No matter the situation, you’d better not show up; it could be a trap. Zheng Yu reminded me that Linna had previously warned me that Geng Kun might set a trap for me. But could Xiao Dao really do that? He seemed so honest and grateful to me. Plus, his grandmother is seriously ill, and he called me, likely about her condition.
“Hello?” I answered the phone. I felt that Xiao Dao wouldn’t betray me, but I also knew my instincts in this regard had never been reliable. I always thought my brothers wouldn’t sell me out because, deep down, I disliked the idea of being betrayed.
“Dong Ge, I need your help right now! A bunch of people are at my door demanding money! If I don’t give it to them, they’re causing a scene at the hospital and won’t let the doctors treat my grandmother!”
Xiao Dao’s words stunned me. A group of people causing a ruckus at the hospital? Could they be Geng Kun’s people?
“Why are they bothering you?” I asked him. He replied, “It’s because my uncle owed them money before he passed away. Since my uncle had no children, they’ve come to me for payment!”
I fell silent after hearing this; I had no way to discern the truth behind this situation.
“Did you mention Tian Ye Group?” I inquired. Xiao Dao quickly confirmed that he did mention it. He said he was now the Hall Manager at Tian Ye Group’s Tianchi branch and assured them that he would pay them back soon. However, they insisted that Xiao Dao was just making excuses and didn’t believe his claims about his identity.
“Alright, give me the address,” I sighed and asked for his location. After hanging up, just as I stood up, Zheng Yu spoke up.
“You can’t go; this could be a trap! You have to understand that Geng Kun might have bribed your friend to catch you off guard and harm you!”
Seeing my determination, Zheng Yu quickly added, “I’m serious!” I chuckled and replied, “You say it’s possible, but I can’t just ignore my brother in trouble because of a possibility. If he needs help, then I’ll go; I won’t just sit back!”
After saying this, I strode forward. What is loyalty? I didn’t know; all I knew was how others treated me was how I treated them in return! Xiao Dao is my brother; he once got severely injured for me and even tried to warn me about danger. Now that his grandmother is seriously ill and needs help, should I turn my back on him just because someone might be watching me? No way! I've never been one to hide away.
After leaving the office, I called Liu Sen to join me. Zheng Yu followed behind, making a phone call as we walked. I smiled; I knew Zheng Yu would arrange for someone to ensure my safety.
“There’s something I know saying won’t help much, but let me remind you: this situation isn’t something only you can handle,” Zheng Yu said after finishing his call. I smiled but didn’t respond; of course, I knew Zheng Yu could step in if needed, but that wasn’t how things should be done.
It wasn’t about needing my brothers to be present for appearances’ sake; it was about needing to investigate the truth myself. If Xiao Dao really had been bribed by Geng Kun to harm me, it was better to discover this sooner rather than later.
If today passed without resolution, then the answer would remain hidden. Now that Xiao Dao was the Hall Manager at Tianchi, how would our relationship work moving forward? Should I trust him or remain cautious?
If I chose to trust him or if my caution wasn’t enough, Xiao Dao could still find ways to harm me in the future while working at Tianchi—making it even harder to guard against! It would be better for me to prepare and investigate today! Whatever needed helping or handling would be addressed!
Liu Sen, Zheng Yu, and I drove towards the hospital where Xiao Dao’s grandmother was staying. Zheng Yu had already arranged for security near the hospital; how many people he called or how he set up defenses wasn’t something I questioned—Zheng Yu seemed like a reliable person who got things done properly.
Once we arrived at the hospital, I led Liu Sen and Zheng Yu inside and found Xiao Dao. As the saying goes: one should never harbor ill intentions towards others but should always be cautious of others’ intentions. Liu Sen and Zheng Yu stayed close by my side, ensuring no one approached me—including Xiao Dao.
“Dong Ge! You’re here! Sorry for bothering you again.”
At the entrance of the hospital room, Xiao Dao wore an expression of frustration, while a few ruffians stood nearby, smirking slightly. Among the three of us, only Zheng Yu was somewhat familiar in these circles, but they didn’t recognize him.
That’s fine.
I smiled at Xiao Dao and said, given the current situation, it seemed like everything was indeed real.
"Which gang are you with?" Zheng Yu asked the group of Little Rascals with a hint of arrogance. They chuckled lightly in response. "Hey! Big brother, what does it matter which gang? It's only right to pay back debts. We have our reasons wherever we go. Look at this—this is an IOU. With interest, it’s over three hundred thousand now. If he doesn’t pay up, he’ll be in deep trouble."
