Except for the collar, which lacked the white lightning bolt, the sleeves bore the elegantly crafted word "Gendarmerie." The military cap was a black wide-brimmed hat consistent with Germany, made of black wool, adorned with white piping along the brim and walls, combining beauty with high cost. This high expense resulted in a striking appearance, enhancing even the less impressive-looking Oni soldiers' imposing presence.
The helmet was entirely different from any active-duty helmets of other nations, offering superior protection and aesthetics. The weapon in hand had also changed; it was no longer the standard Arisaka rifle of the Imperial Army but had been replaced with a German model.
The officers were equipped with a new pistol personally designed by the Prince, officially named the New Model Pistol (in reality, a Walter). The laces on their boots had been replaced with leather boots, and even gloves were issued. The original packing straps used for bedding had transformed into black military bags.
As soon as they completed their re-equipment, they became the envy of the Kwantung Army; they looked incredibly sharp! Three weeks after the Major General incident in Manchuria, Prince Yuhito returned to the homeland by ship from Korea with his newly outfitted Royal Guard.
From the moment they disembarked at Yokosuka Naval Base, they became a spectacle. Their uniform height was unified at centimeters that represented tall stature in contemporary Japan. Dressed in sleek black military attire, their boots echoed with each step, far more attractive than the Arisaka rifles. The unique chrysanthemum emblem on their hats symbolized that this formidable army was indeed the Royal Guard!
Kujou brought this elite Royal Guard back to ensure their placement beside the Emperor, replacing the Imperial Guard Corps and sending them to Manchuria for reorganization. Even the military attachés would be replaced and sent to Manchuria for standard training before returning to serve the royal family.
Thus, His Majesty the Emperor would possess a Royal Guard Corps comprising three full armies, completely independent of Military Headquarters! With Manchuria's robust military production capabilities backing them, this Royal Guard Corps would possess combat power far exceeding any Type A Division from Military Headquarters.
This arrangement was a result of discussions between Kujou and the Emperor. Once they secured production capabilities that surpassed those of the homeland in Manchuria, the Emperor's desire for military control began to amplify. The brazen maneuvers of these two relatives left Military Headquarters utterly powerless to intervene; they couldn't even voice an objection.
For both the Emperor and Prince Yuhito, everything regarding recruitment, training, armament, and even provisions for the Royal Guard did not consume resources from Military Headquarters nor cost a single yen from the Ministry of Internal Affairs; it was all maintained as private property of the royal family. In simple terms, it was Prince Yuhito's wealth that sustained His Majesty's army.
Upon arriving at the Imperial Palace, this Royal Guard immediately took over the duties of protecting the Imperial Guard Corps. Thanks to prior orders from the Emperor, the transition went smoothly. The outgoing Imperial Guard Corps and military attachés were envious; their morale and weaponry were vastly inferior. They knew that soon they would head to Manchuria for training and would eventually become part of what they currently admired—the Royal Guard!
Kujou's purpose in returning to Tokyo with his troops was to completely eliminate any chance for Military Headquarters to instigate another February 26 incident. The incoming Royal Guard Corps would take full control of all security, guard duties, and defense operations in Tokyo while ensuring that all equipment would be updated in sync with Manchuria's Imperial Guards.
The royal family will be protected by the strongest military force, the Royal Guard. The Imperial Army has no chance of staging another coup like the February 26 Incident! Within the Tokyo area, no military presence of any kind is allowed!
