With our covert assistance, Xiang Nanyuan quickly located Han Chuan. During the time Xiang Nanyuan was searching for Han Chuan, both North Hongmen and Lu Xian approached me multiple times, attempting to persuade me to join Lu Xian and assist them in their endeavors with North Hongmen. I rejected all their offers. When Xiang Nanyuan called me, I was in the Enforcement Hall office in Kyoto, listening to Lu Xian vent his frustrations.
"Lu Yan! What the hell do you mean by this? Do you really think you're Lu Fei? Let me tell you, even if Nan Hongmen came to you, they wouldn't truly regard you as Lu Fei. They all know that Dad would never allow a bastard like you to take the helm of Qing Gang! The only reason Nan Hongmen is looking for you is to have you help them harm me! I'm your damn biological brother!" Lu Xian shouted at me angrily. This was indeed true, given the choices available to Lu Ding Tian.
"Brother, stop saying so much. Some things aren't up to me. Why don't you ask the old man if this is what he wants?" I replied with a smile, which only fueled his anger further.
"Don't use the old man to pressure me! He has his own thoughts. While he can temporarily ensure the stability of Qing Gang, what about in the future? Ensuring Qing Gang's stability will still fall on my shoulders! So when I do things, the old man has never interfered. Do you understand?" Lu Xian grabbed my collar and said furiously. I could smell a hint of sandalwood on him; it was quite an expensive scent.
I understood what he meant; Lu Ding Tian knew that his approach could only guarantee temporary stability. Whether helping Nan Hongmen against North Hongmen or vice versa, in the end, Qing Gang would be the one swallowed up. Therefore, Lu Ding Tian instructed his two sons not to join either Nan Hongmen or North Hongmen but to develop in another way.
In truth, I had never understood Lu Ding Tian's real intentions before, but now I saw clearly that he had always planned for Lu Fei to succeed him, which is why he allowed Lu Fei to choose what he deemed more suitable with Nan Hongmen.
And now?
There was no need to mention Lu Ding Tian's thoughts on heirs; he kept a tight grip on me while allowing Lu Xian to develop freely. He didn't let me build my own power but wanted all my focus on stability, clearly not wanting me to become enemies with Lu Xian.
This was just Lu Ding Tian's perspective on heirs. Putting aside Lu Fei for now, it was evident that he favored Nan Hongmen while hoping that his successor, Lu Xian, would align with North Hongmen.
Lu Ding Tian's words hinted at restricting my development with Nan Hongmen while subtly threatening me to be cautious. What was he thinking now? Did he want to support North Hongmen? Or did he have other plans?
I still didn't know.
"Brother Two, I'm sorry; I can't help you with this matter. I have something else to attend to and can't entertain you any longer." I stood up with a smile. I genuinely had something important—an appointment with Xiang Nanyuan. He had just called to inform me that he had captured Han Chuan and wanted to meet with me in Kyoto.
"What the hell are you going to do? Hey! What are you going to do?" Lu Xian shouted after me, but I ignored him and left without looking back; he didn't follow.
Xiang Nanyuan coming to Kyoto was quite a bold move since Kyoto was Qing Gang's territory but also had many people from North Hongmen, such as Du Tao, the head of Tian Ye Group.
The place where we were supposed to meet was a small bar. Upon entering, I noticed that the bar was doing quite well. Looking around, I realized that most of the patrons were not ordinary people.
As I scrutinized the scene closely, I discovered that at least half of them were skilled fighters—including women! They wore either skirts or tight pants that accentuated their calves' shape. Their calves were neither thick nor slender but belonged to a type known for explosive strength.
It wasn't unusual for one or two people like this; however, seeing so many in one place indicated they were all part of Xiang Nanyuan's security team!
Of course, that's not the key issue. It's strange for someone like Xiang Nanyuan to go out without a pair of bodyguards; he must have them for protection, surveillance, and investigating various individuals.
I had arranged to meet Xiang Nanyuan in a private room at a bar. These small, dimly lit rooms were familiar to me; I had often come here with my former partners. Meeting a man here today made me feel uneasy, so I walked straight into the room without knocking.
"You're here, take a seat," Xiang Nanyuan said with a casual smile, his usual arrogance noticeably diminished.
"What do you need from me?" I asked, observing that something about Xiang Nanyuan seemed off today. Shouldn't he be wearing that overconfident expression? Instead, he appeared much more approachable.
"This is Han Chuan's address," he said, handing me a piece of paper. "All you need to do is give this address to Qing Gang, and you'll have accomplished something significant in front of Lu Ding Tian."
