The deep echoes reverberating through the fissure intensified the heavy atmosphere in the control room. Lin Xi stared intently into the depths of the crack, her fists clenched so tightly that her knuckles turned white. The figure of Director Zhao seemed to dissolve into a wisp of smoke, being torn into the unfathomable darkness.
The director murmured to herself, her voice tinged with helplessness yet burning with defiance.
"Lin Xi! Don't just stand there!" Zhou Zheng's sharp shout jolted her back to reality; the shadows were drawing closer!
She quickly turned around, only to see the number of shadows surging from the fissure rapidly increasing. Their twisted forms seemed endless, enveloping the entire control room in a shroud of blackness.
"Chen Rui! What's the status on closing the hub?" Lin Xi fired back at the encroaching darkness while urgently questioning.
Chen Rui was furiously typing on the console, sweat beading on his forehead. "The energy suppression program has been initiated; it will take five minutes to complete the shutdown! The problem is—"
Before he could finish, a loud crash erupted from behind them. A shadow darted towards the console at lightning speed. Zhou Zheng reacted swiftly, raising his gun and firing to repel it, but the force of the impact nearly knocked Chen Rui off his feet.
"Damn! These things are getting more and more uncontrollable!" Zhou Zheng cursed, his ammunition running low yet failing to diminish the number of shadows—it was like an endless pit!
Lin Xi gritted her teeth, quickly organizing her thoughts. These shadows were clearly part of the fissure's energy; continuing to engage would only deplete their resources. The only way out was to complete the hub's shutdown operation, but Director Zhao's situation gnawed at her heart.
"Zhou Zheng, cover Chen Rui! I'm going into the fissure!" She suddenly made up her mind, her gaze icy as she looked toward the black abyss.
"Are you crazy?!" Zhou Zheng stared at her in disbelief. "Do you know what that means? It's a monster that devours everything!"
Lin Xi shook her head, her tone resolute. "Director Zhao is inside; he's our only lead. More importantly, he's my captain—we can't abandon him."
Zhou Zheng was momentarily speechless and turned to Chen Rui, hoping for a more rational suggestion.
Chen Rui's expression was equally complicated. He paused his work and said quickly, "Theoretically, the Core Area of the fissure is the most unstable part of the passage. Anyone who enters will suffer severe mental erosion and might even be trapped there permanently."
"So I might not come back," Lin Xi scoffed lightly. "Then I have to try even harder. How many times has Director Zhao saved us? This time, it's our turn."
"You can't go!" Zhou Zheng suddenly stepped forward and grabbed Lin Xi's arm. "We're a team now, not a lone hero saving someone! If you go in, it'll become even harder to control!"
"It's not me that's hard to control; it's the fissure itself." Lin Xi forcefully broke free from Zhou Zheng's grip. "Once Chen Rui completes his operation, this place will collapse, and the fissure will close for good. If Director Zhao is still inside, I have to take a gamble and bring him out!"
Her tone was filled with an undeniable determination that left both Zhou Zheng and Chen Rui stunned.
"There isn't much time left." Lin Xi hesitated no more; she adjusted her gear and drew out a short blade, securing it firmly to her wrist. "See you in five minutes."
"Wait!" Chen Rui suddenly called out to her. "There's not much I can do, but I can set up a temporary locator for you. If things go south, I'll try to pull you back from the entrance of the fissure."
"Thanks." Lin Xi patted Chen Rui on the shoulder as she took the locator device and dashed toward the fissure without looking back.
The world inside the fissure completely shattered Lin Xi's understanding of reality.
