"What’s going on? You still haven’t told me why your brother was framed," Lu Ying called out to me, catching me off guard.
"Do I really need to tell you?" I replied, puzzled. The situation with Jinshan Jiao was dangerous, and telling Lu Ying would only lead to her trying to dissuade me. I had made my decision, and it wouldn’t change. What more could I say?
"Need to? Didn’t you say we’re still friends when we meet again? As friends, shouldn’t I care about you?"
"Shouldn’t? You don’t have any stake in this," I shook my head calmly. The truth was that sharing this with her would only make her worry, and I didn’t want Lu Ying to be concerned for me; I couldn’t bear that.
"Xiang Dong, is this how you treat your friends? What you just said really hurts," Lu Ying frowned at me, genuine sadness reflecting in her eyes. Hearing that made me chuckle.
"Come on, are you really upset? I’ve said so much for you! When I heard you were kidnapped, I nearly lost my mind trying to save you!"
I said helplessly. The incident had been so sudden that I hadn’t been able to think straight. Otherwise, how could I have fallen into their trap?
Upon hearing my words, Lu Ying couldn’t help but laugh, giving me a sideways glance as she said, "You’re such a rogue. You talk nonsense and make it hard for me to stay mad at you."
"Then don’t be mad! Who’s forcing you to be angry?" I replied, exasperated.
"Alright, I won’t be mad," Lu Ying smiled.
"Good, that’s a good child." I grinned back. "A good child wouldn’t cause trouble for adults."
"But as a friend, don’t you plan to treat me to a meal now that we’ve met again?" Lu Ying asked with a smile. I knew that if I said no, she wouldn’t hesitate to turn on me!
What could I say?
"My honor," I replied with a smile. Lu Ying nodded in satisfaction and walked out of the company with me. As soon as we stepped outside, she naturally linked her arm with mine just like when she pretended to be my girlfriend before. Instinctively, I wanted to refuse her, but I had already turned her down too many times. This wasn’t a matter of principle; it was just a small concession.
I drove Lu Ying to an upscale Western restaurant. While we were ordering food, I asked her where she had been over the past month and a half. She told me she had visited many places, mostly orphanages.
The ten million I had given her was now down to half; Lu Ying had donated half of it and planned to continue doing so.
We talked about many things during our meal—she shared stories about the adorable children she met during her donation trips and how much fun they had together. I knew Lu Ying was helping them and that made her happy.
Our meal lasted about an hour.
After finishing our dinner, we stepped out of the restaurant together.
"Are you leaving?" Lu Ying looked at me with a hint of nonchalance in her eyes, but I knew it was just a facade to hide her reluctance.
"Yeah, let me take you home," I said with a smile. "At times like this, I can’t help but blame my mom for making me so handsome; it must be causing innocent Lu Ying some trouble!"
"No need! I'll take a taxi myself. You should head back quickly; if you're late, your wife will scold you!" Lu Ying laughed.
Hearing that made me sigh helplessly. Damn it! Not having explained things clearly to Linna would definitely worry her; returning home meant certain scolding for me.
"Be careful and protect yourself. If anything feels off, call me immediately," I said to Lu Ying. This incident served as a wake-up call for us. Many people knew about my rescue of Lu Ying, and although we had quietly separated, most were still unaware and continued to keep an eye on her.
"Don't worry, do you forget who I am? Goodbye." Lu Ying smiled and waved as she turned to leave. I chuckled; although she was a police officer, she was still a woman. Tomorrow, I had to ask Zheng Yu to send a few people to protect her.
After Lu Ying left, I headed home, feeling increasingly anxious along the way. I knew Linna would undoubtedly question me and would likely confront me about it. I was trying to think of a response and some excuses.
But when I reached my doorstep, I found myself at a loss. Linna was far too clever; I really didn’t have the courage to deceive her in person. Never mind, I would just have to adapt.
I opened the door and stepped inside, only to discover that Linna wasn't home! What was going on?
I sat down on the sofa, knowing that Linna was usually a homebody and rarely left the house under normal circumstances. Just as I settled in, I noticed an envelope on the coffee table in front of me.
I opened it and was immediately taken aback!
