The train compartment on the Middle East Railway was quite comfortable. Although the decor seemed rather vintage in Ze Anzhi's eyes, the overall setup was quite upscale. For instance, there was a fully wooden decorated bathroom in the compartment, complete with a shower, which made Ze Anzhi's five-day journey feel utterly fatigue-free.
He opened the letter just as he was leaving Beiping. After only a few seconds of reading, he nearly tore the envelope apart. He could sense Mao Renping's deep malice through the words, and he silently vowed that the next time he met Mao Renping, he would give him an unforgettable lesson.
The first page of the letter contained instructions: mission, infiltration, location—Ha, Dao Wai Ande Street Five Ping Restaurant—cover identity, restaurant worker, code name Wild Boar, real name Li Ping'an.
At this point, he had crumpled the paper in his hand but managed to hold back his anger long enough to finish reading. His superior was Wu Yong, the Station Master at Ha Station, whose cover identity was Deputy Director of a certain district's Police Station. Upon arriving at Ha, he was to stay at Wuping Restaurant on Ande Street and wait for the Station Master to make contact.
His group was codenamed Maple Leaf, and as Wild Boar, he was an operative tasked with carrying out orders from either the Station Master or his team leader. What kind of tasks? Kidnapping? Assassination? What else could agents be responsible for?
As soon as he finished reading the letter, Ze Anzhi tore it and the envelope into shreds and tossed them into the washbasin in the bathroom before striking a match and throwing it in. No wonder Mao Renping had wanted him to wait until now to open the envelope; if he had opened it earlier, Mao Renping would probably have been dealt with by now.
Having accepted the mission, Ze Anzhi resolved to see it through! Not for any other reason but because this could lead to a significant opportunity—a chance to rewrite his family history!
In this world before his transmigration, any man from Huaxia would jump at such an opportunity! Now that Ze Anzhi had crossed over, he was determined to seize this chance!
However, when he arrived at the designated cover identity location dressed in a black wool coat and a top-quality tailored suit amidst the wind and snow, seeing the dark sign that read Wuping Restaurant along with the dilapidated building that looked ready to collapse and piles of coal debris outside made him feel an overwhelming urge to turn back.
After taking a moment to compose himself, he adjusted his hat and stepped inside. As soon as he lifted the curtain and entered, a mix of foot odor, alcohol stench, sweat, and various indescribable smells assaulted his nostrils, forcing him to remove his gloves and cover his mouth and nose.
A young man dressed as a worker approached him. Seeing this guest in luxurious attire—a suit that one would never see in this area of simple houses—left him at a loss for words. This neighborhood housed working-class families from textile mills, coal washing plants, and steel factories; they all lived tough lives. Suddenly encountering someone like this left the young worker unsure how to respond.
"May I help you?"
"I'm looking for your boss!"
The worker snapped back to reality; thankfully, this guest wasn’t here to eat—otherwise, they wouldn’t even know how to order.
"Boss! Someone’s looking for you!"
The kitchen curtain was lifted, revealing a short, stout man dressed as a Fat Cook, holding a large ladle and peeking out. "Who’s looking for me?"
"I am! Do you have any wild game in your shop? I want to buy a wild boar!"
As Ze Anzhi uttered the secret code, he felt another jab from Mao Renping in his heart.
"You old rascal, you're always trying to trick me!"
The boss squinted his eyes, quickly realizing the situation. "Ah! A big deal! Come in, come in, please!"
He ushered Ze Anzhi into the not-so-large kitchen, where the chef quietly whispered the secret code. "All crows are black in this world."
"Only my family has a white one."
"Last year someone fell into a latrine."
"Pulling him out was my job."
"Brother, you’ve finally come! Wild Boar Brothers!"
Ze Anzhi rolled his eyes as he exchanged the secret code with the chef, then reluctantly shook hands with him—gloves still on.
