That day, Ling Yu arrived at the library as usual to read. He found a quiet corner to sit down, immersing himself in the world of books. Little did he know that Liu Jiang had also come to the library.
When Liu Jiang saw Ling Yu, a flicker of surprise and confusion crossed his eyes. He slowly walked over and sat down across from Ling Yu, silently observing him.
Ling Yu looked up and, upon seeing Liu Jiang, felt a wave of embarrassment and pressure wash over him. He didn’t know how to face Liu Jiang or what Liu Jiang would say to him. The two sat in silence, the atmosphere thick with awkwardness. Finally, Liu Jiang broke the silence and gently asked, "How is your sister, Ling Xue, doing lately? We had some misunderstandings because of Liu Ting, but I genuinely like your sister."
Ling Yu was momentarily taken aback; he hadn’t expected Liu Jiang to bring up Ling Xue. A complex mix of emotions surged within him. He pressed his lips together and replied as calmly as he could, "She’s fine, but we siblings don’t keep in touch much. If my sister doesn’t want you to disturb her, I hope you can respect her wishes." At that moment, Ling Yu felt a whirlwind of thoughts but didn’t know how to express them; he could only lower his head to avoid Liu Jiang’s probing gaze.
A hint of disappointment crossed Liu Jiang's face. He nodded gently and responded softly, "I understand. I will give her some space. I truly like your sister, and you know our Liu family’s status in Su City is only second to the Xing family. The relationship between you and my sister was meant to serve as a bridge for our families’ alliance with the Xing family. If you’re willing to help me pursue Ling Xue, I would consider seriously dating your sister, Liu Ting. I’ve also noticed that Xing might not be the ideal partner for her; perhaps we can support each other instead. My sister seems to have a good impression of you too. You could propose your conditions; regardless of the outcome, I will accept them. This is a substantial offer; how about it? My sincerity is quite genuine."
Ling Yu furrowed his brows as he looked at the bank card on the table, feeling torn inside. He knew that such a transaction was beneath his dignity but found it hard to refuse Liu Jiang. After all, he still had a strong admiration for Liu Jiang—handsome and charming—his fingers lightly tapping on the table as his gaze shifted between the bank card and Liu Jiang.
The amount was indeed considerable; for someone who used to have only a modest allowance each month like Liu Jiang, it was significant even though he came from a wealthy family and was currently just a student. Deep down, Ling Yu felt quite pleased that Liu Jiang was willing to make such sacrifices for him. However, he still couldn’t accept the money because doing so would make him feel belittled in front of Liu Jiang.
He spoke candidly: "I appreciate your proposal, but please take back this money. The possibility between me and Liu Ting is slim. While she may have feelings for me, I believe she has deeper feelings for Xing. Moreover, isn’t Xing also interested in my sister? If I pursue your sister further, wouldn’t that just add another rival for you? Besides, I cannot accept such a transaction; love cannot be measured by money. Liu Jiang, we are both adults and should understand that feelings are not a transaction. I respect your sincerity but even more so respect love itself. As for Ling Xue, she has the right to make her own choices; I cannot and will not interfere. If you truly like her, you should win her heart sincerely rather than through this means."
Ling Yu’s tone was firm and his gaze clear. After a moment of silence, Liu Jiang’s eyes reflected deep contemplation before he slowly nodded and took back the bank card. Looking at Ling Yu now held more respect.
"Ling Yu," he said, "I understand your position and respect your choice. I may have acted impulsively; perhaps it was due to my desire for my sister's happiness that led me to overlook some things. I will pursue Ling Xue in the right way; if she ultimately chooses Xing, I will have to accept it. Thank you for your honesty; you’ve made me realize that true feelings cannot be measured by money. I will remember this lesson." There was a hint of apology and maturity in Liu Jiang's tone as the atmosphere between them lightened considerably.
They continued their conversation for a while longer, shifting topics from relationships to academics and future plans. Ling Yu smiled and gently patted Liu Jiang on the shoulder. "That’s good; we’re still friends. The road ahead is long; who knows what might happen? Perhaps one day we’ll both find someone truly suitable for us." With that said, he stood up and left.