"Xiang Dong, I've actually known for a while that you were with a beautiful girl. When I returned and saw you behaving well again, I thought it was just a moment of confusion on your part, so I convinced myself not to hold it against you. But today’s events proved me wrong. I've thought about how hard it is for me to let go of you, but I can't keep grinding sand into my eyes anymore. I'm done trying to get revenge on you; thank you for taking care of me all this time."
What the hell!
I dropped the letter and rushed outside! Where had Linna gone?
She had discovered what happened between Lu Ying and me!
I had sensed that Linna's torment over the past few days was not simple!
I had naively thought she was unaware of the situation; I foolishly believed I could pull off this deception!
I really was an idiot!
"Zheng Yu! Linna is missing—send trusted brothers to find her immediately!"
I dialed Zheng Yu's number, and he sounded shocked upon hearing my words.
"What? Your sister-in-law is missing?"
"Yes! It’s been about an hour since she disappeared. The Tian Ye Gang's forces searching for Linna isn't appropriate; you need to have your police contacts look for her right away!"
I said urgently; having the police search for Linna would put my mind at ease.
"Got it! I'll arrange it right away." Zheng Yu said before hanging up. I stood at the street corner, holding my phone in a daze.
Now I truly felt foolish.
Perhaps from the very beginning, I shouldn't have kept things from Linna. Even if she was petty or jealous or would try to obstruct things, I shouldn’t have hidden it from her. If I hadn’t, she wouldn’t have made the decision to leave me like this.
At that moment, I could fully understand why Linna returned to Kyoto and tormented me for that week; she must have felt even worse than I did. Linna was an incredibly proud girl who couldn’t tolerate any sand in her eyes, yet for my sake, she tried to grind that sand down.
She succeeded.
She deceived me by saying it was just a test for me; she didn’t want to bring this issue up because for someone as proud as Linna, once it was brought up, she wouldn’t forgive me. She chose to bear the pain of this misunderstanding alone.
She even warned me that people in love often lose their intelligence; today, I truly experienced that firsthand. It was as if I hadn’t heard anything at all and naively thought everything had blown over. Until today, Linna might have followed me and discovered that I had been dining with Lu Ying again—her heart had been wounded once more, leading her to decide to leave me.
I leaned against the streetlight, holding the letter that Linna had left me, and let out a long sigh. At that moment, I felt an overwhelming sense of loss. Had I just experienced a breakup? Was I going to lose Linna? Did I still have a chance to explain this misunderstanding to her? Would she ever forgive me?
I didn’t know. I didn’t know any of it.
All I wanted was to squat down for a while, just to gather my thoughts.
“Dong Ge!”
A car pulled up in front of me, and Zheng Yu got out. I looked up at him.
“Did you find her?”
“It’s not that easy,” he said, his face filled with concern. I understood; if Linna wanted to avoid me, she would definitely make it hard for me to find her.
“Go help me look for her, will you? I’m feeling a bit tired. I need to rest for a moment,” I replied, lowering my head.
“Zheng, I’m really exhausted. I’ve put my heart and soul into everything for Linna, but one careless mistake ended up hurting her.”
I felt guilty. Why was I so foolish? Why hadn’t I realized that Linna wasn’t testing me but was genuinely angry? If only I had known a little earlier, I could have talked things out with her sooner. Sure, she might have gotten upset and thrown a fit, but it wouldn’t have ended with her leaving me like this.
Zheng Yu noticed the letter in my hand and snatched it away to take a quick look.
“Dong Ge! Don’t do this!” he shouted.
I looked up at him. “What am I doing?”
“Don’t be so downcast! Yes, it’s tough right now, but your career can’t stop! You still have so many brothers relying on you!” Zheng Yu urged.
I forced a smile.
“Downcast? I just got dumped! Is it illegal for me to feel this way? You want to arrest me?” I shouted angrily. At that moment, I couldn’t help but feel some resentment toward Zheng Yu; it was his idea that had led to this mess in the first place! He had even encouraged me not to tell Linna anything.
I knew he was worried about Linna interfering, about her affecting our plans, and most of all, he feared that without my determination and capability, the vast Tian Ye Gang would crumble.
