Lin Xi ran swiftly, the sounds of gunfire and explosions fading behind her. Intermittent reports crackled through her earpiece, revealing that Zhou Zheng's squad had engaged the enemy in a fierce firefight within the mine. 0

"Leader Lin! The enemy numbers exceed our estimates! We need reinforcements!" Zhou Zheng's voice was laced with urgency. 0

"Hold on! I'm on my way!" Lin Xi replied, quickening her pace. 0

The internal passages of the mine were a labyrinthine maze, with walls coated in thick layers of dust and a slippery floor. The air was heavy with a suffocating sulfur smell. Under the dim lights, Lin Xi quickly assessed her surroundings, racing toward the direction of the gunfire and explosions. 0

Meanwhile, Zhou Zheng's squad was locked in intense combat near the warehouse. They took cover behind the mine's structures, but the enemy's firepower was overwhelming, gradually forcing them into a corner. 0

"Cover me!" Zhou Zheng commanded as he pulled the pin from a high-explosive grenade and hurled it toward the enemy position. 0

Boom! 0

In the explosion's wake, several enemies were thrown back, but more reinforcements surged from deeper within the mine. These foes were well-equipped and moved with precision, clearly having undergone rigorous combat training. 0

"They're stalling for time!" Zhou Zheng gritted his teeth. "We must breach before they complete their deployment!" 0

"But Zhou Team, the warehouse door is locked tight! We can't get in!" a team member exclaimed anxiously. 0

Zhou Zheng glanced at the thick metal door, his brow furrowed. "Does Chen Rui have any breaching tools?" 0

"No. This door requires special access cards or code cracking," the team member replied. 0

"Then we'll force it open!" Zhou Zheng decisively ordered. He retrieved a small explosive device from his waist and quickly set it up on the hinges of the metal door. 0

"Everyone fall back and prepare for detonation!" 0

Three seconds later, a deafening blast echoed as the thick metal door was blown open, releasing a strong wave of sulfuric air. Zhou Zheng was the first to charge inside, weapon raised in caution. 0

The sight inside the warehouse was shocking. 0

The floor was littered with black ore, each piece glowing faintly as if absorbing surrounding light. In the center stood a massive apparatus resembling an inverted drill, its top connected to a gigantic sphere etched with intricate runes. 0

"This is the Shadow Stone Device," Zhou Zheng murmured, quickly scanning for any hidden enemies before reporting to Lin Xi via communicator. "Leader Lin, we've entered the warehouse and discovered what appears to be an Abyss Device." 0

"Is there any way to destroy it?" Lin Xi's voice came through. 0

"Not sure yet." Zhou Zheng observed the device closely, noting that its base was connected to several thick pipes seemingly channeling energy from the Shadow Stone to some deeper area. 0

Just then, the device emitted a low hum, causing the surrounding ore to tremble slightly. 0

"It’s activating!" one team member shouted in alarm. 0

"Everyone retreat! Now!" Zhou Zheng bellowed as he attempted to shut down the control panel of the device. But as soon as his hand touched it, a powerful shockwave blasted him away, slamming him against the wall. 0

The Zhou Team rushed forward to help him up. Zhou Zheng coughed up blood and raised his hand to stop the team members from getting closer. "Don't touch it! This thing has a defense mechanism!" 0

Lin Xi finally arrived at the entrance of the warehouse in the mining area, witnessing the chaotic aftermath of the battle and the blown-open metal door. She dashed inside and caught sight of Zhou Zheng being helped up. 0

"What’s going on?" Lin Xi asked, her gaze sweeping over the device, her expression immediately turning serious. 0

"The device has been activated, and it has a powerful defense mechanism," Zhou Zheng gasped. "We can't get close at all." 0

"How long until Chen Rui arrives?" Lin Xi inquired. 0

"At least ten minutes." 0

"We don't have time," Lin Xi frowned. "We must find a way to stop this thing from operating immediately." 0

She approached the device, carefully examining the runes with her tactical flashlight. The arrangement of the runes resembled some ancient language, flickering with irregular light as if conveying information. 0

"This device is not an ordinary piece of machinery; it might be combined with some unknown technology," Lin Xi stated. "Even if Chen Rui arrives, he may not be able to crack it." 0

"What should we do then?" Zhou Zheng asked. 0

"Use the simplest method." Lin Xi pulled out a set of high explosives from her backpack and directly strapped them to the interface of the device's pipeline. 0

"Leader Lin, are you sure?" one team member asked cautiously. 0

"The pipeline is likely its energy transmission core. If we cut this off, it should stop," Lin Xi replied decisively. 0

Once everyone retreated to a safe distance, Lin Xi pressed the detonator. 0

Boom! 0

In the explosion, the pipeline was severed, and the massive device emitted a piercing shriek as the runes gradually extinguished. But just as everyone let out a sigh of relief, the spherical part of the device suddenly cracked open, and a shadow shot out rapidly, heading straight for Lin Xi! 0

"Leader Lin, watch out!" Zhou Zheng shouted, raising his gun to shoot, but the bullets passed through the shadow without effect. 0

Lin Xi quickly sidestepped to avoid it, but the shadow clung to her like a second skin, wrapping around her as if it were a giant net. 0

She felt a wave of dizziness wash over her, and her vision blurred. A low, eerie voice echoed in her mind: "You cannot change your fate." 0

"Leader Lin! Hang in there!" Zhou Zheng rushed forward, wildly slashing at the shadow with his weapon but still unable to budge it an inch. 0

In that critical moment, a blinding white light shot in from the entrance of the warehouse. Chen Rui arrived with reinforcements from their squad; they carried high-energy pulse weapons that struck the shadow, forcing it back. 0

"Leader Lin, are you okay?" Chen Rui asked anxiously as he helped up the fallen Lin Xi. 0

Lin Xi forced herself to stand, her gaze resolute. "It's nothing, but the enemy has revealed a greater secret. The Abyss Project is far more complex than we imagined." 0

She lifted her head, looking toward the direction where the shadow had just vanished, her eyes filled with deep vigilance and determination. 0

To be continued. 0
