Lifting the bowl of rice, he picked up his chopsticks and took a bite of the mushrooms. Mmm, the taste was quite good—really good!
In no time, the table was cleared of dishes, as the others also realized just how delicious the food was. No one drank alcohol, for according to the Gendarmerie regulations, one rule explicitly prohibited drinking! As proper soldiers, none of the young officers or nobles had touched a drop.
"Takaishi, tell us about the situation with the Arima Family."
"Your Excellency, the Arima Family has submitted their loyalty pledge to the head of the family, confirming their status as vassals. The head has agreed and allowed the Arima Family to pledge allegiance to you."
"Indeed, my mother has a keen eye. Today’s display by Jin Er shows that the education from the Arima Family is effective! Jin Er! I accept your service!"
Arima Jin II was extremely excited. He quickly pulled out a large piece of white cloth from his pocket, spread it on the ground, knelt down, removed his Japanese sword and hat, adjusted his attire, and placed a brocade pouch in front of him. Then he bowed deeply. "My Lord, please accept this bow from your subject!"
With that bow, Arima Jin II raised the brocade pouch in his hands and presented it before Kujou Yuuma. This was a very standard samurai ritual of loyalty recognition. Although it had fallen out of practice in modern armies, it remained quite common among the Kazoku.
"Arima Jin II, I bestow upon you the crest of the Takaishi Family and permit you to act in the name of Takaishi Family!"
"Thank you, My Lord!"
"Rise."
Takaishi and One were already accustomed to such matters. The elders of the entire Royal Guard Regiment were all vassals of Kujou Yuuma; such loyalty recognition ceremonies could be witnessed several times in one night during training sessions for new recruits in Tokyo.
The vast majority of Kazoku had already chosen their sides, aligning themselves with Kujou Yuuma and representing Imperial Authority.
After the ceremony concluded, an excited Jin Er, whose face was flushed with joy, was arranged by Kujou to sit down.
"Jin Er, can you manage the Lushun Gendarmerie?"
"Only about half!"
"Why? You are a Major; why can't you control them?"
"A significant portion of the Gendarmerie comes from the Kwantung Army; it is a consequence of my predecessor's reckless acceptance of disreputable soldiers!"
"If I give you one night’s time, can you present me with a disciplined Gendarmerie squad that is free from any misconduct?"
"My Lord, please trust in Arima Jin II's loyalty. By sunrise tomorrow, the Lushun Gendarmerie squad will be clean!"
"Good! Takaishi, One, help Arima!"
"Yes! I look forward to good news tomorrow morning!"
The three of them immediately stood up and respectfully bowed slightly to Kujou. "Please wait for our victorious news, Your Excellency. We will prepare right away and won't disturb your rest."
After saying this, the three exited the room that served as a restaurant, while Kujou settled back into the room where he had been dozing off.
Having been a member of the Gendarmerie for over a year, Kujou was quite accustomed to the routine. Once he was done with his tasks, he turned off the lights and went to sleep.
Not long after he lay down, a slightly cool object slipped into his blankets.
Kujou, who had already begun dreaming, didn’t register what was happening at first; he was lost in a dream filled with memories of past lectures from certain teachers. However, this dream felt incredibly vivid—so real that it resonated with sounds.
