"Damn it! You traitor!"
Wan Fei stormed into the room and landed a hard punch on Zheng Yu. "How dare you show your face here? You're the one who betrayed us!"
Fuming, Wan Fei was ready to strike Zheng Yu again, but he was quickly blocked by Zheng Yu's sixteen underlings.
"Dong Ge, aren't you going to say something?"
Zheng Yu wiped the corner of his mouth and glanced at me. I looked at Zheng Yu, then at the small knife in my hand, and said nothing.
"What the hell! What can I say? It's you! You sold us out! How close were we to death this time? Look at what they did to Dong Ge! Damn it! If you dare come back here, I'll kill you!"
Wan Fei shouted angrily. I thought to myself, "You can shout all you want! Why drag me into this? Do I look ridiculous?"
"Fei Ge! Don't be impulsive; it can't possibly be Yu Ge!"
Zheng Yu's underlings were tense, trying to restrain Wan Fei. I scanned their expressions—each one was filled with anxiety and urgency, which was understandable.
Then I looked at the small knife; it too wore a worried expression.
"Stop! I don't have solid evidence yet; let's discuss this later."
I spoke up, and Wan Fei immediately turned his attention away from Zheng Yu and looked at me instead.
"Dong Ge, how can we let this slide? He's a traitor! He's an undercover agent! He wants us all dead!"
Wan Fei insisted, but I shot him a glare.
Though Wan Fei often joked around with me, he was also quite intimidated by me. The moment I glared at him, he fell silent.
"Fei Ge, this has nothing to do with Yu Ge."
Wan Fei stopped arguing. Zheng Yu's men released him and reiterated their stance. Wan Fei huffed but said nothing more; it was clear he had already made up his mind that Zheng Yu was responsible.
"Tell me what happened. I have an idea of what's going on; you don't need to get involved."
I told Wan Fei. Although I had started to believe Zheng Yu, he still remained suspicious in my eyes. However, I didn't want to discuss this matter in front of everyone—I wanted the real traitor to feel uneasy and anxious.
Wan Fei sighed in resignation and recounted the events: they had stolen the template smoothly and managed to get away on the first day after scouting the area.
They returned to Kyoto only to be captured as soon as they got off the bus; naturally, the template had already been taken by someone else.
This account didn't help me with my subsequent deductions at all.
"Alright, I understand now. Everyone go rest; I'll figure out who the traitor is."
I addressed everyone. Wan Fei asked me what had just happened, but I didn’t tell him—what good would it do? I told him to go home.
After everyone left, I was alone in the office. Ten minutes later, Zheng Yu returned.
"Dong Ge, do you have a clue now?"
"No."
I shook my head. I had anticipated Zheng Yu's return; earlier, I had deliberately refrained from defending him to keep the traitor confused—Zheng Yu could see that much.
"Perhaps you suspect something but don’t want to believe it?"
I looked at Zheng Yu, who asked me a question. I fell silent for a moment before replying, "This matter involves too many people. Even if I trust you, I can't trust your sixteen subordinates. I don't want to wrong anyone."
I understood that I was indifferent; time would reveal the truth. But could you tell me how you managed to escape?
Zheng Yu inquired, and I smiled. There was no need for concealment; I simply said, "Chen Ming had me kill Ning Chuan."
Zheng Yu nodded after hearing this and said, "Regarding this matter, I will show you my worth. I have news to discuss with you."
"Sure," I nodded. I understood what Zheng Yu meant: he would help me deal with Ning Chuan, and with his backing, things would certainly be easier.
After finishing his statement, Zheng Yu left. I changed into a clean outfit in my office and drove home. Linna had already returned before me. When she saw me bandaged up like an Indian A San, she immediately burst into tears. She turned away, covering her mouth; I knew she was worried.
"Come on, stop crying! This look is quite festive!"
I chuckled as I sat down on the sofa. When dealing with women, whether they were angry or upset about something else, as long as you could make them laugh, you had won.
"Festive my foot! Your family is in shambles, and you call this festive?"
Linna turned around and shot me a glare. Her beautiful, narrow eyes were slightly red; it was truly a sight that tugged at my heartstrings.
"You’re such a good girl; why do you always learn these phrases from my mom? Come on now, let's not imitate her. It's not nice to curse at people. Come here, let your husband give you a hug."
I stretched out my arms to comfort Linna. I often spoke with my mom on the phone; she had many affectionate nicknames for me like 'little rascal' or 'little turtle.' She also had some catchphrases, one of which was "your foot!"
