"Destroy?" The voice grew deep and angry. "You don't even know its true meaning! Foolish humans, you think this is a threat, yet it is your only hope!"
"Hope?" Director Zhao's steps halted as he tightened his grip on his weapon. "You want these monsters to invade our world and destroy everything?"
"Monsters?" The voice let out a low, mocking laugh. "They are merely tools, and a greater existence awaits your awakening."
"Enough of this nonsense." Director Zhao gritted his teeth. "Tell me the location of the core, or I will blow this place to pieces."
"Go ahead and try," the voice taunted. "Let’s see whether your strength is greater or my will is more unyielding."
Director Zhao did not respond further; he had already locked onto the core's position. It was a floating sphere emitting a strong blue light, surrounded by intricate strands of energy.
"This is it." Director Zhao inserted the detector into the core node and manually activated the shutdown procedure.
"The captain's signal is becoming unstable!" Chen Rui said nervously, watching the fluctuating graph on the screen. The energy from the rift was rising rapidly; he might not have time to retreat.
"We have to go help him!" Lin Xi said through gritted teeth, but Zhou Zheng stopped her: "Going in there is suicide!"
"But we can't leave him behind!" Lin Xi shot an angry look at Zhou Zheng. "Are you just going to watch him die alone?"
"Do you think I want that?" Zhou Zheng shouted back. "But if we rush in now, we won't be able to help him; we'll only ensure his sacrifice!"
The two were at an impasse, the atmosphere tense to the breaking point.
"Enough!" Chen Rui suddenly shouted. "There's nothing we can do right now; the only thing we can do is trust him!"
Lin Xi clenched her teeth and reluctantly lowered her gun.
Inside the rift, Director Zhao's shutdown procedure entered its final countdown.
"Ten seconds remaining." Director Zhao watched the numbers on the screen, a cold smile creeping onto his lips. "You’ve lost."
"Foolish," the voice said darkly. "Shutting down the rift won't stop my plans. The real game has only just begun."
As the countdown reached zero, the blue light of the core dimmed abruptly, and the entire rift began to tremble violently as if experiencing an apocalyptic collapse.
Director Zhao's figure was completely engulfed by the blue light.
Outside, a blinding flash erupted from the center of the rift before it vanished entirely, leaving the ruins in eerie silence.
"Captain!" Lin Xi was the first to rush forward, but the rift had completely closed, and Director Zhao's figure was nowhere to be seen.
Everyone fell silent, the atmosphere heavy and suffocating.
"He completed his mission," Zhou Zheng said quietly, his voice tinged with unmasked sorrow. "But he also sacrificed himself."
"It's impossible!" Lin Xi shouted angrily. "He must still be alive! We have to find a way to bring him back!"
Chen Rui remained silent, his fists clenched tightly. He knew that this time, Director Zhao might really not come back.
