In the late-night conference room of the base, everyone was fixated on the coordinates of a signal source from an abandoned laboratory displayed on the screen. The laboratory was located in a desolate mountainous area, abandoned over a decade ago due to an undisclosed incident, and had since been classified as a closed Area, with no one daring to approach it.
"How could there possibly be a signal from this place?" Lin Xi questioned, especially considering it was the Director's communication record.
"I find it strange too, but this is currently our only lead," Chen Rui calmly analyzed. "Regardless, we need to verify it in person."
Zhou Zheng furrowed his brow and turned to the mission commander. "This operation could be extremely dangerous; we need more detailed intelligence."
"The intelligence team is already investigating the background of this laboratory," the commander whispered. "But you should know that most of the information about this place has been classified as top-secret files. Even we cannot easily access them."
"Top-secret files?" Lin Xi scoffed. "Is there anything more classified than the Rift in this base?"
The commander paused for a moment before slowly saying, "The abandoned laboratory was once part of a project called the Dawn Project, which was halted over a decade ago. Its main mission was to explore interdimensional communication technology, and it is said that during the experiments, an unstable spatial rift was opened."
"Is it related to the rifts we've encountered?" Chen Rui suddenly tensed.
"We cannot confirm that, but given the timeline, there may be a connection," the commander replied, taking a deep breath. "The coordinates of the laboratory are not listed in any official records. The signal source you detected is revealing its exact location for the first time."
As dawn broke, Lin Xi, Chen Rui, and Zhou Zheng's squad boarded the Rising Machine and headed towards the site of the abandoned laboratory. The atmosphere was so oppressive that it felt suffocating; everyone understood that this mission was far from a simple search operation.
As the Rising Machine approached the coordinates, a vast expanse of dilapidated building ruins gradually came into view. Most of these structures had collapsed, with only a few fragmented steel frameworks still standing like tombstones in a wasteland.
"It doesn’t look like anyone could still operate here," Zhou Zheng said quietly as he scanned the area with binoculars. "This place feels lifeless; where could a signal come from?"
"Regardless of whether it's real or not, we need to check it out," Lin Xi said as she checked her equipment and jumped down from the Rising Machine.
The squad made their way along a path overgrown with weeds, gradually approaching the laboratory's Core Area. A faint metallic rust smell hung in the air, instilling an inexplicable sense of unease.
"This place seems to have been deliberately cleaned up," Chen Rui crouched down and pointed at some marks on the ground. "Someone has been here recently."
"Were they their accomplices?" Zhou Zheng asked.
"Or perhaps..." Lin Xi lowered her voice, "it was them."
No sooner had she spoken than a low humming sound suddenly echoed around them. Lin Xi immediately raised her weapon and scanned her surroundings warily, but saw nothing.
"The instruments are showing Energy Fluctuation ahead," Chen Rui's voice trembled slightly. "And it's strong."
"Approach the target slowly," Zhou Zheng commanded in a low voice as the squad continued deeper into the laboratory.
The entrance to the laboratory featured a half-covered steel door, which was covered in patches of rust and showed signs of disturbed soil visible through its cracks.
"This door looks like it was forced open," Lin Xi examined the lock quietly. "But why is there no surveillance or warning outside?"
"Maybe they didn't need any warnings at all," Chen Rui speculated. "If this place is indeed related to the rifts, just getting close would already be dangerous."
Lin Xi remained silent as she cautiously pushed the door open, and the scene inside made everyone gasp in shock.
The walls of the laboratory were covered with intricate symbols and lines, seemingly painted with some special pigment that reflected an eerie glow under the flashlight's beam. The floor was littered with shattered instruments and scattered documents, as if it had endured a sudden and catastrophic disaster.
