Under the cover of night, the convoy sped along the desolate wasteland road, the tires kicking up clouds of dust that swirled like thick fog behind them. Lin Xi sat in the passenger seat of an off-road vehicle, gripping the communicator tightly as Chen Rui's voice relayed real-time intelligence into her ear.
"Leader Lin, the Energy Fluctuation is getting stronger; you're about two kilometers away. But strangely, there are no signs of Rift Creation activity nearby," Chen Rui's voice carried a hint of urgency.
Lin Xi furrowed her brow. "No Rift Creation? That doesn't make sense."
"Yes," Chen Rui paused, "and the intensity of the fluctuations is relatively stable, like some sort of artificial interference."
Hearing this, Lin Xi's alertness spiked instantly. She quickly turned to the driver and commanded, "Slow down! Everyone, enter combat readiness status and prepare for an ambush!"
The convoy immediately reduced speed, and team members tightened their grips on their weapons, scanning their surroundings warily. Zhou Zheng's voice came from the rear vehicle. "Leader Lin, this might be a trap. Should we take a detour?"
Lin Xi's gaze was steely. "If we detour, we'll lose the source of the fluctuations. If they’ve set a trap, then we’ll meet them head-on and figure out their intentions."
The source of the Energy Fluctuation brought the convoy to a halt. Before them lay a crumbling ruin, surrounded by rusted mechanical debris and rubble. The wind swept through, carrying with it sharp wails that echoed eerily.
"The signal is just ahead," Chen Rui's voice crackled through the communicator.
Lin Xi looked up to see a black metallic device in the center of the ruins. The device was circular and covered in strange symbols, emitting a dim blue light—the source of the Energy Fluctuation.
"This is...?" Zhou Zheng whispered. "Some kind of Beacon?"
Lin Xi didn't respond but gestured for her team to approach. She inspected the device closely; before she could touch it, the blue light suddenly flickered violently and then dimmed rapidly.
"Not good!" Lin Xi exclaimed as she stumbled back.
Almost immediately, the ground shook violently, and dozens of fissures appeared around the ruins. Red light pierced through the night sky as Rift Creations surged forth. Their forms were more grotesque than before, eyes gleaming with a ravenous hunger as if they had been waiting for this moment.
"Battle formation!" Lin Xi commanded sharply, and her team quickly spread out to form a circular defensive array.
The sounds of fierce gunfire erupted within the ruins.
As Lin Xi directed her team while accurately firing her energy weapon, she dispatched several Rift Creations with precise shots. However, she soon realized that there were far more monsters than anticipated, continuously pouring out from the fissures.
"Leader Lin! We're running low on ammunition!" one team member shouted.
"Conserve ammo! Prioritize eliminating close-range threats!" Lin Xi ordered calmly while contacting Chen Rui through the communicator. "Is there any reinforcement available from base?"
"We're mobilizing the next squad; we need at least ten minutes!" Chen Rui's tone was anxious.
Lin Xi gritted her teeth. "We’ll hold on!"
Just as she issued her command, a Rift Creation suddenly ambushed her from behind, its sharp claws lunging toward her. In a split second, a blue beam struck true, hitting the monster in its head and killing it instantly. Lin Xi turned to see Zhou Zheng standing not far away, his gun still smoking.
"Be careful, Leader Lin," Zhou Zheng said with a frown.
Lin Xi nodded and turned back to the battle. However, the situation was not developing in their favor. The number of Rift Creations was overwhelming, and their team was gradually being encircled, with casualties beginning to rise. Lin Xi realized that if this continued, everyone would be trapped here; she had to make a decision.
At that moment, she heard Chen Rui's voice through her communicator: "Leader Lin, I've detected an anomaly!"
"What kind of anomaly?" Lin Xi asked while firing her weapon.
According to real-time monitoring, the activity range of these rifts seemed to be constrained by something; they wouldn't leave this Ruins Area.
"Constrained?" Lin Xi thought quickly, her gaze sweeping over the metallic device in the center of the ruins, a vague suspicion forming in her mind.
"Everyone, pay attention!" she shouted. "These monsters are controlled by that device! Our target is to destroy the Beacon!"
The team immediately shifted their focus to the device. Despite the frantic attempts of the Rift Creations to obstruct them, under the cover of Lin Xi and Zhou Zheng, Chen Rui successfully carried an Explosive Device and detonated the Beacon.
With a deafening explosion, the Beacon was reduced to rubble, and the surrounding rifts closed as well. The Rift Creations lost their energy source and quickly crumbled into ashes.
As the smoke cleared, silence returned to the ruins. After accounting for casualties, Lin Xi wearily sat on a stone, gazing at the sky gradually lightening in the distance.
"This is not the end," she whispered. "It's just a probing move by the enemy."
Zhou Zheng approached and handed her a bottle of water. "We've proven one thing: they are not invincible."
Lin Xi took the water and nodded, determination rekindling in her eyes. "That's right. From now on, we must act faster and more decisively to find the true mastermind behind this."
The morning breeze swept through the ruins, slowly burying the traces of battle. Lin Xi knew that the smoke from this night was far from over.
To be continued...
