"Wait! Don't be impulsive! I'm with Tian Ye Gang. I'm here to discuss business with your wife. She was very hospitable and had a bit too much to drink with me. It has nothing to do with me; we are innocent."
I immediately introduced myself as a member of Tian Ye Gang, a group that most people wouldn't dare to provoke, including the man in front of me.
"What? Tian Ye Gang?"
The man paused for a moment, then continued to ask, "So you are Manager Wang?"
"No."
I shook my head. His question made it clear that he knew about his wife's affair with Wang Meng. He even addressed him respectfully as "you." This man was clearly a fool who had resigned himself to his fate.
"Then you must be Li Jian?"
The man pressed on. I couldn't help but laugh; it was evident that he was just digging his own grave.
"Neither. I'm a brother of Manager Wang. Since Li Jian has been dismissed, I'm currently sitting in his position."
I sighed helplessly, realizing my status had suddenly risen. It was obvious this man didn't dare offend someone from Tian Ye Gang. With this, I might still have a chance to get something out of this ledger!
"Oh, I see! So you're Manager Wang's brother. My apologies, my apologies! Please, go back to work!"
The man's demeanor changed instantly; he smiled broadly and instructed his employees to leave. I grinned at the turn of events. Despite the commotion, Xu Jiao in the other room remained silent—she must have drunk too much and fallen asleep.
Now that this man was so afraid of someone from Tian Ye Gang, it would be easy to dismiss him since he didn't even care about his wife being with one of us.
"Hey, brother! It's our first meeting, and we've already created so many misunderstandings. I'm really sorry about that! Actually, I'm quite familiar with Manager Wang; we’re practically family!"
The man closed the door and sat on the sofa with a smile. I took a seat in Xu Jiao's office chair, guessing he was curious about why I was there but didn’t ask.
As for his claim of being "family"? Ha! I remembered there’s a term for such relationships—like a twisted bridge between them and Wang Meng.
Since we were supposedly family, there was no need for pleasantries.
I smiled casually and said, "I've mentioned before that I look down on men who can give their women to others."
"Yes, haha! No need for formalities! By the way, I’m Li Hai; may I ask your name?"
"Xiang Dong," I replied with a smile.
"Li Hai" responded enthusiastically, "What a great name!"
I smirked inwardly; what was so great about it? It was just a direction.
As our conversation continued, I maintained an air of indifference. I wanted Li Hai to realize that I was unhappy with him interrupting me and hoped he would take the hint and leave.
However, Li Hai seemed oblivious to my discontent and kept chatting away as if we were old friends. He was determined to waste time with me.
I understood then that Li Hai actually didn't want me to have anything to do with Xu Jiao. Although he was polite and seemed to be supporting me, his presence was the best proof of that.
After all, no matter how you looked at it, she was his wife. I guessed that Li Hai wasn't too keen on Xu Jiao spending time with other men. I didn't hold much weight in this situation; after all, I had just mentioned that I was merely Wang Meng's brother. Xu Jiao was already involved with Wang Meng, so what did she need me for?
Just as I was contemplating what to do next, Xu Jiao's voice suddenly called out from the next room.
"Dong Ge! Dong Ge! What are you doing?"
I raised an eyebrow; she had woken up and noticed my absence. I glanced at Li Hai, who also looked a bit uneasy. He forced a smile and said, "I'll go check on her."
I nodded eagerly. "That’s great! I've been wanting you to leave!" I urged him to go.
Li Hai turned and left the office, and I quickly picked up the keys and opened the third drawer. Sure enough, there lay a green ledger!
I took the ledger, opened the window, and tossed it out. Then I locked all the drawers with the keys and tossed them aside.
Mission accomplished!
I let out a sigh of relief; now I had both ledgers in my hands! I had solid evidence of Liu Fei's fraudulent activities! His position would eventually be mine!
However, I couldn't just confront Liu Fei with the ledgers; that would be dangerous. He might resort to extreme measures to silence me, and what would be the point of blackmailing him? The most I could gain would be Wang Meng's position, which wasn't worth much.
What I wanted was the General Manager's position! Only by becoming General Manager at Tianchi could I truly enter Tian Ye Gang; everything else would be temporary.
Liu Fei didn't have the authority to appoint me as General Manager. I needed to find Liu Fei's superior. Before that, I needed to prepare myself. If I approached Liu Fei's superior with these ledgers, they certainly wouldn't spare Liu Fei but also wouldn't appoint me as General Manager.
