The morning sunlight filtered through layers of mist, casting a glow over the ruins, yet this light seemed unable to dispel the shadows left by the night. Lin Xi stood atop a high point, her gaze sweeping over the abandoned streets, fixating on the distant remnants of the city. Although the destruction of the node had temporarily driven back Rift Creation, she knew well that the true enemy had yet to reveal itself.
"Leader Lin, these are the clues we found," Zhou Zheng stepped forward, handing several tattered documents to Lin Xi.
Lin Xi took the documents and quickly flipped through them. Despite being eroded by time, key information was still discernible.
"What is the Abyss Project?" Lin Xi murmured, her brow furrowing tighter.
"We found these documents in a corner of the laboratory," Zhou Zheng explained. "From the content, it seems to be a research project of some Secret Organization related to the emergence of Rift Creation."
Lin Xi's eyes turned cold at the mention of the Secret Organization. They not only created rifts but also plunged the entire Area into this endless chaos.
Meanwhile, in a hidden underground base, a man clad in a black trench coat stood before a massive monitor displaying Lin Xi and her team's movements among the ruins.
"The node has been destroyed," a deep voice emanated from behind the screen.
The Mysterious Man in Trench Coat scoffed, his tone laced with disdain. "Let them revel in their small victory for now. The real core is still far from their reach."
A voice from the other side of the screen continued, "But their actions are indeed faster than expected, especially that captain named Lin Xi; she has already uncovered some crucial clues."
The Mysterious Man in Trench Coat waved his hand dismissively. "No need to worry; our plan has already entered its next phase. Once the Abyss Project is fully activated, everyone on this land will become our pawns, including them."
The images on the screen gradually blurred as the Mysterious Man's figure faded into darkness, and an eerie silence enveloped the room.
Unbeknownst to Lin Xi, every step she took was under enemy surveillance. She handed the documents to Chen Rui, signaling him to analyze their contents more thoroughly while instructing her team to prepare for what lay ahead.
"Chen Rui, what do you make of these documents?" Lin Xi asked.
Chen Rui spread the documents out on the table and pointed to one section. "This Abyss Project appears to revolve around research on rift energy. They seem to be attempting to harness this energy to create some powerful weapon or possibly devices for controlling organisms or altering ecosystems on a large scale."
"So, Rift Creation is merely a byproduct?" Zhou Zheng asked in surprise.
"That could be one way to interpret it," Chen Rui replied solemnly. "However, their existence may not just be an unintended consequence but rather intentionally designed experimental subjects."
Lin Xi pondered for a moment before saying, "Regardless, we must locate this project's Core Area. If these plans are fully realized, there will be no hope left for this land."
The team continued eastward, following Chen Rui's analysis toward another suspicious Energy Fluctuation point located deep within the city ruins. However, as they stepped onto the edge of the ruins, an unsettling aura enveloped them.
"Everyone be cautious; something feels off here," Lin Xi whispered.
The surrounding buildings had been ravaged by time, yet a strong scent of decay permeated the air, mingled with an underlying hint of blood.
"This doesn’t feel like an ordinary ruin—" Zhou Zheng's words were cut short as an eerie laughter suddenly echoed from a corner.
The team quickly raised their weapons and turned toward the source of the sound. Yet in that corner stood nothing but a broken mirror quietly reflecting their anxious faces.
"Don't come any closer!" Lin Xi shouted, stopping a team member who was trying to approach. "It's a trap!"
Suddenly, the mirror emitted a blinding light, forcing everyone to shut their eyes against the intense glare. When the light faded, Lin Xi found herself in a completely unfamiliar environment, surrounded by endless darkness. Beneath her feet was a narrow path that stretched into an unseen distance.
"Leader Lin? Are you there?" Zhou Zheng's anxious voice came through the communicator.
"I'm here, but it seems we've been transported to a different space," Lin Xi replied, glancing around in an attempt to locate the rest of her team. The silence was unnerving, with only the sound of her own footsteps echoing in the darkness.
Meanwhile, other team members had also been transported to different areas.
Zhou Zheng discovered himself enveloped in a gray mist, where whispers floated around him, causing him to grip his weapon tightly. He tried to contact the others through the communicator but only received fragmented echoes in response.
What are these whispers saying? Zhou Zheng strained to decipher their meaning, but every time he moved closer to the source of the sounds, they grew more indistinct.
On another front, Chen Rui found himself in a replica of a laboratory, with walls covered in complex formulas and diagrams. On the experimental table lay an object similar to the crystal they had previously destroyed.
What is this? An illusion? Chen Rui attempted to touch the crystal on the table and was surprised to find it solid and real. He sensed that this place might hold some crucial clues.
Lin Xi continued down the narrow path when suddenly, a figure appeared before her. The silhouette stood with its back turned, slender and clad in a black trench coat, looking eerily familiar.
"Who are you?" Lin Xi demanded sharply, raising her weapon.
The figure slowly turned around, revealing a face that was both strange and unsettling. A peculiar smile curled at the corners of his mouth as he spoke in a deep voice: "Captain Lin Xi, welcome to the Abyss."
