The air in the room became thick, as if pressed down by an invisible force, making it hard to breathe. The walls around them vibrated slightly in response to a low, humming sound, while the energy sphere grew increasingly radiant.
"Who is speaking?" Zhou Zheng stared intently at his surroundings, a hint of fear lacing his voice; that voice did not belong to Director Zhao!
"It's not human." Lin Xi tightened her grip on her weapon, her gaze fixed firmly on the energy sphere hovering in mid-air. "We must act immediately, or things will spiral out of control."
Before the squad could discuss further, the deep voice echoed again: "You think you can close the passage? You do not understand; it has already consumed everything, including him."
Director Zhao's figure flickered within the energy sphere. He raised his head, looking at Lin Xi and the others with a complex expression. "Leave this place and don't worry about me."
"Absolutely not!" Lin Xi shouted fiercely. "Director, we will not abandon you! Chen Rui, can you find a way to shut this thing down?"
Chen Rui quickly scanned the data on his instruments, his brow furrowing tighter. "No, the core's internal energy is too strong. Unless we can sever its connection to the rift, all attempts will fail."
"Sever the connection?" Lin Xi murmured, suddenly struck by an idea. "Where is the connection point for the rift?!"
Chen Rui immediately pulled up an energy distribution map of the laboratory and pointed to a bright spot. "In the Main Control Room. That’s where the Energy Nexus is located. If we can destroy that hub, the energy flow from the rift will be cut off."
"Where's the control room?" Lin Xi asked urgently.
"It's in the next Area!" Chen Rui replied, though his tone carried a hint of hesitation. "But there's one thing you need to know: if we forcibly destroy the hub, the rift here will go completely out of control."
"What happens if it goes out of control?" Zhou Zheng asked quietly.
"The passage will completely collapse and may affect the entire Area," Chen Rui said grimly. "We have no idea what kind of disaster its energy explosion could trigger."
"So we have to take a gamble," Lin Xi said decisively. "If we don’t act, the consequences after the rift erupts will only be worse!"
The squad quickly left the central laboratory and headed towards the Main Control Room. Every step they took was fraught with danger as their surroundings began to warp, as if something unseen was creeping closer.
"Watch your step!" Zhou Zheng suddenly shouted. Lin Xi looked down and saw that the ground beneath her feet was cracking open, torn apart by some powerful force.
"This isn't a natural phenomenon." Chen Rui stared at his detection device, his face pale. "The rift's energy is spreading; it's trying to consume the entire laboratory!"
"Don't stop! Get to the control room!" Lin Xi gritted her teeth.
When they finally reached the Main Control Room, they were once again taken aback by what lay before them. The entire room was shrouded in a layer of purple energy mist, with a central console floating in mid-air surrounded by several rotating rings, as if some unknown device was in operation.
"These rings must be part of the Energy Nexus core," Chen Rui observed as he analyzed their surroundings. "If we can destroy them, the energy flow will break."
"Then let’s get to work!" Lin Xi quickly pulled out an Explosive Device and secured it near the console.
"Wait!" Zhou Zheng suddenly stopped her. "These devices don’t look like simple machinery; they might be protected by some kind of energy shield. A direct explosion might not be effective."
"Is there a better way?" Lin Xi asked.
Chen Rui quickly operated the instrument, trying to analyze the structure of the energy flow, but the data displayed on the screen made him break into a cold sweat: "Oh no, these energy fluctuations are self-adjusting! They seem to have some sort of self-defense mechanism!"
"Self-defense?" Lin Xi said coldly. "Then they'll have to defend against me."
As she spoke, she drew her weapon and aimed at one of the energy rings, firing continuously. The bullets were deflected upon contact with the ring, turning into tiny sparks.
"It's useless! They've integrated with the Rift Core," Chen Rui exclaimed anxiously. "We need to find the Rift Source Signal; otherwise, these rings can't be destroyed!"
At that moment, the energy fluctuations in the control room intensified suddenly, and a figure slowly emerged from one of the rings.
Lin Xi's pupils constricted slightly. The figure was Director Zhao, but his eyes were hollow, and his movements were stiff, as if he had lost consciousness.
"Director!" Zhou Zheng couldn't help but shout, but Director Zhao seemed not to hear him. He mechanically raised his hand, and behind him, a massive rift was gradually appearing.
"The Rift Source Signal!" Chen Rui gasped. "It's him! Director Zhao's body is being used as a vessel for the rift!"
Lin Xi's heart sank. She immediately understood that if they wanted to sever the rift's energy connection, they would have to take action against Director Zhao.
"Damn it!" Lin Xi muttered under her breath, clenching her fists. "Is there any way to free him from the rift?"
Theoretically, if they could interrupt his connection before the Energy Nexus completely shut down, he might still survive. Chen Rui operated the instrument rapidly, but his tone lacked confidence.
"Then let's gamble on this!" Lin Xi gritted her teeth. "Zhou Zheng, cover me! Chen Rui, you handle shutting down the hub!"
With her weapon drawn, Lin Xi charged toward Director Zhao's position without hesitation. Just then, a dark shadow surged from the rift; its form was distorted, as if composed entirely of pure energy, radiating a chilling murderous intent.
"Lin Xi, be careful!" Zhou Zheng immediately opened fire in an attempt to stop the shadow from approaching.
Lin Xi dodged while moving closer to Director Zhao. She slowly reached out her hand, trying to grasp him. But just as her fingertips were about to touch him, Director Zhao's figure suddenly trembled violently as if controlled by something and vanished deep into the rift.
"Director!" Lin Xi shouted, but all she received in response was a low echo from within the rift: "You will ultimately be unable to stop this."
