"Dead man, you’ve overwhelmed me," Ling Xue said, looking at Zhao Gang's wrinkled, greasy face with displeasure. Her tone unconsciously rose a few notches.
Zhao Gang seemed to be roused by Ling Xue's voice; his sleepy eyelids fluttered open slightly as he pulled her closer. Ling Xue felt half of her body being dragged towards him, his lower half pressing against her. He grinned and said, "Beautiful one, stay with me a while longer."
Ling Xue couldn't take it anymore and pushed him away. "If you want to sleep, then sleep by yourself." With that, she got up and looked at the mess of clothes strewn across the floor. Recalling the madness of the previous night, she clenched her fists in anger and struck Zhao Gang hard. Unfortunately, her slender frame was no match for his bulk; his corpulent body could easily engulf hers, and her strike caused him no harm.
Just as she was about to escape, Zhao Gang grabbed her arm and pulled her back toward his massive form.
Ling Xue picked up the clothes from the floor, and soon several maids approached with blank expressions to assist her—some helped her dress while others tidied up the room or brought water.
Ling Xue felt uncomfortable with their presence; it made her skin crawl. After a moment, a somewhat attractive woman appeared. Dressed in a colorful gauzy skirt that floated like clouds, she had a silk ribbon cinched at her waist that perfectly accentuated her slender figure. Her long hair was styled in a spiral adorned with pearl flowers. She approached the bed to straighten the covers when Zhao Gang suddenly yanked her into the sheets, predictably seeking to engage in intimate activities again.
The maid stood there silently, not daring to breathe, casting a glance at Ling Xue while blushing as Zhao Gang toyed with her.
Ling Xue had just begun to feel a flicker of goodwill towards Zhao Gang due to the maid's service, but it vanished in an instant. She lifted her skirt and walked out of the room.
Speaking of which, Zhao Gang's mansion was quite large. After walking for about an hour, Ling Xue finally reached the back garden. In her earlier fury, she hadn't bothered to ask for directions; turning around now, she noticed the two maids who had served her earlier were following closely behind with their heads bowed.
Ling Xue asked casually, "What are your names?"
"Replying to Madam, we do not have names; we are just newly arrived maids," they replied in unison, still devoid of any expression.
Ling Xue didn't notice why they lacked names.
"We are children of lowly servants from Qi Wang Fu who made mistakes. Someone sold us into Zhao Da Ren's household. The Zhao Mansion belongs to Lord Zhao Gang. The head maid occasionally oversees things but hasn't been around for two days now; hence we were never given names. Our mothers couldn't read or write either and thus had no names for us. Qi Wang Fu gave us names before we were sold, but those were given away afterward. If Madam does not mind, we would like to follow you and hope you can bestow names upon us," one of the more clever maids responded.
Ling Xue noticed that one maid had faint embroidery on her wrinkled dress while the other wore a green gauzy skirt that contrasted vividly against the red flowers in the garden. Feeling inspired, she declared, "From now on, you shall be called Xiu Er and you Cui Er. You are my people now; no longer will you be nameless." With that, Ling Xue smiled warmly—a warmth that both maids had never experienced since entering the mansion.
They silently rejoiced in having followed such a kind mistress.
"What is Qi Wang Fu?" Ling Xue asked casually.
The two maids exchanged surprised glances; Xiu Er hesitated slightly before softly answering, "Qi Wang Fu is one of the four great pillar states of Northern Jin Kingdom. My family has some connections with Zhao Mansion; if we trace it back far enough, the current Qi Wang Ye would still refer to Zhao Da Ren as 'uncle.'"
"Oh? So there’s such a relationship," Ling Xue remarked with interest.
Xiu Er and Cui Er exchanged looks of surprise; they hadn’t expected Ling Xue to take an interest in such trivial matters.