I opened the paper and was surprised to find it listed a location in North District of Kyoto! It wasn't surprising that Xiang Nanyuan would bring Han Chuan here; this was the territory of Tian Ye Group, and importantly, Du Tao, the head of Tian Ye Group, was affiliated with North Hongmen. It made sense for North Hongmen to hide its people within the influence of Tian Ye Group.
"Have you briefed this person well? I've heard he has no ties to anyone and only values his own life," I asked with a smile. I was familiar with Han Chuan's background; he was self-serving and difficult to control. If I wanted him to say something, I could easily manipulate him without needing Xiang Nanyuan's help.
"Are you joking? Our Hongmen has been around for so many years; getting someone to listen is not a difficult task," Xiang Nanyuan replied with a grin. I realized he was right; I had confidence that Nan Hongmen would have ways to ensure Han Chuan complied, which is why I had delegated this task to Xiang Nanyuan.
Now that he had taken care of it, how could I not trust him? That would be unreasonable since we were in the same boat now. Once this matter was settled, Xiang Nanyuan would benefit even more than I would!
"Alright then, wait for good news," I said as I took Han Chuan's address. Just as I stood up, I caught a familiar scent in the air.
Sandalwood!
It smelled just like Lu Xian!
How could there be sandalwood in this room? Such an exquisite fragrance shouldn't be found in a small bar's private room.
"Why not?" Xiang Nanyuan asked with a smile.
"My legs are getting numb from sitting," I replied as I shifted my position and bent down slightly, bringing my nose closer to Xiang Nanyuan. To my surprise, he carried the same scent as Lu Xian!
It was just an address after all. Why did Xiang Nanyuan come all the way to Kyoto just to give it to me?
Initially, I thought Xiang Nanyuan had brought Han Chuan here just to conveniently meet with me. Now it seemed that wasn't the case; the person he truly wanted to meet was Lu Xian!
And Lu Xian didn't come to Kyoto merely to question me. Perhaps he also intended to have a chat with Nan Hongmen's Xiang Nanyuan. Maybe his visit was just a cover for their secret meeting since Lu Xian typically operated within Qing Gang's territory—an area where Xiang Nanyuan couldn't go.
I said nothing and pretended not to notice as I turned and exited the private room. Everything was different from what I'd imagined; in fact, it felt like everything I'd seen was an illusion crafted by others for me to see.
Lu Ding Tian, Lu Xian, and Xiang Nanyuan!
The three of them have other tricks up their sleeves! Lu Ding Tian has always leaned towards Nan Hongmen. He surely intended for Lu Fei, who is aligned with Nan Hongmen, to take over his position. With Lu Fei dead, he wants Lu Xian, who is aligned with North Hongmen, to take his place.
This is where the problem arises: Lu Xian is not from Nan Hongmen; he belongs to North Hongmen! Lu Ding Tian rejects North Hongmen!
So what can be done? Either Lu Ding Tian changes his mind, abandoning his closer ties to Nan Hongmen in favor of North Hongmen, or he gives up on Lu Xian and allows me to take the position. Another option would be to transform Lu Xian into a person of Nan Hongmen!
Lu Ding Tian has already made his choice! He has sided with Nan Hongmen! He chose his second son, Lu Xian! And I am destined to become a tragic sacrifice.
It’s simple: once I am dead, Lu Xian will become Lu Ding Tian's only son. On the surface, it will appear that Lu Xian is from North Hongmen, and after my death, the people of North Hongmen will surely be overjoyed. They might even abandon their plans for Lu Ding Tian's demise within three months because by then, Lu Ding Tian will have no choice but to let Lu Xian succeed him.
North Hongmen would then lower their guard and might even collaborate with Qing Gang to devise an immediate attack strategy against Nan Hongmen.
Here’s the crux: what if Lu Xian is actually a person of Nan Hongmen? If Qing Gang is close to North Hongmen, then everything about North Hongmen would be transparent to Nan Hongmen. Qing Gang would be like an invisible dagger poised at the head of North Hongmen!
They could strike before anyone even realizes what’s happening! What an achievement that would be! This would elevate Lu Xian!
Is this their scheme? If so, then Han Chuan Gen won’t reveal that it was Lu Xian who instructed him to kill Lu Fei; instead, he will implicate me as the one who ordered the assassination of Lu Fei!
They have already decided to send me to the guillotine! I am merely a stepping stone on their path to success.
