In the dark hall, the humming of the black crystal ball grew increasingly intense, filling the air with a suffocating sense of pressure. The vibrations became more violent, and rocks began to crack overhead, with sand falling like rain.
"Leader Lin, this thing can't hold much longer!" Chen Rui exclaimed, waving his hand to shield himself from the falling debris, a hint of panic in his voice.
"Stay calm!" Lin Xi shouted as she focused intently on the crystal ball. At that moment, she could clearly feel a powerful energy surging from it, as if it were trying to consume everything.
"This isn't an ordinary device; it feels more like a mouth," Lin Xi murmured to herself.
"A mouth?" Wang Ya's eyes widened upon hearing this. "Leader Lin, are you saying it connects to another realm?"
Lin Xi nodded, pointing at the constantly changing runes on the surface of the crystal ball. "Look, these symbols are shifting into a flowing pattern. I've seen this phenomenon in ancient texts before. It signifies a passage."
"So the question now is whether we should go in," Zhou Zheng said, gripping his weapon tightly, his eyes filled with complex emotions.
"If we go in, it might be a one-way ticket; if we don't, we may never uncover the truth," Lin Xi took a deep breath and traced her finger over the Small Crystal Ball in her hand. "We cannot make a rash decision this time."
The vibrations did not cease; instead, they intensified. Just as everyone hesitated, the ground around the altar suddenly cracked open, and several black tentacles emerged from the fissures, lunging towards the team!
"Prepare for battle!" Lin Xi shouted, raising her gun and firing. The bullets struck the tentacles but felt like they were hitting rubber—completely ineffective.
"Switch to shotguns!" Chen Rui quickly changed weapons and used a powerful shotgun blast to repel one of the tentacles. "These things are vulnerable to impact!"
The number of tentacles continued to multiply, nearly surrounding the entire team.
"Leader Lin, this is bad! We need to make a decision!" Wang Ya shouted while dodging.
Lin Xi's expression darkened as she quickly assessed the situation. "Everyone fall back to the entrance! I'll draw their attention!"
"No way!" Zhou Zheng was the first to object. "It's too dangerous for you to stay here alone!"
"Follow my orders; this is a command!" Lin Xi's tone left no room for argument.
As the team was forced back towards the entrance, Lin Xi suddenly raised the Small Crystal Ball high above her head. She pinned her last hope on some connection between it and the black crystal ball.
"If you truly are a passage, then open up!" Lin Xi exerted all her strength and hurled the Small Crystal Ball towards the black crystal ball on the altar.
At the moment of impact, a blinding light erupted, causing the tentacles to recoil as if stung. The black crystal ball began to spin, its surface runes intertwining into a complex whirlpool pattern.
Lin Xi's eyes widened as she fixed her gaze on the center of the whirlpool.
Suddenly, a massive shadow emerged from within it, followed by a pair of crimson eyes that looked down upon Lin Xi as if she were nothing more than an insignificant ant.
"You have finally arrived," a deep and cold voice resonated from within the shadow, echoing in Lin Xi's mind.
"Who are you?" Lin Xi forced herself to suppress her inner fear and asked coldly.
I am the Abyssal Eye, and I am the truth you seek. The shadow slowly approached, its voice cold and unyielding. You want answers, and I can provide them. The price is your freedom.
What does that mean? Lin Xi furrowed her brow, glancing at her teammates behind her, signaling them to remain cautious.
By entering this passage, you will become a part of it. Your existence will forever serve the Abyss. The shadow's tone was merciless.
We do not accept such terms. Lin Xi replied firmly. If the truth requires sacrificing our freedom, then it is utterly meaningless!
It doesn't matter. The shadow let out a low laugh. You will change your mind.
As soon as the words left its lips, a black vortex began to expand rapidly, transforming the entire hall floor into an unfathomable void.
Retreat! Lin Xi commanded decisively, but the ground beneath her crumbled in an instant, and she and her teammates fell into the endless darkness.
A sudden wave of weightlessness hit her as the scenery around Lin Xi shifted continuously. In the darkness, countless points of light flickered, each resembling a fragment of memory.
She tried to grasp one of the light points, but it dissolved into nothingness.
Leader Lin! Can you hear me? Chen Rui's voice came through her earpiece, faint and distorted. Lin Xi immediately responded, I’m here! Is everyone alright?
Still alive! Zhou Zheng's voice chimed in, but we have no idea where we are now.
As gravity gradually returned, Lin Xi found herself lying on unfamiliar ground. She was in a ruin shrouded in thick fog, surrounded by collapsed buildings and withered trees, resembling an abandoned city.
This place... Lin Xi stood up and surveyed her surroundings. It seems we have arrived on the other side.
The other side? Wang Ya brushed off the dust from her clothes, shock evident in her eyes. Are you saying this is the other end of the Abyss Passage?
Perhaps. Lin Xi picked up a weapon from the ground, her gaze resolute. Since we are here now, we must find the truth and figure out how to return.
The image of the shadow's last pair of crimson eyes flashed before her mind—a strong warning and an intangible threat.
No matter what happens, we cannot be controlled by it. Lin Xi whispered to herself, gripping her weapon tightly as she prepared to face the challenges ahead.
To be continued...
