenly shouted. "Destroying it will cause the rift to spiral completely out of control! We need to find the core node and shut it down in a specific way!"
"Where is the core node?" Lin Xi asked anxiously.
Chen Rui gritted his teeth as he looked toward the blue light. "It's deep within that glow. The problem is—"
Before he could finish, the blue light flickered violently, and a dark shadow leaped out, rushing toward them!
"Watch out! Enemy attack!" Director Zhao shouted, leading the charge to fire.
The shadow moved with incredible speed; bullets pierced through its form without inflicting any substantial damage. It was a pure energy entity, its shape constantly shifting as if mocking humanity's attempts to attack.
"We can't kill this thing!" Zhou Zheng yelled in frustration.
"It is a manifestation of the rift's energy," Chen Rui quickly analyzed. "We need to use high-frequency pulse weapons against it!"
"Lin Xi!" Director Zhao called out loudly, pulling out a pulse grenade.
Lin Xi swiftly retrieved a specially designed pulse grenade from her backpack, aimed at the core of the shadow, and hurled it forward with all her strength.
The grenade exploded mid-air, releasing a wave of high-frequency pulses. The shadow let out a piercing scream before disintegrating into thin air.
"Effective!" Lin Xi sighed in relief. "How many more of these things are there?"
"It should just be part of the rift's defense mechanism," Chen Rui wiped the sweat from his brow. "We need to close the rift quickly; otherwise, more of these entities will emerge."
Director Zhao nodded. "Chen Rui, find the core; we'll cover you."
Chen Rui clenched his jaw and continued operating the equipment, his fingers flying over the keyboard. "I've locked onto the node's location and am decoding it. It will take some time."
"Hurry up!" Zhou Zheng said, scanning their surroundings warily as he sensed more entities approaching!
The blue light from the rift grew increasingly bright, and the air around them began to feel hot and thick. Lin Xi felt each breath was like swallowing flames, while a low humming sound seemed to herald death from another realm.
"The node decoding is complete!" Chen Rui suddenly stood up. "I can remotely close the rift, but I need to manually trigger the final step."
"Who is going?" Lin Xi asked immediately.
Director Zhao did not hesitate. "I will go. You provide cover."
Lin Xi wanted to say something more, but Director Zhao's gaze swept over, filled with determination.
"Cover Captain!" Lin Xi gritted her teeth, raising her gun and aiming at the blue light.
As Director Zhao's figure charged into the core of the rift, a deadly confrontation began once again.
