On the rooftop on the other side, the last rays of the setting sun illuminated a disheveled figure. Long hair was swept by the wind, revealing a face streaked with tears yet devoid of expression.
"Miss, if you have any troubles, you can talk to us," two police officers attempted to approach her slowly.
"Wei He, we have already notified your parents. They will be here soon!" Several doctors and nurses also tried to soothe her feelings.
When Yan Kongyue rushed over, a heavy aura of death hit her like a wave. She understood clearly that the girl truly harbored thoughts of ending her life.
"Wei He, your condition isn’t as serious as you think. Just maintain a positive mindset," one doctor urged anxiously, wanting to step forward to persuade the girl.
Standing at the edge of the rooftop, Wei He stared blankly ahead, as if she were the only person in the world. Slowly raising her hands and tilting her head back with closed eyes, it was unclear whether she sought to embrace death or was simply savoring the last moments of life.
"Is she sick?" Yan Kongyue whispered to a nearby nurse.
"Yes, Depression," came the reply.
At that moment, Lin Zhuo, Lin Feng, and Lin Lie also arrived. They had left with Yan Kongyue but she had reached there first. Lin Feng, who trained daily in the military, felt a pang of guilt for falling behind and wondered if he hadn’t trained hard enough. Yet Lin Zhuo knew he could never compare himself to Yan Kongyue.
Wei He’s long hair danced in the wind but was also tangled by the constraints of life.
"What a beautiful name—Wei He," Yan Kongyue took a few steps forward.
The two police officers gestured for her to step back, but Yan Kongyue pressed her hand down towards them. Lin Zhuo promptly pulled out his police badge to indicate they were on the same side.
Seeing the officers nod, Yan Kongyue moved forward again.
"What’s the view like over there?" Her voice seemed to possess a magical power that gently stirred something within Wei He’s heart.
A flicker of pain crossed Wei He’s otherwise expressionless face; she hadn’t paid attention to her surroundings in a long time.
In truth, everyone experiences unhappiness at times, but death does not solve any problems.
As Yan Kongyue spoke, onlookers were taken aback; in an instant, she had sat down beside Wei He with her legs dangling over the edge of the rooftop.
Wei He looked at the suddenly appearing girl in surprise. When had she come over? How could she sit so leisurely at the edge of a rooftop on the thirty-something floor?
Meanwhile, those behind them gasped in shock; Yan Kongyue's movements were too swift for anyone to comprehend how she had gotten there. Even Lin Lie and Lin Zhuo didn’t see it clearly. But when they finally realized where Yan Kongyue was sitting, they clenched their fists nervously and quietly moved closer behind her, afraid of startling them.
"Well, this view isn’t bad!" Yan Kongyue patted the spot next to her, inviting Wei He to sit down.
"If you’re unhappy here, then let’s find another place to live! There will always be somewhere that makes you feel comfortable."
"Really?" Wei He looked at Yan Kongyue with confusion, slowly lowering her outstretched arms.
"Of course, you have the right to choose. If you're suffering so much here, why continue? Death seems like the best option!"
"No, no, no, you're wrong. Those who commit suicide are punished in Difu! Once you die by your own hand, the real suffering is just beginning."
"How do you know?"
"This is not what you want. You need to live; only by living can you have more possibilities!"
"But my mom said that if living is painful, then just die!"
Yan Kongyue frowned slightly. "Is that really your mother speaking?"
"You don't have to listen to everyone. To live means you should be a bit selfish; your happiness is what matters most."
"Be a bit selfish?" Wei He was taken aback. Everyone—parents, relatives, friends, teachers—had always told her to be open-minded and understanding. This was the first time someone had told her to be a little selfish.
"Exactly! The world is so beautiful. How old are you? There are countless sights you've never seen, delicious foods you've never tasted, and fun experiences you've never had. Aren't you curious about those?" Yan Kongyue's eyes gazed into the distance, a smile playing on her lips as if she were envisioning a beautiful future.
"Can I really?" Wei He's eyes gradually sparkled with a hint of hope as she looked at the girl beside her.
