"Senior, could you add some money to stay in the cabin halfway up the mountain? The view from the cabin at the foot of the mountain isn't great," Zhou Xuemei said, glancing up towards the halfway point with a hint of expectation in her eyes. The wooden cabins were faintly visible, surrounded by lush trees, offering a wide view of distant mountains and seas of clouds, which was indeed much better than the scenery at the foot of the mountain.
"Since it's your own money, there's no problem at all. I've already booked two cabins halfway up the mountain. I'll take one, and you can share the other with Jingzhu. Consider it my treat; you won't have to pay anything," Mark replied with a smile, his tone laced with a hint of pride. He had planned this all along, and Zhou Xuemei's request provided the perfect opportunity for him to showcase his generosity.
"Um, I don't think that's appropriate. I really think staying in the cabin at the foot of the mountain is just fine. Zhou Xuemei, I won't go," Lin Jingzhu said awkwardly, a hint of embarrassment on her face. She didn't want to owe Mark any favors, especially not one that seemed to carry ulterior motives. She was well aware that Mark had a special fondness for her, but she didn't want to put herself in an awkward position because of it.
"Come on, Jingzhu, it's a kind offer from Senior. The view halfway up is much better than down here; at the foot of the mountain, all you can see are bushes—it's not interesting at all," Zhou Xuemei urged, her tone slightly impatient. She didn't care about Mark's intentions; she simply wanted to enjoy better accommodations. For her, spending a few thousand dollars on lodging was nothing compared to having a comfortable stay.
"What about Jiang Chen?" Lin Jingzhu hesitated for a moment before shifting the topic back to Jiang Chen. She didn't want to get too entangled with Mark, especially not in such an intimate setting. She knew that while her relationship with Jiang Chen wasn't clearly defined yet, her feelings for him were evident.
"You and Zhou Xuemei can stay in the cabin halfway up the mountain; that leaves one cabin at the foot empty for them," Mark casually suggested, his tone indifferent. He seemed unconcerned about Jiang Chen and Ding Yan's relationship, merely mentioning it as if it were inconsequential.
"Senior, that's not appropriate—there are boundaries between men and women," Lin Jingzhu said anxiously, her face showing unease. She didn't want to see Jiang Chen sharing a room with Ding Yan, especially given how ambiguous that arrangement seemed. She understood that Jiang Chen and Ding Yan's relationship wasn't as close as Mark implied, but she couldn't help but worry.
"If they're traveling together, it suggests their relationship is more than ordinary; they probably share a room regularly," Mark chuckled, teasingly. He seemed oblivious to Lin Jingzhu's feelings and continued speaking as if it were merely a joke.
"Jiang Chen isn't like that! Senior, please don't say such things," Lin Jingzhu replied angrily, her tone tinged with dissatisfaction. Her understanding of Jiang Chen made it hard for her to accept Mark's insinuations, especially those that felt malicious.
"Jingzhu, since your senior is being so kind, just stay in the cabin halfway up the mountain. I'll book two more cabins there later," Jiang Chen suddenly interjected calmly and firmly. He had long seen through Mark's intentions but chose not to engage with him over it. He knew Mark had feelings for Lin Jingzhu but didn't want to put her in an uncomfortable situation because of it.
