The next day, Du Tao called me to say that we could start. Start what, you ask? It was nothing more than to persuade the Helmsmen to rebel together.
After receiving the instructions, I took immediate action. After all, Yue Qing was watching me closely. Every day, she reported my situation to Du Tao, so I had to appear proactive to avoid raising any suspicions.
I first dialed the number of Helmsman Old Wang, known for his distinctive ringtone.
Beep beep. No one answered.
Next, I tried Liu, but again, no one picked up.
It seemed that Du Zong's plan was a bit too bold. I sighed and turned to Yue Qing beside me. "Just because I was taken by the Enforcement Hall, these guys are too scared to answer my calls."
"I know you'll find a way," Yue Qing said nonchalantly. I smiled at her response; of course, I would find a way.
Since I couldn't get through by phone, I decided to take action. The closest person was Old Wang, whose real name was Wang Tianhai. He had recently gained a popular nickname—Hui Wang—because he loved to brag.
Hui Wang had previously been the most enthusiastic towards me, patting my chest and saying, "Brother, if anything comes up in the future, just give Brother Wang a call! No problem at all!"
But now that trouble had arisen, he had quickly gone missing!
No matter; you can run from the monk but not from the temple. I booked a flight for that evening and decided to pay my Brother Wang a personal visit!
The next day, Wan Fei stayed back at the He Bei Province Headquarters while I took Liu Sen and my shadow Yue Qing with me to He Bei without bringing any underlings. However, Liu Sen always had a group of elite subordinates trained by him secretly following wherever he went for emergencies.
Upon arriving in Anhui Province where Old Wang was located, I dialed his number again. This time someone answered—a woman's voice.
"Hello, who is this?"
Her voice was quite pleasant.
"I'm Xiang Dong; I'm looking for Hui Wang."
"I'll take this call."
"Hui Wang? Who are you? Do you know whose phone you're calling?"
The secretary immediately became defensive.
The name Hui Wang didn't sound very reassuring; Old Wang wouldn't allow anyone who wasn't a friend to get close. This was clearly an attempt by his secretary to distance herself from me.
There had indeed been precedents recently; after Qu Gui killed Qian Cun Jin and captured two Helmsmen who were then eliminated, the third Helmsman fell under scrutiny because he was too close with the second one—they partnered in many businesses together.
So today, someone answering the phone was meant to create distance between us.
"Isn't this Hui Wang? My apologies; I must have dialed the wrong number."
I chuckled and hung up. Even if I asked this woman where Hui Wang was now, she wouldn’t tell me anything useful. There was no need for further conversation.
After hanging up, I called Qu Gui. With many subordinates in the Enforcement Hall observing every high-ranking member of Tian Ye Group from the shadows, he surely knew where Hui Wang was hiding.
"He’s at Lin Yue Hotel! In a room," Qu Gui quickly informed me. I smiled upon hearing this and hailed a cab, heading towards Lin Yue Hotel with Yue Qing and Liu Sen.
Upon arriving at Lin Yue Hotel, we made our way inside and headed for the third floor. As we reached the third floor and looked around, we spotted two bodyguards in black standing at the entrance of a room.
Without a doubt, that was it.
"What are you doing? Get lost!"
The two bodyguards shouted at me as I approached them.
Smack! Smack!
I didn’t hold back and slapped each of them across the face. One of the bodyguards stumbled back, ready to retaliate against me. But standing beside me were Yue Qing and Liu Sen. Did they really think they could hit me? Before they could even make a move, both were knocked out cold by a punch from Yue Qing and Liu Sen.
"Who the hell are you?!"
A voice echoed from the room—it was Hui Wang.
Bang!
I kicked the door open with force, revealing two naked bodies sprawled on the bed.
"Ah!"
A piercing scream escaped from the woman’s lips. From her tone, I recognized her as the one who had just answered my call.
"Xiang Dong! What the hell are you doing?!" Hui Wang exclaimed, his face filled with terror. He must have been shocked to see me here.
"What am I doing? I just missed you, Brother Wang, so I came to check on you."
I entered the room with a smile, followed closely by Liu Sen and Yue Qing. The woman with Hui Wang scrambled to hide behind the bed; she knew who we were and probably feared for her life.
"Why didn’t you call me when you thought of me? You could have at least let me know you were coming," Hui Wang said nervously.
He was afraid of me because I had a notorious reputation in Kyoto—Xiang Fengzi.
I chuckled. "Didn’t I try calling you? You just didn’t pick up!"
But that was beside the point.
"Brother Wang, let’s skip the small talk. Before we get into serious matters, can you cover yourself up a bit? We have a lady present."
I casually sat down on the sofa while Hui Wang stood there in a daze, likely forgetting that he was completely naked.
And today, I spoke a harsh truth—it really was a small bird!
It was laughable; last time Hui Wang bragged about how he could handle three at once and still ask for mercy! Looking at him now, it seemed like he needed to test his partner's skills under pressure.
After hearing this, Hui Wang quickly pulled up the blanket to cover himself and then forced out a couple of nervous laughs before asking, "Hey, Xiang Dong, what exactly is going on? If there's something you need, just say it. I’ll help however I can."
I smiled and nodded; there was nothing to hide anymore.
"I’m planning to defect from Tian Ye Group and leave Qing Gang to join Hongmen. I hope you’ll come with me, Brother Wang."
"What?!"
Hui Wang jumped up from the bed with a start, his face a mix of surprise and fear as if he had seen a ghost. Indeed, everyone could see how Tian Ye Group dealt with traitors; one after another, they had met their end. Who would dare to call themselves a traitor now?
He must think I’ve lost my mind, probably believing that the nickname "Xiang Fengzi" truly suits me.
Not understanding? I glanced at Hui Wang's nervous demeanor and then shot a look at Yue Qing, who wore a calm expression tinged with disdain, which was rather amusing.
"Brother Xiang Dong, are you joking? How about I pretend I didn’t hear anything you said today? By the way, I recently bought a brand new Lamborghini! It’s perfect for someone your age! A limited edition beauty! How about I give it to you?"
Hui Wang looked tense as he replied to me, his expression somewhat annoying.
In truth, which of the remaining Helmsmen from the Old Forces wasn’t just a fence-sitter? Those few with backbone and blood had already been eliminated when Du Tao took over Tian Ye Group.
“Brother Wang, you’re joking. I like the car, but do you think what I’ve said can just be ignored?”
I shot Hui Wang a cold glance. Sometimes, when people played too many tricks, I preferred to be straightforward. For someone like Hui Wang, who was sharp as a tack, trying to fool him was impossible. The only simple and effective method was to grasp his lifeline; then he would naturally listen to everything you said.
Once Hui Wang understood my words, he realized I was forcing him to make a choice! Did he have the guts to oppose Qing Gang? Compared to that, he had even more courage to stand against me!
“Xiang Fengzi! Damn it, you must be crazy! What are you saying? I, Old Wang, am loyal enough; if I pretend I didn’t hear what you said, then I’m not loyal at all! I could report you right now! You should know where you are; you’re in my territory!”
Hui Wang pointed at me defiantly. At that moment, he wasn’t afraid of me; he had merely made a decision based on the lesser of two evils.
But who told him that my threat was any less severe?
“Cut him off.”
I said calmly from the sofa. Yue Qing’s expression changed immediately as she shot me an incredulous look. Liu Sen showed no hesitation; he charged forward and pinned Hui Wang down!
He pulled out a knife and prepared to carry out my order!
