The radiant altar pierced through the darkness of the desert, standing like a mysterious relic beyond time and space. Lin Xi halted before the altar, extending her hand to grasp the heated crystal ball, as if it were attempting to respond to some kind of summons.
"These statues seem to be watching us," Chen Rui remarked in a low tone as he surveyed the surroundings. He noticed that each stone figure's eyes were fixed on the center of the altar, as if guarding some crucial secret.
"Look at these inscriptions." Wang Ya approached the altar, illuminating a section of the stone wall covered in symbols with his flashlight. "Is this Ancient Language?"
Lin Xi squinted, moving closer to the wall. Her fingertips traced over the intricate symbols, and she could vaguely discern some meanings. "This records the legend of a door and a key," she murmured. "The altar is the door, and the key," she lifted the crystal ball, "might just be in our hands."
"Are you sure we want to open it?" Zhou Zheng asked uneasily. The previous encounters with Alien Creatures had already been troublesome enough; opening this door might unleash an even greater disaster.
"But we have no choice." Lin Xi turned her head, her gaze resolute. "This crystal ball led us here for a reason; it must hold key clues hidden within the altar. If we stop now, all those sacrifices will be in vain."
"Are you ready?" Lin Xi stood at the center of the altar, holding the crystal ball tightly as she confirmed with her teammates.
"I'm ready to move at any moment," Chen Rui replied, gripping his weapon and scanning the surroundings cautiously.
"I hope nothing unexpected happens," Wang Ya sighed, positioning himself behind Lin Xi.
"Let's begin." Lin Xi took a deep breath and slowly placed the crystal ball into the groove of the altar.
As soon as the crystal ball made contact, the entire altar trembled violently. The ancient statues emitted a deep cracking sound, as if awakening from a long slumber. A blinding light erupted from the crystal ball, shooting up into the sky and tearing apart the night.
"Fall back!" Lin Xi shouted, and her teammates quickly distanced themselves while keeping a vigilant watch on the changes occurring at the altar.
In the center of the altar, a profound fissure gradually appeared, emanating a dark red glow. From within the crack came low, rumbling growls, reminiscent of some ancient creature's breath or perhaps roars from deep within hell.
"What is that?" Chen Rui held his breath, tightening his grip on his gun.
"It might be what guards this place," Lin Xi said coldly, raising her weapon. "Whatever it is, we must face it."
The light from within the fissure began to coalesce into a vague human shape.
It was a towering figure shrouded in thick mist, its features obscured. Its eyes glowed with a crimson light as if capable of piercing through souls.
A deep and hoarse voice emanated from the figure, seemingly piercing into each person's mind: "Why have you awakened me?"
"What are you?" Lin Xi asked cautiously, her voice tinged with both probing and wariness.
"I am the Gatekeeper," the figure replied slowly. "It is my duty to prevent any who seek to disrupt humanity's balance."
"We're not trying to disrupt any balance!" Lin Xi exclaimed loudly. "We are only seeking lost truths and trying to save our world!"
"Truth?" The figure's voice was low and mocking. "You humans have always believed that grasping truth would solve your problems; yet you have never realized that some truths will lead you toward destruction."
"We have no way out!" Lin Xi said defiantly. "If you are the Guardian, then tell us how we can change our fate!"
