Ling Xue, her belly swollen and her face filled with anger, walked heavily towards Zhao Gang's bedroom. As she pushed the door open, she intended to assert herself as the mistress: "Zhao Gang, how could you be so reckless! Look at the trouble you've caused!"
Zhao Gang, a massive figure, made Ling Xue appear like a small white rabbit. Hearing her words, he frowned, his expression darkening with annoyance as if he had been disturbed. "Hmph, what do you want now? I'm already troubled by that girl."
Ling Xue's chest heaved with rage. "You are incorrigibly debauched! And now you've caused a death—don't you feel any guilt? Those girls are human too; they have dignity and lives."
Zhao Gang scoffed dismissively. "The girls in this household are worthless; if one dies, what’s the big deal?"
Tears welled in Ling Xue's eyes as her voice trembled. "You are utterly unreasonable! If you continue like this, you will surely face retribution."
At that moment, a sharp pain shot through Ling Xue's abdomen, as if a giant hand was squeezing her tightly. Panic surged through her as she clutched her clothing. "Ah! I think I'm going into labor!"
In an instant, chaos erupted in the household. The maids rushed around in a flurry; some hurried to fetch hot water, spilling it along the way without a care, while others stumbled to find a midwife, shouting frantically. In the kitchen, steam billowed from a kettle on the stove. Several older women anxiously prepared birthing supplies in their rooms, their faces tense.
Zhao Gang was also thrown into a panic; his earlier irritation vanished, replaced by shock and worry. He shouted loudly, "Quick! Find a midwife! We must ensure both the lady and the child are safe. If anything goes wrong, I will hold you responsible!"
Time ticked by painfully slowly as Ling Xue's cries echoed from the room, tugging at everyone's hearts. Outside Zhao Gang's room, he paced back and forth, rubbing his hands together nervously as beads of sweat formed on his forehead.
After what felt like an eternity of tension and frantic activity, the baby was finally born. Upon hearing the loud cries of the infant, Zhao Gang's face lit up with surprise and seriousness. He could hardly contain his eagerness to see both the child and Ling Xue.
Peering carefully at the baby, Zhao Gang's eyes softened with tenderness. "This is my child! Hahaha!"
Ling Xue lay on the birthing bed, drenched in sweat with strands of hair clinging to her cheeks. Her complexion was pale as paper; her eyes were tightly shut, and her breathing was shallow and weak. After enduring such a long and painful labor, she felt herself slipping into a daze.
Pain and exhaustion washed over her like a tide; she felt lost in a haze where her consciousness flickered between clarity and confusion. She vaguely heard the shouts of those around her and the cries of her newborn but could not muster any further response.
Sweat dripped continuously from her forehead, soaking the bedding beneath her. Her lips were cracked and trembling slightly as if they were trying to convey the suffering she had endured. Her body felt utterly drained; every cell screamed with fatigue and pain.
In this foggy state, thoughts swirled chaotically in Ling Xue's mind. She recalled various experiences since arriving in this unfamiliar world, a wave of indescribable sorrow washing over her. She had once been filled with hope for the future, yearning for a stable life; yet reality proved so cruel. Zhao Gang’s notorious infidelity left her feeling hopeless; after enduring such a difficult delivery, she wondered how much longer she could hold on.
When she heard the faint cries of her child again, warmth surged within her heart. This little life was the most precious existence in this world to her. She silently vowed to protect this child and provide them with a warm home.
Even though the road ahead was fraught with difficulties and challenges, she could not give up. Ling Xue’s heart still longed for her hometown—the place filled with familiar faces and memories.
She did not know if she would ever have the chance to return there or see her loved ones again. Longing surged within her like a tidal wave, moistening her eyes with unshed tears.
