In the evening, John watched as the two men cleaned the cookware, feeling the joy of leadership.
“Make sure to wipe it well; we can't have any water stains, or it'll rust easily. These kitchen tools are worth a lot,” he said.
Johnny scrubbed vigorously while replying, “Don’t worry! Joseph and I will make sure these utensils are spotless. After this, we’ll fetch you a bucket of hot water so you can wash your feet.”
Hearing this made John smile involuntarily. “Alright, keep up the good work. Being with me is definitely better than being with the Big Head Soldier; at least here, you’re safe.”
As he watched Johnny and Joseph fall asleep, John quietly got up and began practicing the Universal Qi Training Method. However, this year was particularly chaotic; it was rumored that many territories along the southern border had been invaded, with numerous Lords meeting fates similar to that of his own Noble Lord—being torn apart.
Consequently, the Governor of Blink County, Marquis Duvas, summoned all subordinate Lords to send troops to support the front lines. For nobles like James White, the deaths of commoners meant little; what mattered most were those noble territories that had been annihilated by orcs. If their dispatched men achieved merit on the battlefield, perhaps a new Baron would emerge from their families, expanding their lands—how wonderful that would be!
Thus, any noble with some wealth would send family members along with a few troops to support the front lines. Even those who didn’t want to get involved in this mess or thought they wouldn’t gain anything still had to appease their superiors by sending a token force of one or two hundred men.
In the following days, as the team began to gel together, their march finally took on a more organized pace, covering forty to fifty miles a day towards the front lines. However, wherever they went sparked numerous disputes; in a group of fewer than five hundred men, passing through any noble territory would inevitably lead to some conflict.
With all due respect, Redman is not the kind of playboy John imagined. After some investigation, it became clear that someone who could advance to Transcendent at the age of twenty-five or twenty-six is undoubtedly an elite among the nobility. However, just the firewood needed for five hundred people on the journey was enough to give Redman a headache.
It’s important to understand that this world resembles the Western world of John’s past. Everything within a lord's territory belongs to that lord—the trees in the territory, the fish in its waters. To put it simply, one of the most notorious possessions of a lord is known as the Right of the First Night, which illustrates just how troublesome disputes can be along this journey.
Fortunately, these matters were not John's concern. He was merely a chef, unlike leaders in his previous life who could shift all blame onto lower-level employees.