"Who wants your hug? You’re such a mess! What’s going on? Hurry up and tell me; I've been worried all day!"
Linna shot me an annoyed glance, but I noticed the hint of a smile at the corner of her mouth. Why do people say that women like bad men? Sometimes, if you don't act like a rogue with women, it really doesn't work.
I then recounted the events of the day to Linna. By now, everything had settled down, so there was nothing for her to worry about anymore. She listened quietly until I finished speaking. But just as I wrapped up my story, that stubborn girl turned against me.
"Are you out of your mind? It’s all exposed now! You just went ahead and did that? Are you trying to get yourself killed?"
Linna was furious while I wore an innocent expression.
"What was I supposed to do? If I didn’t act, my brothers would be doomed! If I didn’t say anything, they would definitely come after me! At that point, you might not be able to escape either!"
I said calmly; that was simply the reality—I had no other choice!
"Couldn’t you have discussed it with me first? This is so dangerous! You clearly walked into a trap without even telling me?"
Linna was genuinely upset—very upset—but I felt equally innocent.
"What good would it do if I told you? You’d only worry."
I replied, "Some things can’t just be avoided because they seem dangerous!"
"Are you arguing with me?"
Linna glared at me again; her narrow eyes shimmered with tears. I knew she was scared now; this statement meant she was about to enter her unreasonable mode.
"No arguing here! I'm just saying there’s nothing we can do about it. Alright then, no more fighting; it’s all over now. Look, I'm back alive!"
I hugged Linna tightly, but she pushed me away in her anger! She shoved against my chest, and suddenly a bad feeling washed over me.
"You...you still have injuries?"
Linna looked at my shirt gradually soaked in blood with surprise. I quickly waved my hand dismissively and said, "It's nothing—a small injury."
I smiled and recounted the time I was scolded by Linna after getting beaten up. I didn’t want her to see my injuries; I didn’t want her to worry, and I wanted to maintain my dignity in front of her, even if it seemed a bit ridiculous.
“A small injury?”
Linna shot me a glare before turning away to take a deep breath. When she turned back, the tears in her eyes had vanished. Linna was a strong-willed girl, and today’s incident had been too overwhelming, too frightening. I had been at the gates of hell, after all. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have shed a tear.
“Let me see!”
Linna’s expression changed as she spoke to me with an authoritative tone, serious enough to make me feel like I was in trouble. Surely, she wouldn’t lecture me again just because I got beaten up?
“It’s nothing; just some minor injuries. I’ll be fine in a couple of days.”
I laughed nervously and clapped my hands. If Linna demanded that I retaliate tenfold, I wouldn’t be able to manage that in such a short time! Did that mean every meal from now on would either be completely bland or overly salted? That thought made my heart ache.
“Show me!”
Linna insisted, her eyes red and wearing an expression that screamed ‘spoiled princess.’
“Please don’t bully a good man, alright? I have my own dignity,” I said cautiously, aware that Linna could easily resort to stripping me if she felt provoked.
“Damn it! Xiang Dong, this isn’t the first time we’ve talked about this!”
Linna was relentless now, her demeanor turning domineering and fierce. “Damn it!”
Under her pressure, I reluctantly gave in. Seeing Linna’s determination made it clear that she wouldn’t let this go until she had a look.
“Fine then, let’s give you a glimpse of my impressive physique.”
As I spoke, I began unbuttoning my shirt one by one. Linna scoffed at me with disdain; truthfully, my body wasn’t bad at all!
However, as each button came undone and revealed the bandages wrapped around my torso like a corset, Linna’s expression shifted from disdain to concern. Was she feeling sorry for me?
“Doesn’t that hurt?”
Linna asked softly as she looked down at my chest. Thankfully, instead of immediately exploding with anger about why I had let myself get beaten so badly, she showed concern.
“It’s not too bad. I told the nurse that the small wounds didn’t need so much wrapping. She thought I was talking too much.”
I chuckled, and Linna smiled back at me. “You do talk too much!”
“I only talk so much to make you happy! It’s nothing; these little injuries don’t mean much to me. Come here, sweetheart; give me a hug.”
I said to Linna, who was still looking down. Unconsciously, my voice turned a bit hoarse. I knew she was trying to hide her tears from me because she felt sorry for me. It was strange; while she was worried about me, I felt sorry for her instead. All I wanted was to keep her smiling every day without worries.
