The night sky surrounding the base was illuminated by an unusual glow, with the edges of the crack emitting a faint luminescence, as if some kind of sentient power was slowly seeping out from within. When Lin Xi and Zhou Zheng led their squad to the scene, the deep rumbling sound from afar made each of their steps feel particularly heavy.
What is that? Zhou Zheng raised his binoculars, gazing intently at the center of the crack.
Through the lens, he could clearly see a blurry figure standing beside the fissure, as if waiting for something. The figure resembled neither a human nor any known creature; its outline twisted in the light of the crack, appearing both real and illusory.
Lin Xi took the binoculars and looked for a few seconds before frowning: It’s not human.
What do you mean? Zhou Zheng asked.
It seems like an extension of the crack itself, Lin Xi said slowly, or perhaps it is some kind of existence born from the energy of the fissure.
Whatever it is, its presence here means trouble. Zhou Zheng tightened his grip on Wu Lan; we need to figure out what it wants.
At that moment, the fluctuations from the crack intensified, and small tremors began to shake the ground in the distance. The air around them was filled with a sharp metallic scent.
Everyone be careful! Keep your distance! Lin Xi signaled for the squad members to spread out and form a perimeter while gradually approaching the edge of the fissure.
Leader Lin, Chen Rui's voice came through the communicator. According to my data, the crack is undergoing an energy assembly. This phenomenon might be aimed at opening a larger passage. You need to stop it; otherwise, the consequences could be catastrophic!
How do we stop it? Lin Xi asked in a low voice. Is direct attack effective?
It might be possible, but there are risks involved. If the energy of the fissure is unstable, an attack could trigger an even greater reaction.
Lin Xi paused for a moment before making a swift decision: Zhou Zheng, take two people to draw its attention while the rest follow me to the edge of the fissure to find a way to close it.
Understood! Zhou Zheng nodded and quickly led two team members around to the other side of the crack. They swiftly launched a probing attack against the guardian of the fissure.
The guardian reacted with astonishing speed; its black tentacles lashed out like lightning, intercepting all ammunition fired by Zhou Zheng. At the same time, it let out a low growl, and the light from the crack suddenly intensified, compressing the surrounding air and making it nearly impossible to breathe.
This thing’s defense is too strong! Zhou Zheng gritted his teeth. Our Wu Lan can’t break through it at all!
While directing his squad to continue advancing, Lin Xi quickly analyzed the situation. Her gaze fell on the center of the crack where energy fluctuations were most intense; it seemed to conceal some kind of core.
Perhaps we don’t need to defeat it directly, she said calmly. Its task is to protect the fissure; if we can destroy its core, we might force it to disappear.
Where’s the core? Zhou Zheng asked while dodging attacks.
Lin Xi raised her detector; data on its screen indicated that the glowing mass at the center of the fissure was indeed the source of energy fluctuations: right there! We need to get close, but we have to be quick!
The team led by Lin Xi rapidly approached the Rift Core while Zhou Zheng continued to hold off the guardian. Their actions seemed smooth, but danger lurked closely behind them.
Suddenly, fluctuations from the fissure became even more violent; large tremors shook the ground as debris from nearby buildings was swept away by powerful energy, turning instantly into dust.
Hurry! There’s not much time left! Lin Xi shouted as she charged toward the center of the fissure.
However, just as they were about to approach the core, a dark shadow suddenly blocked their path. It was the Guardian's Tentacles, which seemed to sense their intentions and wildly waved to obstruct anyone trying to get close to the rift.
"Retreat!" Lin Xi shouted as she pushed a teammate aside and faced the oncoming attack from the Tentacles.
"Leader Lin! No!"
But it was too late. The Tentacles struck Lin Xi's armor with a heavy blow, sending her crashing to the ground. She let out a muffled groan and struggled to rise, but the Tentacles were already coming at her again.
"Stop!" Zhou Zheng roared, detonating a grenade that blew apart a nearby barrier, buying Lin Xi a moment of time.
Taking advantage of the distraction, Lin Xi rolled to the side and quickly regained her composure. "I'm fine! Keep moving forward!"
At that moment, the Rift Core had become exceptionally unstable, and through the radiant light, some indistinct images began to emerge. Lin Xi gritted her teeth and charged toward the core, discovering that it was actually a floating, translucent Crystal, within which something resembling a forming creature seemed to be hidden.
"What is it creating?" Lin Xi murmured in astonishment.
"Leader Lin!" Chen Rui's voice crackled through the communicator. "That Crystal might be the core of the rift! If you can destroy it, you can stop the rift's expansion!"
Lin Xi took a deep breath and drew an Explosive Device from her waist. "Got it, I’ll handle this!"
She quickly adjusted the timer and power settings on the device before firmly pressing it against the surface of the Crystal. Just as she finished setting it up, the Guardian's Tentacles lunged at her again, sending her flying.
"Lin Xi!" Zhou Zheng dashed toward her without hesitation, helping her up from the ground.
"Quickly retreat!" Lin Xi gritted her teeth. "The Explosive Device has been activated; now it's up to time!"
The squad swiftly withdrew from the rift's vicinity as an explosion echoed behind them. A powerful shockwave surged forth, knocking everyone to the ground.
When they stood up again, they found that the glow of the rift had completely vanished, and the Guardian's figure had also disappeared without a trace.
"Did we do it?" Zhou Zheng panted.
Lin Xi glanced at the detector in her hand and confirmed that the Energy Fluctuation from the rift had ceased. She nodded slowly. "For now, yes. But this is far from over."
Her gaze fell upon the distant burning ruins, and she felt an unsettling sense that an even greater danger was approaching.
To be continued...
