Ling Xue lay on the hospital bed, the soft sunlight streaming through the window and casting a warm glow on her face, yet it could not dispel the unease in her heart. Ling Na had gone for her prenatal check-up; they could have gone together, but Ling Xue was in no condition to accompany her, so she had to let Ling Na go alone.
Watching Ling Na's retreating figure, Ling Xue silently prayed for her safety. She gently leaned back against the pillow, her thoughts drifting away. Reflecting on her recent experiences felt like reliving an absurd dream. From being forced into complex situations to lying in a hospital bed pregnant, it seemed as if fate was playing tricks on her.
She had no idea what awaited her; all she could do was take things one step at a time. Gradually, a wave of fatigue washed over Ling Xue, her eyelids growing heavier until she soon fell into a deep sleep.
In her dreams, she found herself in a tranquil world devoid of conflict and danger, filled only with warmth and peace. However, this tranquility was soon shattered.
A shadow quietly approached Ling Xue's bed like a ghost. The figure moved so silently that its footsteps were almost inaudible, yet it carried an aura that sent chills down her spine. The shadow stopped at Ling Xue's bedside, gazing at the sleeping woman with a glint of malice in its eyes.
Suddenly, the shadow reached out a hand and forcefully covered Ling Xue's head. She jolted awake in an instant, terror flooding her as she opened her eyes wide and struggled desperately. She wanted to scream but found her mouth tightly covered, unable to make a sound.
Fear surged within her like a tidal wave; she had no idea who this assailant was or why they were targeting her. Ling Xue fought with all her strength, but the assailant was far too strong for her to escape. Just as despair began to set in, something mysterious happened. A strange force enveloped Ling Xue, and she fell back into a state of apparent death.
Seeing Ling Xue suddenly go still, the assailant was startled, believing they had succeeded in their mission and prepared to flee quickly.
At that moment, the hospital security guards heard the commotion and rushed over. Spotting the assailant, they charged forward and subdued them without hesitation.
Before long, the police arrived as well, led by Xing Hong. Upon seeing that Ling Xue was pregnant and married, his expression turned to one of shock. He hadn’t expected that Liu Zong’s new wife would be her. A complex emotion flickered in Xing Hong’s eyes—jealousy mixed with envy and tinged with an indescribable sense of loss.
Ling Xue looked weakly at Xing Hong and said hoarsely, "Officer Xing, I never expected to see you here."
Xing Hong frowned slightly, concern etched across his face. "Why do you always find yourself in such dangerous situations? The last incident is still fresh in my mind."
He sighed softly before continuing, "This time I will handle it; I won’t let you suffer any harm again."
Ling Xue sighed lightly, a look of resignation in her eyes. "I don’t want this either, but things are always so complicated. It seems I’m perpetually caught up in troubles I can’t escape from."
Xing Hong spoke firmly, "Don’t worry; I will find out who is behind this and give you an explanation. No matter how difficult it may be, I will get to the bottom of it."
Ling Xue remained silent for a moment before nodding slightly. "I hope so. Right now, all I want is to safely deliver my baby without experiencing any more danger."
Xing Hong looked at Ling Xue with mixed feelings. He knew there was now a significant distance between them but couldn’t help but care for her. "Take care of yourself; don’t put yourself in danger again. Contact me if anything happens."
Ling Xue gazed at Xing Hong’s serious expression and felt a surge of gratitude within her. "Thank you, Officer Xing. Your concern warms my heart."
Xing Hong turned his head slightly embarrassedly. "It’s my duty. You should rest now."
