The Puppet

Lu Jin had been having an incredibly bad few days. First, he lost the competition for the position of General Manager to a colleague; then came the devastating news of his mother's critical illness; and now… Fang Xia, the woman he despised with every fiber of his being! 0

He should have found a way to deal with her long ago. If it weren't for her dramatic scene at the board meeting, where she cried and claimed he had deceived her emotionally, the board members wouldn't have all voted against him. 0

With the network of relationships he had built using money, the position of General Manager, which should have been his for the taking, would not have slipped through his fingers. 0

“Fang Xia, I’ve told you before, you are nothing but a puppet in my hands. Never think about resisting; otherwise, you will pay the price.” 0

Lu Jin coldly stared at the wine glass on the table, his tone chilling. “The more exquisite and beautiful something is, the more fragile it becomes.” 0

He glanced sideways at a newspaper next to him. The date was three days old, and there was a prominent headline that read, “Female College Student Commits Suicide Due to Social Pressure,” accompanied by a photo and detailed report. 0

Lu Jin focused on the beautiful, youthful face of the college student in the photo. He raised his glass and softly said, “Cheers, Fang Xia.” 0

The vibrant waltz music played in his ears, but beside him was no longer the graceful partner he once had. A sense of emptiness filled Lu Jin's heart. He walked out onto the balcony and took a few deep breaths of fresh air, trying to let go of his recent troubles. 0

The cool night breeze filled Lu Jin's throat with a different kind of sensation. Yet his chest felt heavy; having lost this golden opportunity, could he still find his footing in this strange and complicated city? Lu Jin shook his head. Even he, usually so confident, felt a bit lost at that moment. 0

In the distance, a strange pale object floated towards him, drifting closer and closer. 0

Lu Jin paused for a moment, puzzled: What was that? 0

As it approached within reach, Lu Jin leaned against the balcony railing and stretched out his hand to grasp it. The texture was eerily white and smooth like a young girl’s skin. As he focused on it, he couldn't help but exclaim, “Is this… Fang Xia's scarf?” 0

Lu Jin clearly remembered the scarf; it was a gift he had given to Fang Xia on Valentine's Day. The back of the scarf had their names written in small red letters, along with a heart symbol. There was no way he could mistake it. 0

But how could this scarf, now a relic of the deceased, end up outside his balcony on the 18th floor? 0

For the first time in his life, fear surged within Lu Jin. A chill swept over him, freezing him to the core. He felt an eerie sensation, as if a pair of cold eyes were watching him from the shadows. 0

Slowly, he lowered his head. To his horror, a woman's head with long flowing hair was floating in the air. Her black hair moved like dark tendrils, and on her pale face was an unsettling smile directed at Lu Jin. 0

A deep and sinister voice emanated from the head: "I know your secret." 0

Then came a chilling laugh. Lu Jin found himself paralyzed, unable to move as the woman's head drew closer, her icy presence enveloping him. Desperation clawed at him as he screamed, "No, Fang Xia! Please, I beg you, spare me!" 0

With a loud crash, a wine glass shattered on the floor, red liquid spilling everywhere. Lu Jin struggled awake from the nightmare, clutching his chest in panic as he scanned his surroundings for anything unusual. 0

The waltz continued to play softly in the background; it turned out he had unknowingly fallen asleep and dreamt this horrifying scene. 0

Lu Jin managed a weary smile and wiped the cold sweat from his forehead when suddenly, his hand froze mid-motion. 0

His expression turned to one of shock as he slowly lowered his hand. In his right hand, he was gripping a white scarf tightly. 0

He sprang up abruptly and threw the white scarf onto the floor, utterly bewildered. He muttered to himself in disbelief, "Impossible. How could this be?" 0

"I know your secret." The low, slow voice echoed again. Lu Jin turned around in shock; there was no one else in the apartment besides him. Who could possibly be speaking to him? 0

"I am a thorn in your heart. You cannot remove me, and I will always be by your side..." 0