How long had it been since I joined Tian Ye Gang? Just a few days? I needed Liu Fei's superior to see my value first! But how could I demonstrate that value now?
I wasn't in a hurry. Even if Xu Jiao discovered something and reported it to Wang Meng, Wang Meng wouldn't be able to do anything against me. With two ledgers in hand, I had Liu Fei cornered. Wang Meng would only fear that I'd expose the contents of those ledgers.
So, I could take my time finding ways to showcase my value or even discuss it with Linna. After all, she used to be a prominent figure in Tian Ye Gang; if she thought Wang Meng and Liu Fei were too low-level for her understanding, then she might know more about Liu Fei's superior.
"Li Hai, take good care of your wife; I'm leaving!"
I called out as I turned to exit the office. Li Hai heard me and hurried out to see me off without trying to keep me there. I knew he probably hoped I'd leave sooner rather than later.
After leaving the winery, I stealthily made my way to Xu Jiao's office window and retrieved the ledger. Flipping it open revealed it was filled with detailed sales records for alcoholic beverages. The large ledger even had a compartment containing numerous receipts—half of which were from Tianchi and bore its official stamp.
This was it! Solid evidence!
A smile crept onto my face as I closed the ledger and left the winery.
I didn't respond to Tianchi; I had already said that Tian was giving me time off, so I went home to discuss the upcoming situation with Linna. When I got home, Linna was taking a nap. I didn't wake her, choosing instead to wait alone in the living room. It wasn't until around two in the afternoon that Linna finally woke up.
"Hey? Why are you back?" Linna asked, her hair tousled and her eyes still hazy as she walked out of the bedroom. Despite her messy hair, she radiated a natural beauty.
"Take a look at this."
I didn’t answer Linna’s question directly but placed the ledger I had just stolen on the coffee table. After a few previous experiences, I felt it was better not to show off in front of Linna; it seemed too risky. It was better to keep things straightforward.
"A ledger? From the Winery?"
Linna's eyes widened as she took a look at the ledger, and suddenly she seemed much more alert. A bright smile spread across her face, as radiant as a blooming flower. Seeing her smile filled my heart with warmth; it felt like I had just tasted honey. I realized that my body was uncontrollably releasing hormones—I truly liked her. Her happiness brought me joy.
"That's great! With this ledger, you can become the general manager! Once you're the general manager, you'll have access to Tian Ye Gang's operations!"
Linna exclaimed excitedly. I had mentioned before that only by becoming the general manager could one engage with the serious underworld elements of Tian Ye Gang; people like Wang Meng were not even in consideration.
"Yes, but I'm still missing something. I can't use these two ledgers to blackmail Liu Fei; they’re merely leverage to get Liu Fei out of his position. If I want to become the general manager, I need to provide Liu Fei's superior with a solid reason."
I explained to Linna. Upon hearing this, she understood what I meant and responded with an "oh," then furrowed her brow in thought before surprisingly asking me back.
"What kind of reason do you need? Do you have any special skills?"
I was taken aback!
"Seriously?! What special skills do you think I have? They don’t even know me! Do you think they’ll believe me just because I say so? Didn’t you say back when you helped me get into Tian Ye Gang undercover that you understood them well enough to assist me? Now you can’t even handle such a simple matter?"
I asked incredulously. Linna coughed awkwardly after hearing my words, feeling somewhat embarrassed as her face flushed red. "Sorry, sorry! I just woke up and am still a bit dazed. Let me think about it some more."
Linna said cutely, making it hard for me to stay mad at her.
Liu Fei's superior was a legitimate figure in the underworld named Xiong Li. My impression of him was that he was quite cunning and greedy, often resorting to petty tricks. My father frequently scolded him but never dismissed him due to his long service.
"And then?"
I continued questioning as Linna provided an overview of Liu Fei's superior. However, what she said didn’t seem particularly helpful for my current situation. What I wanted to know was how to get Xiong Li to remove Liu Fei so that I could take over as general manager.
"Actually, after you told me about the fake liquor incident that day, I thought about it and realized that it might not have been Liu Fei who orchestrated it; it could very well have been Xiong Li himself since he has done similar things in the past."
"Go on."
I said to Linna, "So it seems we have a clue. You need to analyze this person a bit."