One of the Little Rascals pulled out an IOU. Zheng Yu took it, glanced at it, nodded, and then pulled out his wallet to retrieve a special business card from Tian Ye Group.
"Do you recognize this?"
"Oh my God, Tian Ye Group? Is it really Tian Ye Group?" The Little Rascals were momentarily stunned after seeing the card. Zheng Yu slipped the card into one of their pockets and said coolly, "I know you’re just a runner. Take this card to your boss and let him discuss this matter with me. You might not believe my identity, but you’d better call your boss to check on the rules of Tian Ye Group."
With a cold smile playing on his lips, Zheng Yu patted the shoulder of one of the Little Rascals and added, "I’ve had the fortune to witness Tian Ye Group's rules once—offending them means breaking your legs!"
The Little Rascals were taken aback. They could find Xiao Dao to collect debts; naturally, they could gather information about him as well. I had just appointed Xiao Dao as Hall Manager yesterday, so it was understandable that they wouldn’t believe he was a Hall Manager.
But Zheng Yu’s business card was genuine; who in Kyoto would dare counterfeit a Tian Ye Group card? It would be suicidal.
"Alright, alright, big brother. I’ll relay this to our boss," one of the Little Rascals quickly conceded.
Zheng Yu smiled and said nothing more, waving his hand for them to leave. This might have been a significant issue for Xiao Dao, but for Zheng Yu, it was merely child’s play.
"Thank you, Dong Ge! Thank you, big brother!" Xiao Dao expressed his gratitude to both me and Zheng Yu repeatedly. I chuckled and patted his shoulder. "We’re all brothers; no need for thanks."
Zheng Yu also smiled at Xiao Dao. I noticed a look of gratitude in Xiao Dao's eyes directed at Zheng Yu, but there was also a hint of envy—quite normal. Those without power often envy those who do. After all, as mentioned earlier, while Xiao Dao struggled to resolve issues through sheer effort, Zheng Yu could settle them with just a few words; that gap was precisely about power!
Then I asked Xiao Dao, "Is there no one else?"
"There’s no one else; they’re gone," he replied quickly. I smiled and followed him into the hospital room to check on his grandmother. She had heard that I came to help solve her problems and kept thanking me profusely.
Looking at Xiao Dao's grandmother reminded me of my own—she was also kind and good to me but had passed away long ago.
"Take good care of your grandmother; I have things to attend to," I said with a smile. Xiao Dao nodded in agreement and saw me along with Zheng Yu and Liu Sen out of the hospital.
"I really admire you; you can be such a good brother," Zheng Yu said cheerfully once we were outside. I laughed in response and thought to myself: Of course! What nonsense! Liu Sen chimed in next to us, starting to boast about how he used to hang out with me and how loyal I was to my brothers. I remained silent but maintained a nonchalant expression that signaled my agreement!
The three of us had just gotten into the car, intending to head to Tianchi, when suddenly I received a phone call.
It was Xi Xiang calling!
I froze for a moment. Damn, I was just about to remind my friends, but I got delayed because of the situation with Xiao Dao! Could it be that Xi Xiang had gotten caught up in something?
“Hello?”
I answered the phone, feeling a bit anxious. I didn’t want my personal issues to drag anyone else down; that would make me feel guilty and uncomfortable.
“Xiang Dong?”
A strange man’s voice came through the line!
What the hell! Xi Xiang really did get into trouble!
“Where are my friends? What do you want? Just say it.”
I spoke coldly to the stranger on the other end. My tone immediately alerted Zheng Yu and Liu Sen, who exchanged worried glances.
“Your friends are with me. I mean no harm; I’m just doing someone a favor. I’d like you to come meet me.”
The man’s voice was calm and icy, and my response was even colder.
“You’re doing someone a favor? How much did they pay you? Tell me, and I’ll double it.”
“The location is Chengnan Chemical Plant. Just you, within two hours.”
Beep beep.
Damn it!
The caller hung up, and I cursed under my breath. Zheng Yu quickly asked, “What happened? Are you alone?”
“Yeah.”
I replied curtly. This was serious; Geng Kun had hired someone to kill me!
“Do you think suggesting something will help?” Zheng Yu looked at me questioningly.
“It won’t help!”
I answered without hesitation. I knew that Zheng Yu might think I was being foolish; after all, in this line of work, one had to be ruthless. But I couldn’t do that!
I wasn’t cut out for this life of crime! I had to live with my conscience! If my friends died because of my issues, I would feel guilty for the rest of my life. I wouldn’t allow that to happen!
